Sprinkles & Shakes Ice Cream and Grill
Whoaaaa. More than Sprinkles. More than Shakes. This place has it all. Brick Oven Pizza, Ice Cream, Italian Ice, Potato Pancakes, Waffles and more! Located at 1306 N River Rd in Plains! Ice Cream Hours are 7 days a week 12-9, and Food is offered Thursday-Saturday.
I made a visit to Sprinkles & Shakes about 2 weeks ago on a gorgeous summer night in Plains. I had the pleasure of meeting Bart, owner and operator of this spectacular eatery in Plains, Pa. Bart opened Sprinkles & Shakes 10 years ago this July, and came up with the name, simply because it was 'the smartest and catchiest name they could come up with at the time." Some of the most popular items at Sprinkles and Shakes are the: Patties Apple Pie Sundae (pictured below) and Chicken Wing & Bruschetta Pizzas- All items in which Bart is the most proud of. He says "they go hand in hand." I got to try the Chicken Wing Pizza and I must say, AMAZING!
After reviewing the menu, I asked Bart what menu items he would like people to try and he expressed that he'd like to see more of his customers order a Chicken Wing Mac Attack, and/or their 16 (and counting) home made hard ice creams that comes in a variety of flavors! I am a HUGE fan of Hard Ice Cream. So when I was offered to take my pick after sampling a few, I had to go with the Patties Apple Pie! Soo Damn Good. Topped with Caramel and stuffed into a home made golden waffle cone. Delicious! A perfect treat for a hot summer night! We also cooled down with a few flavors of Italian Ice- Blue Raspberry, Mango, and our favorite, Swedish Fish!!!! So Good. So Cold. So Refreshing.
For Dinner, Bart whipped up a few Brick Oven Pizzas, Ice Cream, and Italian Ices for my friend and I. We were honored to chow down on some
-Shrimp & Vodka Sauce Pizza- Handcrafted with their famous vodka sauce, house blend of cheese, and parsley topped with hand peeled fresh water shrimp.
-Chicken Wing Pizza- made with hand carved oven roasted chicken with their signature wing sauce, bleu cheese, and a variety of blended cheese.
-Finally, a Veggie Lover Pizza- Made with a Blend of Cheeses, homemade blended Roma tomato sauce, sauteed spinach, caramelized onions, wood fire roasted tri colored peppers, roasted chopped broccoli, marinated Roma tomatoes, and wood fired roasted Portobello Mushrooms (all pictured below)
After stuffing the holes in our faces, we agreed that the Chicken Wing one was our favorite but the Shrimp and Vodka came pretty damn close to winning Gold.
After dinner, I asked Bart what his future plans are at Sprinkles & Shakes. He said "besides the pizzas, ice cream, and potato pancakes, they will soon be offering wood fired dinners." So keep and eye out on new menu items that are destined to- lets say- shake things up a bit. When it comes to the menu, Bart tries his best to source as many local ingredients as possible, to support the community. (Don't forget if you are in uniform, you get
a military discount at Sprinkles & Shakes.)
One of my favorite questions I ask chefs and restaurant owners when I dine with them is what other local chefs in the area inspire or inspired them to open an eater in NEPA. When I asked Bart who inspires him, he mentioned John Tabone of Bar Pazzo, Sammy Agolino, and Cosmo Salerno of Cosmo's Cheesesteaks, located in Scranton. He said there are many others who he looks up to for inspiration, but there are too many to list.
Lastly, I asked Bart why someone should visit his pride and joy, Sprinkles & Shakes, and he said " why wouldn't they? they'd be missing out if they didn't"
We really enjoyed visiting Sprinkles & Shakes. Bart definetly owns a GEM here in NEPA and hands down the best Brick Oven Pizza I've eaten to date. The Crust is thick, yet airy, and baked in 3 minutes at 700 degrees. The crust is my favorite part of pizza and Bart NAILED IT! Bart said they never entered any contests but he’d go up against anyone!!
I cannot wait to go back and try the other pizzas he has to offer...
