This Italian restaurant was a delicious hole in the wall. I loved the family style service. I highly recommend the pasta, and the squid salad. I don’t even like tiramisu and it was good. We loved these two bottles of red wine. Treana was my favorite. They take reservations for 6+ and everyone must be there in order to be seated.

2017-11-16 rockfish, pasta with garlic oil, and spaghetti and meatballs were all very good. No reservations for parties less than 8 people, it's best to arrive early, so you can walk in and take a seat/table; one if the other guests told us at the door that on Fridays, there is a really long line to get in the door.

Went to Mamma Zu last Thursday night for a date night. Great little spot. Classic RVA hole in the wall eatery that is often overseen by visitors. I would recommend this spot over many of the other mainstream restaurants in the area. Great food. It is a tight space but make yourself comfortable and enjoy the vibes with friends or your partner. The tiramisu is to die for and a dessert you do not want to miss out on!!!

If you are a foodie you need to go here. You know the negative reviews will not apply to you. You will know what to do, you will not be surprised. Go enjoy. The duck for me is my staple here in a reduced marsala and dimiglas has been the same for over 20 years, cooked to perfection. The polenta is the way it should be, multi textured with a crisp out side, soft center and has an actual flavor. Navy beans cooked to be softened but still hold thier shape with fatback that does not over power the beans. Go, just go.

Come to mamma’Zu for amazing food and the intimate atmosphere. The word is out about this small gem of a restaurant in Richmond’s Oregon Hill neighborhood, and it is frequently overcrowded. Grab a drink at the bar and prepare for a long wait. While the food and drink is excellent, it loses a star in my book for not having a host podium to get on the list for a table. Getting a table feels chaotic and involves flagging down an already busy member of the wait staff to get on the list. There doesn’t really seem to be a designated waiting area, and if the bar is full it’s hard to find a spot to wait inside where you don’t feel in the way. Once you’re seated, though, it’s all smooth sailing. The restaurant’s menu is all written up on a chalkboard behind the bar. In my opinion it’s all good, whatever choice you make you can’t go wrong. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the menu options, the attentive waitstaff is more than happy to make a recommendation. Food quality is excellent and portion sizes are large. The dim, candlelit dining area combined with the crowds gives mama’Zu an intimate atmosphere perfect for a date or a special family occasion.

This is my favorite restaurant in Richmond, despite the fact that the decor is dark, ominous, and worn. I have never had a bad meal here. Also, i would order anything off the menu. I've eaten the calf's liver and i don't like liver! It is a testament to how good they are. Also, the prices are very low given the high quality of the food. Try them for lunch if you want the quality without the wait. Otherwise, you must be patient and your patience will be rewarded.

I very much liked this place. I came here with my sister for a meal and wine. The place was unassuming and dark, which was what we wanted. Not a very fancy place, and it felt very intimate. I had the muscles in red sauce and highly recommend it. Thick pasta with a thin, almost watery sauce that just bearly clings to the noodles. I didn't get a chance to try their dessert but perhaps next time.

Liked the intimate, family-like atmosphere and loved the authentic Italian cuisine, especially the pasta dishes and the red sauce! Food combined with the house red wine in short glasses reminded me of Europe and made this a memorable Italian family restaurant experience in Richmond! Will definitely come again!

Excellent pasta and fantastic cooking. The veal marsala is great. It's hard to get a reservation for a small group, and there will definitely be a wait. The staff is a bit no-nonsense but they take care of you. Definitely one of the better restaurants in the city.
