Review Modo Mio Taverna - Philadelphia

Definitely one of our favorites hands down!! The food and service are incredible. Chef Peter is always accommodating of food allergies/diet preferences. Everything is fresh and homemade with the best ingredients. I also love that the menu changes seasonally so you can always try something different. You must go here!!

Stopped in for Sunday brunch with our kids today and had a wonderful experience. Service was thoughtful and attentive - the chef even stopped by to say hello :) The brunch buffet and antipasti we had were all delicious. Solid drinks from the bar. The space is bright, cozy and welcoming. We will definitely be back!

I was pleasently surprised. We tried calamari with zucchini, but it was not just appetizer but a dish with variaty of flavor (lemon, spices, herbs). We also tried matriciana and trout and desserts. Everything was delicious. All personnel was super friendly and great. They have several seating outside for when the weather is nice. Street is not too crowded so we had a great experience and it's in the neighborhood. Will be definitely coming again

Amazing food and atmosphere. Great, responsive and caring staff serving up a wonderful mix of decadent and delicious food clearly prepared with love. The Shut up and Eat special between 9-10pm is not to be missed. The lasagna with a fried egg on top was certainly something special

Went here on a hot Sunday on a whim- and so glad we did! We went with their 3 course brunch deal (app, entree and dessert) for $30 which was a great deal. Served a delicious amuse bouch of endive with Gorgonzola and fig jam (yum!) and some delicious bread with olive oil and a touch of ricotta. For apps the table got the burrata and peach salad, calamari and fried artichoke. All excellent! Entrees we got the shakshuka, eggs basildict (play on Benedict with sausage, provolone and basil crema) and the fried mortadella sandwich. All very tasty and large portions. We were so stuffed by dessert we took them to go and the flourless chocolate cake was excellent! Our waiter was lovely and the place has great neighborhood vibes- can't wait to come back.

If I could rate 10 stars I would! Chef's food is absolutely amazing, Jen is one of the most welcoming people I have ever met (her espresso martinis are to die for), and the ambiance brings the entire atmosphere together! A hidden gem and on my top 3 lists of best places to dine at in Philly.

My favorite restaurant in Philly! Creative, delicious and always fresh and seasonal. Menu changes daily. Very friendly and attentive staff.

An absolute wonderful evening and dinner with my son. We are visiting from Portland, OR and stumbled upon this place. It was by far the best service, food and dinning experience I've had in years! Our server was top-notch and made fantastic food recommendations. It was really nice to treat my kiddo to his first fancy dinner! Thank you.

Wow. We were so impressed with the quality and taste of the food and the service. We got the artichoke and beets, plus some vino. Can’t recommend this spot enough.

The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. When we walked in - the ambience was quite nice but what we got was far better than we could’ve hoped. Our service was great, every course was delicious, and the wine selection was nice as well. I will be back and soon.

We will return here often. The menu listed a four course meal for under $35. We got six courses and each was wonderful!

The area is undergoing a renaissance so don't be put off as you drive down Girard Avenue. This place is a delightful find.

Great!. Awesome! From our greeting when we walked in by the hostess, to dessert and coffee- it was a wonderful experience. Lucia, our waitress was super, as were all the staff. I started with the scallop, then the lasagna, the veal ( out of this world) and finally dessert- ricotta cheesecake and cappuccino. I can't wait to go back.

Had reservations at 915 pm on a Saturday night. My husband and I showed up at 906 pm and were told by the female hostess that it would be a few minutes before she could seat us and that we could go wait outside... Like we were somehow invading her space and taking up room in the empty forum in front of the restaurant. Like I want to wait outside on the street corner when it's now 930 and we still haven't been seated? I think if she was more cordial about it I wouldn't be pissed right now but customer service and hospitality go a long way. If I make reservations for 2 at 915 that's when I expect to be seated and not standing on the corner. If the food and remaining service is impeccable I will update my review.

Modo Mio has consistently given me some of threat meals of my life. Innovative, varied, and delicious, this lite BYOB is easy to walk right by if you're not looking for it. I recommend it I everyone. If you don't like this food, you either have no taste, or you're so stuck in snobbery that you won't allow the creativity of the menu to lodge itself firmly into your memory bank. I recommend this place to others on a regular basis.

