Much better than it used to be! Went here after a museum event for dinner and it didn’t disappoint. Got two seats at the bar and shared the lavash with hummus. I had the Turkey Devonshire which was delightful and super cheesy, and my friend got the classic burger which was cooked perfectly. If you have been hesitant about giving Union Grill another shot, it won’t disappoint!
It was not the same as it was years ago. Before, it was a California style restaurant and menu. They were closed for a while to remodel, and I expected a lot more changes. While they seem to have a popular crowd, it is certainly geared towards the lunch and college crowd. The food was decent, and a member of our party was happy to find Turkey Devonshire. The menu is limited, and I would like to see items like grilled chicken on the menu and just not for salads.
The only real problem here is the lack of street parking during peak times. Not being from the area I had to drive around a few blocks to find a spot.
We started with the church pierogies, which were good. Then I got the Turkey Devonshire since I knew that was one of their signature dishes. It's a version if Turkey Ala King but it's smothered with bacon on top. Toast, Turkey, gravy, and bacon. Very good. I had a bite of my dad's fish taco and it was really good (no picture of that one). I also got a side of mashed potatoes. I mixed that with the gravy off of the Turkey Devonshire and it was good. I had the cinnamon roll and ice cream for dessert. The homemade ice cream was really good. The cinnamon roll was good but small.
Overall, a good experience.
The Turkey Devonshire pictured on the board outside of the restaurant caught my eye. The actual dish did not disappoint. I would describe it as a decadent open faced turkey sandwich that is topped with a luscious cheese sauce with chopped tomatoes. I thought it would be heavy and difficult to finish (like a Mac and cheese dish would be) but I found the dish was just right for me. One of the better turkey dishes that I’ve ever had. 😋
The Pittsburgh salad with blackened chicken was a nice surprise. My spouse described it as a balanced meal - veggies, protein (blackened chicken) and fries. I was lucky that I could taste it because it is a salad I would order again. 😋
The ice cream is made in-house!!
Me and my family got the French onion soup as well as two burgers and the Greek salad. The French onion soup tastes even better than it looks (and I think it looks splendid). The salmon burger and chicken teriyaki burger were very good, however the pickles were strong and meat could use a little more seasoning. The Greek salad had lots of veggies, not just lettuce!! This is great when you are trying to stay healthy on a trip. The atmosphere was good, music was a little loud at times but we could always hear each other. Mondo water glasses were awesome, you can hold them with two hands and not feel dumb. Our waitress was super nice too!
Had to try the legendary Turkey Devonshire. Trust me, it did not disappoint! Very good!
Had a great burger, place was bustling with fun energy, and our server was really terrific. I think he was Chris. Very attentive service, reasonable prices. Would recommend. Will go there again.
Decided to try Union Grill after they underwent a big renovation in recent years. The upgrade to Union Grill's atmosphere is great. It's much more modern and welcoming. The staff are amazingly kind and attentive. The food however, did not undergo a revitalization. The food is good enough but a little old-fashioned and bland. The cheeseburger was in desperate need of seasoning - just a simple sprinkle of salt and pepper. The Mediterranean Lavash was a fresh and fun, sharable starter. I probably wouldn't go back, but only because it wasn't really my vibe.
Love this place! I've been here twice since it was recently renovated and the atmosphere is great! I've also had the opportunity to meet the owner and he is the life of this restaurant. He checks in on the tables, chats with regulars, and makes you feel right at home. The menu has a little bit of everything but my favorite is the traditional salad with french fries. I definitely plan on returning soon!
Perfect location in Oakland. Close to museums and interesting shops. Ample side street parking (we easily found a free spot). Neatly tucked in with a variety of restaurants and cuisines. Friendly wait staff. Delicious mixed drinks. Great food and portion sizes. Indoor and outdoor seating. Relaxing, laid back atmosphere.
