Said by some to be the best bakery in Portland, if not all of Maine, Two Fat Cats has been pleasing locals with old-world baking techniques ever since opening the doors in 2005, the passion of four friends exemplified in a well-culled daily variety of pies, cookies, whoopies, tarts and cakes. Located at 47 India Street, a fortuitous space near to the water, tourist corridor and most of the city’s best dining spots, Two Fat Cats beckons would-be patrons at a distance with the smells of yeast, flour as well as spices and for those fortunate to stop in and descend the staircase the temptations prove substantial whether the interest is sweet or savory, some items stored behind the counter while others rest in a chilled case or cooling on a wooden bakers rack.

Friendly in terms of service, a sort of co-op feel embraced by staff and patrons who all seem to understand the bakery’s place in the community at large, early arrival is advised for those hoping to snag hand pies, daily slices or individual servings sizes, the seasonality of the menu on this day offering late-season Rhubarb mixed with strawberries in the former while the ‘signature’ black and blue omits any extra sugar or filling in favor of all-natural berries cooked just past bursting inside a flaky all-butter pastry.
Unfortunately faring poorly by way of a cupcake, the light cream topping pleasant while the red velvet base was unfortunately quite dry, better bites were found amidst two styles of Maine-favorite Whoopie Pie, the Chocolate version more-or-less expected with a good cake-to-filling ratio while the combination of Lemon and Blueberries was downright delicious whether presented by way of the sandwich cookie or buttery scone loaded with toothsome rolled oats.

Get the blueberry pie (you're in Maine!) Then get another pie (you're on vacation!) Maybe bourbon pecan. Maybe apple. Or something with chocolate. Everything will be delicious.
Delicious pie with a lovely crust. Husband got the brownie which was fantastic as well. Staff could have been a bit friendlier but at least the food was great!
Best pecan pie I have ever had, this coming from a southerner who grew up making them. Pie crust is impeccable. So so happy its only a few blocks away.
The Two Fat Cats Bakery is located not far from Duck Fat and they have a more limited selection than the Standard Baking Co. But what they do make, they make very well. They generally have cakes, pies, cupcakes and a few other items. But some of the items
Mayneee I still think about this cake from time to time. I ordered this for my Nikkah (Islamic wedding) cake, told them how what I wanted it, brought the flowers in the day before pick up and it was perfect. Like I’m not even exaggerating rn this was the best cake I’ve had in my life (and I’m not even fond of cake like that). Plus, I think they said it would feed around 30 people but we had plenty left over after having a 30+ home wedding. One layer was lemon filling and the other raspberry— I might have to reorder this for an anniversary or two LOL I miss it that much. Thank you guys for making me the nikkah cake I didn’t even know I wanted 😂. Salaam
I heard about Two Fat Cats Bakery through a Portland, ME facebook group. When we arrived to pick up our order, we were glad that they had their own parking lot. They are a bakery that sells sweet and savory pies, cakes, cupcakes, cookies, whoopie pies, breakfast pastries (e.g., scones, muffins, cinnamon buns), egg bakes, local honey, local coffee beans, and tea bags.
My order consisted of 6 chocolate chip cookies, 6 lemon shortbread, two 7" blueberry pies, and a slice of sour cherry pie. Between the two cookies, I liked the lemon shortbread cookies more. I liked how the lemon shortbread were glazed with a lemon icing and decorated with colorful sprinkles. I liked how the fruit filling had notes of sugar, spices, and nuts and how the pie crust was crispy and flaky. The sour cherry pie had a nice lattice pie top.
Love this place! I had never heard if it until I took a management class with a bunch of there staff members. The people they have working for them are amazing hard working individuals. Soon after I stopped by the Portland location and ordered whoopie pies as a amenity for some of my guests and they were fantastic...bravo fat cats 5 stars all the way!
My wedding cake was delicious! My husband and I chose the lemon cake with lemon curd filling and it was so fresh and tasty. I would get a wedding cake here in a heartbeat!
