Review H D's Onion Burgers - Oklahoma City

Berto Bennett
Had lunch with Mom in my old neck of the woods. Hadn’t tried HD yet and boy was I happy we did. The burger was so fresh and juicy with lots of flavor and crispy bacon. The curly fries were great with a crispy outside and soft inside. They are so nice and have plenty of options for a great price. Enjoy!

My favorite burger in Oklahoma City so far, “ate” the jalapeño burger (more like inhaled) and curly fries. ✅ Large portions for the price ✅food was fresh including vegetables and cooked perfectly ✅They took care of me and made sure my cup was always full with a smile. Also, they take Apple Pay***

Super-friendly people, great hamburgers, and fair prices. Hamburgers are a huge 6oz and hand-made from actual ground beef. I had the onion burger with the onions grilled in, and my husband had the same but with cheese. He had onion rings, and I had regular fries. Service was excellent and efficient, with drink refills before we even asked. Will definitely keep this place in mind.

I went in originally to sell them some business internet and phone service but came out a customer of theirs instead! I thought the onion cheese burger was amazing and better than Tucker's down the street. Great family-run business with excellent food. I'll be visiting again soon!

Best burger and gyro in OKC! Great service!!!
Brandon H
It's not hard to make a good gyro, but it's also not easy to make an exceptional one! Stuffed full. Even sliced onions (most places slices are uneven and too thick) flavorful meat. Well done. Great service and even answered the phone to help me over 1hr before they opened up.

Well, you can tell from the photo, we forgot to take a picture before diving in, it smelled so good! We both had an onion cheeseburger; I ordered the chili cheese fries and my wife had onion rings. All of the food was made to order and delicious! The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. We noticed there was a steady stream of take out orders as well. We didn’t have room for dessert but the homemade cakes looked good, too.

Super affordable, great customer service, authentic gyros, dope food, curly fries were bomb

Some of the best American food I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating. Staff was so nice and the atmosphere was extremely cozy will be coming back for sure!

I ate here years ago & that had great food then....I haven't been soooo full in my life, the service was superb, the food was hot excellently made, & filling to my stomach....I will be back very soon, what are you waiting on, GO GET YOUR VISIT ON!!!

I had the Western Burger, fries, and hi-c, and it was very good. The service was excellent! Background music was very nice. I will be coming back. Thank you, HD'S Onion Burgers.

Onion burger with cheese and bacon was fantastic! Fries were excellent and the staff was very friendly! Will definitely go back soon!

Great family owned restaurant. Hamburgers & gyros are delicious, reasonably priced. Eli is an excellent waitress, absolutely recommend.
Brett Lamb
Absolutely amazing place! Delicious hamburger and wonderful crispy french fries and the onions are perfect!! I will definitely be eating here again!!

I’ve been eating here for 10 years now. Easily my favorite onion burger in OKC and the staff is always friendly. I highly recommend it!
Flora Wilkerson
Big, juicy, delicious burgers. Unlike other onion burger places we’ve tried these didn’t taste like only onions. The beef was cooked perfectly, not too greasy, and bacon was crispy. Definitely recommend!

food is good, service is good. only compliant is hours of operation or strange, seems to close early a lot.

I went here with a friend on a recent Wednesday for lunch. We left our workplace at noon and arrived at 12:15 pm. We found seats for ourselves at a booth in the middle of the dining room floor but decided after waiting there for a couple minutes that we wanted to be closer to the action. We moved to the bar that gives you a direct line of sight to the stainless steel grill. We also had a better view of the bumper stickers that almost cover the vent hood.

We are both onion burger fans, so that is what we ordered. I got a double onion burger with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. I added ketchup and mustard after it was served. It was hard to hold when it came out to me because it was so hot. That is a positive feature in my judgment. I also liked the fact that they did not skimp on the tomatoes or the pickles. However, if you don't like many pickles, make sure you ask for just one or two.

The bun and burger patties were the same circumference; I don't like it when one is larger than the other. There was not an intense onion flavor while I was eating the burger, but a pleasant onion-beef aftertaste lingered in my mouth all afternoon. The bun almost disintegrated from all of the burger, tomato, lettuce, and pickle juices before I finished eating the burger. Be aware if you're like me and can't stand having your hands sticky from all of those juices. There was nothing remarkable about the bun. It was a standard food service grade burger bun.

Overall, the onion burgers here are comparable to what I had at Sid's in El Reno. They're not as good as Tucker's Onion Burger or Nic's Grill, but they're definitely worth a return trip. Service was friendly and speedy.

