This place was alright. Ordered the chicken curry. It was good but my stomach was sensitive the next day. Authentic yes. You pay what you eat

Exactly what you expect. This place is exactly what you expect from an authentic Chinese restaurant. They haven't paid attention to the decor of the restaurant since they opened, which must have been some time in the 80's, but the food is good. The service is good, and the food came out fresh, hot, and crispy, the only downside the sauces weren't as flavorful as you'd hope for.

Surprisingly good! Had the curry chicken rice dish and the portion was large and delivered hot and rapidly.

Recommended by the Locals. I stopped a local and was referred here. Beware - the portions are family size so I recommend sharing, unless you love lots of leftovers. I had the salt and pepper squid which was cooked perfect and tasted fresh. My friend had the sweet and sour chicken which was surprisingly crispy with the perfect balance of sweet and tang. I would definitely eat here again if in the area.

Fantastic food, huge portions, cheap!. Don't let the outside fool you - the dusty windows hide a real gem just two blocks from the Lan Su Chinese Gardens.

They have over 20 different options for their $6.50 lunch special, all of which come with:
1. Your choice of entrée - a very generous portion. I had the shrimp in lobster sauce which was excellent.
2. Rice - your choice of fried or steamed
3. The soup of the day - good and spicy hot and sour
4. Eggroll - tasty
5. Two nice slices of barbecue pork
6. A free pot of hot tea
7. House-made, fresh fortune cookies

A huge and delicious meal for lunch and all just $6.50!

The atmosphere is a bit hectic and the dining room is pretty basic, but you can't beat the taste, quality, or price.

The Golden Horse is well-located if you are touring Chinatown, and worth a trip.

Our go to Chinese Restaurant!. We have been going to Golden Horse on and off for the past 8 years . We have tried other places including: Wong King, Jin Wah and Fujin but always return to Golden horse. The food is fresh and delicious. . We have two Asian daughters who frequently request to go there for lunch (which is a bargain). The Hong Kong style noodles are the best. It is the only place we have found in Portland that makes them crispy on the top, soft inside, with the right amount of sauce and veggies. My comparison is a place that makes them back in Quincy Mass. but I don't live there anymore! The green beans are also yummy. I pretty much ate the whole order myself the last time we were three.

I wanted to add a Kudos for the waitstaff. Maybe it's our two beautiful Asian counterparts, or that I from the East Coast "what do you want to orda? Hurry up we're F'n busy in here" but I always find them caring and helpful. Granted we are generous tippers since we both did a lot of menial food service jobs to help put ourselves through college, maybe that helps soften the ice over time...

Fresh. The place may lack ambiance for in restaurant dining, but the food was incredibly fresh and delicious. The portions are very large. I'm picky about hot and sour soup and theirs had that perfect tang. The fried rice with shrimp and pork was the best I think I have ever had. I could not stop eating it :) We ordered far too much, but the price is reasonable and leftover Chinese is always something to look forward to. Probably great for takeout. We saw somebody order a whole fish and there's lots of fish on the menu hence the seafood in the name. Love it will go back!

Authentic Chinese. What? BurgerDogBoy writing about Chinese food? You bet. A secret you don't know - I lived in China for 8 years, loved every moment of it, and even managed to find a burger or two of unknown origin there from time to time, which I shared with my trusty sidekick, Chinese pop superstar Kayoumin.

Portland's largest minority population is Asian, I suspect, so once and awhile you should be able to scrounge up some fairly authentic cuisine, not that Americanized pablum you get at most places.

We regularly go to House of Louie for dim sum, which is fairly authentic, if you know what to ask for, but even then, sometimes you have to order directly, rather than select from the rolling trolleys.

Often when I finish a business lunch at Louie's, I will wander down the block to the Golden Horse Seafood Restaurant (yeah, I have no clue either about the name), and get an order of Peking Duck to take home for Mrs. BurgerDogBoy, and if I am feeling especially generous with myself, some pepper/salt shrimp avec heads, for moi.

Garishly lit, with uneven service, the Golden Horse is my choice for authentic Cantonese (Southern China and Hong Kong) food. It's here you can savor delicacies like geoduck, hot pot, chicken feet, and some pretty authentic Chinese vegetable/arian dishes.

While we usually get Chinese take out from our neighborhood staple, Happy Fortune. His food is ok, and he's a really nice guy who has been around the hood a really long time. And we like to support the locals. He has considerably Americanized the food to suit the local taste. But he'll make ya something special if you ask.

