A new experience for me. Today for breakfast I ventured to Nyack and a downtown café called Johnny Cakes Café. What a great old style restaurant. It has the look and feel of a post WW II or early 50’s place with a long lunch counter. When I asked one of the people who worked there he said he used to eat here as a kid, and he, like me, has experienced much since we were kids.
A johnnycake is a cornmeal cake, a grittier texture and more of a cornbread flavor than your typical buttermilk pancakes. I had to try some, so I got a short stack and also a side of corned beef hash and an egg. Maybe johnnycakes are readily available in this area but for me, it was a great foodie experience. I liked mine with a little syrup and the short stack was a perfect amount for me. Their hash was also quite good.
There was an added level of activity this early Sunday morning as the town prepared for Springfest, an outdoor event along Main St this weekend. I very much enjoyed my visit to Nyack and JohnnyCakes and recommend both.
Great Spot in Nyack!. On a recent trip to NY w my 3 kids, we enjoyed a delicious brunch at Johnny Cakes in Nyack. The signature dish (cornmeal pancakes, which we ordered stuffed w yogurt & granola) was unique and delicious, and the portion size was huge. We also ordered the Southwestern omelet and eggs florentine, which were awesome and very fresh -- and also large portions. Chocolate chip pancakes were downed by the kids in minutes, and there were happy thumbs ups all around. The "throwback" ambiance is terrific. The service was friendly, professional, and attentive, and we will definitely be back again!!!
