Review Roux - Rochester

Richard W
“Simple” food done really well, but not worth putting up with the poor service (curt and neglectful). The onion soup was among the best I’ve tried. The vegetables are treated with respect, lifted up to be the stars instead of being relegated to a side dish.

Great food and great experience! Service was awesome, the ambiance was on-point and the food/cocktails matched. Although unexpected, the burgers were some of the best in the area. Steak, chicken, and desserts were amazing. Highly recommend for a great experience, and subtle French vibe.

We liked the atmosphere and, before it got busy, the service. Got a little slow when it was busy and took a little bit to get the last item and check. But! Very lovely and delicious.

What a lovely brunch! We had a cocktail and a specialty coffee drink, both of which were perfect. We had the Camambert as an appetizer. I’d expected plain melted Camambert with some accoutrements, but the Camambert was soft with an amazing jellied fig spread with an excellent balance of fresh herbs that cut perfectly through the sweetness. For the main course we had the croque madam and the Waffle Sammy. Once again the flavors were perfectly balanced, with just the right amount of richness, acid, and flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The seating was a bit tight, yet it felt more cozy than constricting. The servers were very attentive and kind. Can’t wait to come back for dinner!

Somehow I’ve managed to never visit Roux before- I realized tonight that’s been a tremendous loss. Briefly- this place is excellent on all fronts and certainly worth a visit! Service was efficient, kind, and very helpful- I really like when the staff can provide their own personal recommendations. The cocktails were unique and quite delicious. Although not the best espresso martini I have ever had (that goes to Fin Point, in Boston, MA), this is the best I have had in Rochester. The Frenchie— let’s just say, this was enough of a reason to visit again. Appetizers were excellent- the muscles, again, are the best I’ve had outside of New England. The ricotta toast was perfect and the duck was beautiful with a nice citrus flavor. Everything we ordered was perfection— from portion size, preparation, flavoring, and textures. This will surely be a place I plan to visit very soon. I can’t get over a place like this is in my own backyard! Prices are extremely reasonable— and the ambiance is relaxed, understated, sophistication. This is an excellent place for a group or a special night out-

Duck was very good. Mussels were yummy. The garlic and ricotta toast was a very nice start. If you like burbon and coffee, you have to try the cafe social!

Really good food, nice ambience and cool cocktail drinks!

Lovely little bistro, great ambience, our brunch service was very good. Food was quite nice but a few issues: the "waffle sammie" is not a sammie, must be eaten with knife and fork - but very tasty. The "hash" was not prepared as a classic hash but was very good vegetable preparation. As long as you're flexible, it's fine, a great option for Rochester.

Great French bistro food. Space can get cramped and loud, but not unexpected for the size of the place and the French vibe. Not sure if they were short or not, but our server seemed a little rushed and frazzled (Saturday night rush.) Food was great no complaints

I just went for the first time last Friday and I can say I did not leave disappointed. I ordered the escargot, lobster roll and soften the blow (drink) and everything was amazing! I personally wished I’ve chosen another drink because it was my first time trying anything with absinthe (sweet medicine type taste) but it did the job. My friend ordered the mussels, swordfish and a rosé. She said the rosé was extremely acidic which is why she didn’t finish her glass but that was her only complaint. Other than our drink choices everything else was (like I said earlier) amazing! Lovely atmosphere, savory foods, and great customer service. I will definitely be back.

We made a meal of the apps & my faves were the beets! Seasonal in the fall so get them while you can! Dressed atop a luscious spread of fluffy cheese & topped with a toasted, nutty granola-like crunchy topping. Perfect bites that hit all the sweet, savory, crunchy, rich, smooth & healthy notes! YUMMMM!

Its a little cozy but well worth it for the cocktails, natural wine and delicious menu. We ordered the mussles, frites, parisian gnocci and the chicken cutlet. Our server, Shae, took excellent care of us. We will be back!

We visited Roux directly after landing in Rochester, having found it through a quick Google search for restaurants. Roux’s quaint, quietly sophisticated interior (with the option of outside dining) felt welcoming. Our server, Abigail, thoroughly knew the menu and directed us to cocktails and entrees that suited us well. Our drinks - In the flowers (vodka with fruit and floral aromatics) and Kentucky Buck (bourbon with a little fizz from ginger beer) - were refreshing. We shared an arugula salad which lived up to its description of parmesan richness. The two entrees were well seasoned. The Duck leg confit’s plum sauce was delicious and the duck fat fried potatoes had a crisp crust and creamy interior; the Crispy Pork’s herb sauce balanced the meatiness of the pork. We enjoyed Roux. Our server, Abigail, made the dining experience wonderful!