But tonight was a special occasion (it's Sunday) and I pushed Mrs. BDB out the door to hit the Golden Horse, mostly because I like spinning lazy susans til they are out of control, and they bottles of condiments launch across the room. OK, in my fantasy brain, anyway.

It did not disappoint this old China Hand. While most of my favorite Chinese vegetables (yes, I eat vegetables) (OK, but not until this year) are not available in the US, the Horse offers some fairly reasonable facsimiles.
We over-ordered. No surprise there. Mrs. BDB was in the mood for soup, to compliment her previous night's repast of copious amounts of diffused juniper berries. She chose the seafood dumpling noodle soup, which was really excellent.

I went with the spinach and garlic (excellent), crispy tofu (surprise, folks!), and one of their "ceramic pots" - a combination of scallops, shrimp, squid, tofu and a few other assorted vegetables.

The Golden Horse Seafood restaurant is about as close as you can come in Portland to eating in a working man's restaurant in Guangzhou (Canton), complete with the specials board in Chinese, that we 'furriners' don't get to order from, a completely disinterested wait staff, and often, large Chinese families sharing dishes on the lazy susan, and bickering about one issue or another.

It's a definite happy place for me. Takes me back to a far more pleasant (and climatically warmer!) place in my life.

Our go to for Chinese food in the Portland area. Update 11/11/23 - Dined here on Saturday evening around 6pm. It was not busy at all. The dishes ordered- Ma Pao Tofu, cashew nut chicken (gluten free), crispy noodle chicken chow mein, and pot stickers. Large dishes and plenty for take home leftovers. All great as usual.

One of the last standing Chinese joints in downtown Portland that has kept it going with great food from authentic Chinese dishes to the Americanized combo meals. Very well priced. Lunch specials are no joke. Hot fresh food. Hard working people. Sophi is always ready to greet and serve efficiently. Good PDX old school place.

Love this place! Really great and tasty food. I recommend to give it a try! Unfortunately the neighborhood is quite shady, I would recommend to take a electric scooter to the restaurant. And don't be here in the late night hours.

Golden Horse is our go-to downtown spot for Chinese food. In fact, it has been for the past 18 years. We get takeout every other week or so, and it's always fun to catch up with the staff. I'm a big fan of their noodles, and the salty crunch of their Pepper & Salt Pork is heavenly, as is the squid. Oh, and definitely try the string beans and the eggplant! The Hot & Sour Soup is also excellent! They give you so much food, there is enough for two good-sized meals - at least. The pandemic was hard on downtown in general, and we're grateful this gem is still here for us to enjoy. Golden Horse and the kind folks who run it deserve your support.

The restaurant was quiet. The food portions are large. These were lunch specials! Thefried rice is tasty, and they cook tofu beautifully.

Great food and fast service. We would have tried everything on the menu if not for the inflation and gas prices. 10/10 would recommend the fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. Their spicy beef dish is not spicy unless you think black pepper is “hot”.

Golden Horse is my favorite Chinese restaurant! My family loves to come here whenever we're in the downtown Portland area. Service has always been friendly to us, and food comes rather quickly. Everything I've ordered here has tasted amazing; they have the best egg flower soup and Chinese fried chicken I've ever tried. I would also highly recommend their chicken lo mein and salt and pepper squid.

Found this place by chance on a weekend trip Friday night. My group of 6 people were the only dine-in table that night. We ordered congee, black pepper sizzling beef, beef he fen (sorry I don't know the english name), yuzi doufu, and veggies. The auntie providing service was very patient with us, and provided great recommendations when we weren't sure what to get. The bill was so reasonable - I think it ended up being around 100 for 6 of us before tip.

I have a great affinity for visiting hole in the wall restaurants wherever I travel to, and this restaurant certainly fit the billing. It's in Portland's China town, surrounded by some abandoned and vacant restaurants and businesses, but dont let that scare you away. While Golden Horse isn't much to look at inside or out, the food and service more than makes up for it. Once we placed our order, the food was ready within what seemed like minutes. It was hot and freshly prepared. Each dish had a ton of flavor. My favorite was the Spicy Mongoloan Beef. The waitress on staff was overseeing the entire restaurant, but made sure the needs of each table (including ours) was met. The prices were also good for the quantity of food received. All in all, this was a great dining experience. I would highly recommend giving Golden Horse a try if you're looking for Chinese food and in the area.

Combos are $11 and $12 for dinner. Food is great for American style Chinese takeout, service is always superfast and friendly. It's always pretty sparse inside when I go, but that can be a nice thing to you can find a nice quiet intimate little corner, just relax and enjoy