Nothing like eating a burger that is the same consistency as an egg sandwich not to mention I ordered a basket of fries with my Togo order and received the same amount of fries that came with another customers kids meal I sat there the whole time they prepared my order and the same person handling the produce and raw meat then was all up in the register and then back on the floor serving food and then back touching/preparing food no hand washing no gloves the whole time I was there
Robert Marks
Dirty. Didnt interact much with the staff but watched him cook and clean at the same time. Should never pick up a rug and think a quick wipe on your hip rag makes it okay put my burger together. Fries are indeed greasy. Will be staying away.

Good. HDs is a pretty good place, although a little close to being too pricey. The burgers are good, but not very big for the price. I do like how they have real hamburger meat that they smash on the grill. If you don't get the onions, you still get some of the taste from them doing burgers and onions on the same grill, so if you don't care for the taste of onions, that may be a deterrent. The fries and tots are always made to order, so it may take a bit to let them cool. I will say they don't do the best at draining the grease from the basket. They usually just flick it a time or two, so you do end up with some greasy fries or tots. The coneys are open faced and the chili could be Great Value or Hormel, but its not bad. They do fry the wiener, but it didn't end up being greasy.
As far as the service, there's one gentleman that works there named Mac and he's a pretty good guy. His English is not always the best, but he treats everyone like they are important and tries to make the dining experience good.

Maybe I should have read reviews before getting food. Son has gone to get it now. I'm a pretty good critic of restaurants. So after I eat and digest, I will come back and post my thoughts!

MMMM SLAW MMM CONEYS. So just to reiterate the slaw is delicious. I get it added to my hamburgers and love it on the coney. For those complaining about the service, I'm surprised as I honestly think they're just very reserved and respectful. They're not overly friendly, but they turn out some good food. Definitely get the slaw added to a hamburger (even with the additional cost) if you like that kind of thing. Gives it a great flavor that compliments the juiciness of the burger. I'll agree the prices are a little higher than normal, but what's an extra dollar versus the tasteless patties at normal chain burger places?

Greasy, Tasty, but poor service. Anytime I'm in the mood for something greasy my girlfriend and I will go to HD's. The food is always very good. The price is decent, but almost is on the pricey side.

The recent renovations they've made really helps the burger joint seem a little less like a hole in the wall and more like a decent place to eat.

The biggest reason I don't come to HD burgers more often is because of the way the staff tends to treat you. They treat you with the sense that they know they have a good thing going and that you'll deal with their attitude.

Also my take out order is often wrong. Nothing big, but a small nuisance.

Check your bag!!!. First off if you plan to ignore the reviews then be sure to check your bag and your wrapped food. We ordered a combo meal and received no fries (had to go back up and get them, only to return home to cold food). The gyro was ordered with onions, no lettuce or tomato, and extra cucumber sauce. There were no onions and no extra sauce. We ordered tots with cheese-bad idea. Tots were greasy and cheese had no flavor, nor did the onion cheeseburger that I ordered with mayo only, which by the way was dripping off with everyway bite. I could only get through half the burger and fed the rest to my dog; my son ate 3 tots and was done. $18 pretty much wasted. Onion rings were okay, a bit on the greasy side. I have had their gyros before and they are not bad if they get the order right. More than likely we will not be going back.
OKC Jimbo
Excellent onion burgers, made from scratch rather than the freezer. Hand cut fries. My son and I come here often. Friendly staff.

Probably the Best OB in OKC. I like their Onion Burgers. They might be a tie with Bunny's Onion Burgers, and Irma's Burger Shack. The fries are great but greasy. The atmosphere is fine, nothing special and the staff basically does their job.
Mack
Not so hot.... I've been searching for a replacement for Johnnies, which just doesn't seem the same anymore, so I tried HD's. While the staff was friendly, I found the burger to be rather flavorless. The fries were piping hot, but limp and greasy. Afraid I'll keep looking...
Sooner Soul Man
Dirty & Stinky bathrooms. Ketchup had turned to vinegar. Not friendly and seemed unclean. Burger was good but fries were greasy. Won't go back.

11, on a scale of 1-10. Tried for the first time the other evening to use a coupon we got in the mail. The burger was so good this will be my new go-to place.

I got the double cheeseburger and my wife got the single. Based on a couple reviews here, we ordered the mustard slaw which was a very good addition. We split an order of fries, which were thick-cut and could have been cooked just a bit longer...so I'll be sure to ask for well-done fries next time. Our total bill with a coupon was only $12 which I thought was very reasonable. I am a self-professed burger connoisseur and rank this burger as my new #1 over S&B's on nw 59th (tough call..maybe a tie), Plantation Inn (Medicine Park...close call), Flat tire, Little Mike's, McNellie's, Pop's, Freddie's, Irma's, Earl's, Ron's Burger Grill, Johnnie's, Tucker's, and Meer's (Medicine Park).