A cute little café with impressively delicious french food! The gorgeous atmosphere is sophisticated, but not stuffy. The waitress was very kind and helpful. The food is definitely pricey, but certainly worth it if you're willing to spend a little extra. Both our latte and americano we're great and the egg on top of my croque madame was one of the most perfectly cooked eggs I've ever had. Although, we didn't order any cocktails ourselves the bartender seemed knowledgeable and their absinthe collection impressively stocked

Charming French bistro with outdoor seating along Park Ave in the Summer. Very affordable wine selection (we ordered a carafe for $20) and delicious selection of food! We came on a Wednesday evening and enjoyed the $2 Barnstable oysters and bowl of steamed muscles in a white wine/cream base with fresh baguettes. Ended the meal with an amazing creme brulee and strong espresso. Amazing service, incredible meal, and relaxed atmosphere!

Very well done steak! Asked for medium rare and got just what we needed, a perfect amount of pink and blood. Spent some time to find a parking on a Memorial Day. We booked a table in advance and I advise to do so. We were incredibly indecisive about the menu and as soon as we ordered two steaks, my daughter saw “today’s specials” board and asked to change her order to chicken, however it was not possible for which the chef kindly gave us some sort of incredibly well done stew as an apology. I would not advise to order a dessert since the variety isn’t that big and they are pricy. Overall, great kitchen, will definitely come back for steak.

Went for brunch, on a Sunday, and it was a very pleasant experience. This was my second time there, last time having been on a Saturday. It was much busier than the first time, so the wait time was a little longer, but still very reasonable given the amount of people that were there. I got the shakshouka, and my girlfriend got the smoked salmon plate, which was what I had last time. Both were very good. The smoked salmon platter stands out to me, between the creme fraiche, pickled pearl onions, fresh herbs, and caper berries, it's something I would suggest trying. It was a little too hot out to fully enjoy the shakshouka, but that was my fault. Cocktails were great as well. Complex enough to enjoy but not so complex that they seemed contrived or pretentious. Our server Tessa was attentive and personable, and had us leaving with a smile. Overall, it's a bit on the pricey side, but if you want a chill environment with well seasoned, flavorful food, and tasty cocktails, I'd definitely recommend checking out Roux.

My wife and I celebrated our 22nd Anniversary here. From Chicago, we were in town moving our daughter in to UR for her sophomore year. Food, service, drinks, ambience, vibe, temperature, noise level, lighting, everything was excellent! Perfect! Could not ask for a better evening. Highly recommend!

What a lovely, cozy, delicious Gem! Roux was simply amazing. Making reservations online was easy, we were cheerfully greeted by the host and our group of 4 was sat in a cozy corner window seat. The benches, adorned with cushy pillows, were roomy and comfortable! Our waitress was attentive and friendly! The drinks are artfully crafted and DELICIOUS! Our waitress recommended the frenchie and the moonpie - alongside our mimosas! Both were well balanced and amazing! We ordered the fries with aoli, breakfast sandwiches, the waffle sandwich, smashed potatoes, and the shashouka baked egg with a side of toast! The food was phenomenal and came out fast! We couldn't stop eating the fries! Cannot wait to stop back in for dinner and more drinks!

Wonderful dinner on Friday evening at Roux. Highly recommend the gnoochi. From the atmosphere to our waiter (Ryan); the dinner was fantastic. They never disappoint. Thank you.

Smoked trout app was on point. Duck confit and bouillabaisse had amazing flavor development. Cozy and intimate interior great for conversation.

My family and I had dinner last night. The food was excellent and the drinks and wine list was great. Escargot Bourgogne and oysters was superb. Very good selection of wines by the glass as well. Service was excellent. We will be visiting again soon.

The food and service were amazing. It does not matter what you order, you are going to love it! I would suggest you make a reservation. My wife Zeon Dax and I were very impressed. Our waitress Jennifer was very knowledgeable and very attentive. Will definitely be returning.

I have to say that my daughter and chef at ROUX has created a savory menu using timeless ingredients. Her escargot is to die for! Most importantly her use of the very best ingredients found and the level of care given to each dish speaks for itself. I am very proud of her.

We love this place. We've been for dinner and lunch and we can't wait to go back. It's just the right size--the staff is knowledgeable and friendly, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the food is exquisitely prepared. Roux is the most authentic bistro experience in Upstate New York.

Had my birthday dinner there. Wonderful Roux salad, halibut, rissoto, Brussels Sprouts, fig tart, and superb wine. Exquisite service. Appropriate price. Never had a bad lunch or dinner there. Will go back again and again.