I'd call it a hidden gem but you should know about this place by now. For the value there is not a better restaurant in this city or country I can think of. If it's on the menu get the lasagna with egg on top. You can thank me later.

Outstanding. Now, I admittedly don't eat out all that often, so my sample size is fairly small, but this was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. The Menu Turista (tasting menu) is the way to go. The portions aren't very large, but they are perfect for multiple courses- you'll be pleasantly full at the end of the meal, but not uncomfortable. In addition, the wait staff was wonderful. Always attentive but not intrusive. If you have any doubts about going to Modo Mio, you shouldn't! It's a great choice for an excellent night out.

Best Italian Restaurant NOT in Italy. For those whose experiences were not great, I feel sorry for them, because this has been a consistently outstanding Italian restaurant. It is the best restaurant we've eaten in outside of Italy - really. The food is inventive and always delicious, so much so that we can recall the flavors of just about everything we've ever had there. The service is outstanding and the bread is remarkable (too bad they don't sell it). What it lacks in local ambiance (working-class neighborhood), it makes up for in every other way.

"OUTSTANDING" went to dinner with friends last night and our meal was fantastic. Love the 4 course small plates. Will definately go back and will tell everyone I know to try it!

Very small dinning room and reservations are a MUST. With food this good take no chances. Smaller portions but outstanding food and service.

Love Modo Mio. I tried Modo Mio for the first time with a couple of friends and we all loved it. I suggest doing the $33, 4 course dinner and bringing a nice bottle of wine. This restaurant definitely is one more addition to the area that is making Northern Liberties a prime destination spot for dining...
I particularly loved the Raviolo..

Hidden Jem. This place reminds of Vetri's cousin. The food is sublime, and delicate and the prices are unexpectedly excellent. I love the 4 courses for $35 and also break out some nice bottles to bring there since it is a BYO. The neighbor is not that great, so it is really a destination rather than discovering it on a night out. Will go back again and again - only negative is that there is no reservation system which is annoying that you have to either wait or go for the early bird special.

A hidden gem. I went there a months ago and had one of the best meals I had in philly. They have a really good deal for $33 a person for 4 courses with the portion size not being to small or big. They have the best mussel's I've ever had. Top 10 BYO's in Philly without a doubt.

Modo mia. I had sunday dinner on may 30,2010 with friends, we had the worst italian food ever, and it was not cheap $95. per couple without .liquor. the meat was heavy with salt and cheese. The pasta sauce was too heavy for the pasta. you could not taste the food becauce everything was covered with heavy sauce, cheese,a d salt. .

UNIQUE/SPECIAL. The extraordinarily talented and inventive chef/owner Peter McAndrews and his top-notch kitchen staff and waitpersons make this small neighborhood BYOB on the north side of Girard Avenue between Front and 2nd a very special place. The food is like none you will ever find elsewhere in Philly! Go and enjoy, but be sure to make reservations if your party is larger than six. I highly recommend this excellent restaurant!

Fabulous!. Difficult to find if you're not quite sure what you're looking for, you feel as though you're privy to an insider secret when you walk into this small, hip restaurant. Slightly cramped and full of chatter, you may feel as though you've come upon a family gathering.

We were seated immediately and our server was knowledgable and attentive. My party all decided to take up the offer of the four course meal (at a bargain $33 dollars each). The cuisine was absolutely phenomenal; every bite, from the appetizer to the main dish, melted in our mouths and left us anticipating the next wonder for our senses. The desserts were the perfect conclusion to this adventure of a meal... may I recommend the flourless chocolate cake?

The servings are smaller, but appropriate. From start to finish, I cannot think of a dissappointment I incurred. My friends and I had such an amazing time. We arrived for dinner at 8:30p and ended up "closing the joint" after 11!
(and, the waitstaff didn't even rush us out the door when it approached the end of their shift)

If you're looking to something new, this semi-casual, Italianesque eatery is a great choice!