I have no connection to HD's and in the spirit of fairness I'd like to address some of the negatives posted by people apparently walking around with a big chip on their shoulder:
1. Service- it was basic and sufficient. This is a simple burger joint with an amazing burger, that's all you need.
2. Waitress lady- we were nice to her and she was nice back. Not talkative but so what, we came for a burger.
3. Prices- our total bill was $12...without coupon would have been around $14. That's pretty cheap.
4. Charge for water- they do not...we got 2 big waters free.
5. Fries- definitely not microwaved...they were so hot from the fryer we had to wait a minute.
6. Greasy- friends, that's "juicy" when it relates to a burger...the fries were like Johnnie's- a tad greasy...so what
7. Bottom line- the name is "HD's Onion Burger" and they do that exceptionally well, better than most.

I've never eaten here, but my husband and I decided to try it. I was very upset at the service received. The open sign was turned off as soon as we got out the car. It was not even closing time. He even stared at us as we were leaving. I'm not going to write the first thought that came to mind but that was extremely rude. Hopefully it wasn't a color issue. I left and went to Freddy's where the service was excellent.

To keep it simple, the food is great but the service is horrible. Actually horrible is an understatement. That's giving them a little credit. The service is incredibly terrible. There's only one person who usually waits on tables (if you can call it waiting). She ALWAYS has the worst attitude. If she hates her job so much, she might as well quit. The owner, also exemplifies this attitude towards their customers. Ridiculous. I recommend the food, but if you can't handle rudeness and long waits, AVOID.
D N F
Too rude. They should lower their prices to make up for the horrible customer service. They are rude even if you call the order in!!! The food is ok however, the service is very bad. they are very discourteous and never smile. I have to say that they have the best sweet tea ever. I won't be going back though. they took all my money and gave me the worst service.
Lindy
Went there with an 8 top for lunch. We were the only table there and the staff was rude and acted like it was an inconvenience for us to be there. They charge for water. The burger was decent but I refuse to eat where the staff is hateful.

Small but Tasty. A small little "Hole in the wall" type place, its food is great. The staff is always friendly and warm. It isn't a spot your going to walk in and find amazing. It has bumper stickers over the stove that are fun to check out and old style signs and such on the wall. The food is great though. Never had a bad meal there.
Free To Eat
Mediocre. I don't know what it is, but I've never gotten a burger here that made me think twice. Eventually I just quit. An onion burger at other places seems to have just a bit more flavor. Also, the atmosphere is rather quiet. Cheese fries are microwaved, which ruins them.
Einafets
Tasty. I love their onion burgers with lettuce, pickles and slaw. I think I'm addicted to that mustard slaw. It definitely boosts the burger. The fries can be a bit greasy, but this is an onion burger joint. It's part of the fanfair, so deal with it or order the onion rings. They're good as well, not hand made, but still good.
The Philly is pretty good as well. Not your traditional Philly, but the bread has a nice crunchy and chewy combination that helps soak up all the meat grease and deliciousness!
Joe
Worst Onion Burger ever. On top of the soggy fries and greasy pita that came with my gyros, the store was out of ketchup and forks. The greek salad was served with ranch dressing and not a thing greek in the salad. In addition, when I called and asked to speak to the owner or mgr. I was hung up on not once but twice.
Chris
Egh. Just ok. Burger was a bit bland. Onions were stringy. Fries were soft and greasy. All in all, I'd say it was boring. I can think of several fast food places that I would enjoy more.
Urbcwgrl8
Mmmm. This is place to go for onion burgers. Great flavor and nice portion size. The thing that will surprise you is how wonderful the gyro is. The meat is so tender and the slaw makes it out of this world. Go give it a try

My experience was not good at HD's. I have written two honest reviews but they were removed. The burger and fries I had were saturated in grease. I was only able to take two bites before I realized That was all I could eat. I will never go there again.

One of the Best. HD's has Fantastic onion burgers!! As good as you will find any where! But what makes them even better is the unique "mustard slaw" that can be served on the side or on the burger itself. It's a sort of coleslaw made with mustard and other heavenly ingredients that sets off the flavor of onion burgers just perfectly! I've never had it anywhere else. The burgers are cooked behind the counter where you can watch if you want. They will fix the burgers however you like them. I've had the fries (a little greasy, but hey, isn't that what onion burger joints are about?) but prefer the onion rings. I hazard to guess the onion rings are frozen, but they are still good. The soft drinks are dispensed from a fountain and are large and very tasty -- free refills of course. The service is good and the staff is friendly. The atmosphere is small tables with checkered tableclothes and interesting posters, pictures and memorabilia on the walls. Bottom Line. You Like Onion Burgers -- You Won't Want to Miss HDs.