In development?. I really like the story of this place - small and welcoming, in an edgy neighborhood, with a Philly-native chef who's studied in Piemonte, yet spins his own variations on Italian themes. Love the creativity behind the menu, but we found nothing to get excited about once the bread was gone.

The crespelle with gorgonzola and radicchio, for example, led my Italian friend to ask, "$11 for this little piece of s---?" Thought it was a linguistic thing at first - "crespelle" is plural, yet she was given one triangular crepe, maybe 5-6 inches wide - but knew what she meant as soon as she shared a bite. The $22 bistecca alla Bismarck was the toughest piece of beef I've bit into since college. I ordered agnolotti, figuring the chef learned how to do them well while in Italy. Nope. Missing were the nuanced flavors of slow roasted meat filling and the traditional triangular shape whose pasta retains a bite. What arrived were round meat dumplings, in a homemade pasta that served only to hold the meat in place, and a butter sage sauce barely melted. So not worth the calories, or the $78 we spent.

The waiter seemed offended that we neither ordered the menu turista, at $33/head for four courses, or a dessert, yet never asked us if we were satisfied with the meal. I wonder if the place just needs to emerge from its tweens.....the story of the place is otherwise so right.

"My Way" not quite enough. This place deserves an A+ for intrepidness plunking down a sizable investment to renovate a 2nd & Girard corner into a smart looking though austere Italianate trattoria. Batali might have been proud of the beef cheeks; meaty perfectly cooked sitting in just enough rich demi but with enough salt to gag a moose. Unfortunate and an obvious blunder which the owner graciously attempted to rectify with less than satisfactory results. Food OK across the board and the menu holds promise. Also need to understand how to take a reservation which seems to be the last detail that new restaurants address and that should start with receptionists who are just a tad less clueless. Place shows definite promise and will develop if the owner and chef stay on ot.

A culinary delight. It is a small seating area (very noisey) and, therefore, crowded. The tasting menu was exceptional. Whether it was the seared scallops or crispy duck medallion, the flavors integrated to bring out the essence of the scallop or the duck. I consider it a wonderful find.

On a a cold winter evening with reservations in place and a bottle of red in our hand we made our way to Northern Liberties to dine at Peter McAndrew's Modo Mio. Three hours later we left in a state of ecstasy. It is hard finding the words to explain our dining experience at Modo Mio. All I can say is that it was one of the best. Having recently experienced L'Artusi in New York City I can confidently say that the meal at Modo Mio far exceeded L'Artusi (it also cost a quarter of the price...although in their defense I am sure they pay much more for rent). I can say one thing: I have been dreaming of my meal ever since our visit and although my rule for our year in Philadelphia is to try each restaurant once I am confident this restaurant deserves that rule to be broken. We walked into a small dim lit dining room and were seated at one of the dozen or so tables lining the wall. The decor: homegrown, classic, no frills Italian. Ambiance: loud. Very loud. The Food: The menu consisted of

...isn't your pedestrian Italian fare. However, adults - and their kids with bold palates - will no doubt enjoy McAndrews' reign over creative Italian cuisine

Modo Mio is a beloved BYOB in fishtown. I don't really know anyone who hasn't liked the place. It's been open for a few years, and I have no idea why I waited so long to go. It was

Years ago, Modo Mio was one of the suggestions my friend made for a good prix fixe dinner in Philly. Years later, we finally went together, though the premise was the same: $35 for four courses (menu turista), cash only, BYOB. We brought a bottle of rioja, with its bold flavors from aged grapes, to go with the equally bold flavors of the authentic Italian offerings at Modo Mio. Whether you order off the menu turista or a la carte, the portions remained the same-- perfect portions so that one individual can go through four courses without busting a gut. Our picks for antipasti were the special crab cake and carpaccio; pasta picks were risotto and special gnocchi; secondi picks were prosciutto wrapped trout and lamb; and for dessert, we had tiramisu and pear tart. My friend had no complaints, though I did have a couple. The fruit chutney atop my crabcake overpowered the delicate crab, so I ate them separately. Same for the prosciutto that was too salty and heavy for the trout, though I d
