I had never had korean food before but I can confirm that it was delicious! The uniqueness of the food/the unique seating and the ambience of the restaurant were exquisite! As a vegetarian it is often hard to find decent food but this place really hit the top spot!!! If you're visiting new york definitely stop by this restaurant!!!

It's so exciting to find this beautiful vegan korean restaurant. The space itself is cozy and traditional looking. The tables are low, you have to take your shoes off before going in. Every time the servers bring you a dish, they provide an intimate experience. I mean, they prepare the noodles carefully on your table with different sauces and ingredients. Just the way they serve the lemonade is special. The food was delicious, really worth the price.

In New York, a Korean restaurant, in China Town, serving Vegetarian food, and its YUM! Uncanny, but true. A small restaurant with a limited menu but enough variety, extremely helpful servers, and impeccable service. A must visit for all vegetarians!

Fave place for korean in the city. Love the avocado bibambap. Half a point taken off for the sometimes snooty service from the people at the front desk.

Best meal I had in NYC on a recent trip. They have these rice cakes that are just addictive in a hot pot dish. Never thought one could do vegetarian dishes with Korean food but they proved me wrong. They did it and did it spectacularly. Was surprised that even the lightly fried mushrooms were delicious. Traditional seating and tight quarters but worth it.

My first experience to this Korean place has been outstanding... an awesome vegetarian and vegan place I must say ... we did make reservations as this place always has waiting or sold out ...
1. Sweet Corn and Spinach Soup - was just like baby food, served hot and just had some salt - 3/10
2. Appetizer - Combination Pancakes
Which was leek, kimchi mushroom & kabocha pumpkin with mung beans - overall very bland and not very tasteful - just tiny bite size pieces - 5/10*
3. Tofu Kimchi Hotpot - tofu with Korean cabbage and veggies in a hotpot was delicious - very soupy and flavourful- 9/10
4. Spicy Chili Mushrooms - was super delicious ... 4 different types of mushrooms were cut and perfectly blended in a spicy chili sauce - 10/10
5. Purple Rice - very well made which went perfectly well with the above dishes - 10/10

Do order the spicy and regular kimchi - best Korean cabbage!

The best part is you got to remove your shoes and sit down and enjoy the meal ... a little expensive to ones pocket but definitely not a miss !!

A haven for vegetarians and vegans. Even the meat lovers won't miss the meat. Lychee Mojito, Stuffed Shitake Mushrooms, Bean Curd with Kimchi and Vegetables in Spicy Sauce, and Tofu Chocolate Pudding were some of my favorites.

Hangawi is by far one of the coolest Asian dining experiences I have had. A very nice, Vegetarian Korean restaurant that serves some great food.

But what makes the experience different and special is how the restaurant follows their traditional seating culture. First off, you are requested to take off your shoes before you enter the dining area; they give you a pair of slippers for use within the restaurant. Then you sit on the floor with a cushion underneath to make your seat comfortable. Also the way they have designed it, you will get to hang your legs down, as its raised seating. I suppose they figured not everyone is comfortable in the yogi style seating ☺.

The ambience is very nice and soothing with low lighting and dark wood fit out. Some cool art of the walls. The staff and service are excellent, giving you a Zen feel. Loved everything we tried from the menu.

If you enjoy Asian cuisine then this place is a great spot in NYC!

Amazing. The best part of my entire NYC trip. Plant based whole food diet friendly. Atmosphere was killer. Wear clean socks as you will be removing your shoes.

I went with my non-vegetarian mom, and we both enjoyed the food! We got the vegetable fritters, black truffle dumplings , pancake platter and Zen Stone Rice Bowl. I would highly recommend the pancakes and will absolutely get them again! I liked the stone rice bowl a lot too, and the dumplings were a great dish to share. In terms of vibes, HanGawi is a cool experience. You take off your shoes when you arrive, and the seats are cushions on the ground, with openings under the tables so you can still sit with your legs hanging. The tables are kind of close together and the waitstaff may have to lean over/around you to serve food though.

When you come inside you take off your shoes. You're seated at these comfortable low intimate tables. I wanted to try everything on the menu. The cocktails were good with suju, try the Lychee Mojito (sweet) or Purple Lotus Tea Martini. (Not that strong but tasty). Highly recommend choosing an appetizer, entree, and dessert. The recommendations I asked for from our server were on par. Everything he recommended was 10/10.

Such a treat every time! My third time going here - my friends and I split the pancakes platter, crispy mushrooms, kimchi bibimbap, and spicy rice cakes. They used to have a black sesame cake that was amazing, but the chocolate cake was very good as well. My friends also enjoyed the teas. $50 for each of us split 3 ways. Truly worth it given how much we enjoyed each dish. My personal favorite was the spicy rice cakes (not spicy which may disappoint some, but very tasty). I’d recommend splitting dishes family style, you won’t regret the trip!

This place was such a great finding! The food was terrific, and filling; the ambience was unparalleled. Overall, excellent value. Each course in the prix fixe a surprise and a delight. The Japanese decoration created perfect harmony and gave me a very relaxing time.

Where to begin? Having lived in Korea for three years, I'll say: this is as good as it gets! Food is absolutely outstanding. The vegan spin on crispy pork in sweet and sour sauce (탕수육) was the showstopper for us. The set menu looked fantastic, but everything à la carte was equally appetizing. We chose the latter for time constraints. Can't wait to come back for the seasonal prix fixe.

An excellent restaurant for fantastic Korean food. Completely vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurant.I loved the Hangawi Stone bowl for the main course meal. Vegetable dumplings were great appetizer option as well. Ginger tea is fantastic and recommend to get it. I spilled a cocktail by mistake and they were so kind to replace it and I was very impressed seeing their response. Thank you to their staff for their kind gesture. The atmosphere was great, food was fantastic and people are awesome at the restaurant. Must visit place if you love and appreciate amazing food options

The absolute finest meal and dining experience we’ve had in NYC! With traditional seating, attentive staff and amazing food, we binged to the point of overeating! Would highly recommend getting reservations well in advance. And do try their stuff mushrooms, as well as their refresher beverage (non alcoholic).

Would highly recommend coming to Hangawi if you get the chance. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service is great. We ordered the spicy baby dumplings and the rice cakes, which we would recommend getting. The crispy mushrooms were crispy and savory. We also ordered the plum tea and the shissandra chinesis tea. We both liked the shissandra chinesis tea more, but both were sweet and delightful. We ordered the noodles with matsutake, they had a very mild flavor and it was a very large quantity. Because we had lots of flavorful food beforehand, we weren't able to taste it. But if I went back and only ordered 1 thing, I would order it again. We ordered the spicy kimchi and tofu bowl. It was a nice way to end the meal. I would order it if you like kimchi.

Having a reservation here is recommended. Loved the food and service. Staff were attentive and friendly. Before being seated, shoes must be removed and staff will take care of them. Dining experience is one of a kind. We ordered Spicy baby dumplings, sesame leaf covered tofu, and tofu hot pot. All the items tasted fresh and to our likes. We will be back to try more items. Recommend this place.

By far one of the best restaurants i have been so far in nyc. Great food, great staff, great atmosphere- everything was just up to the mark. The place was very clean and had a unique concept of sitting similarly to the japanese style of dining. Everything is vegan in this restaurant. Recommend getting a reservation prior visiting this restaurant. I loved the bibimbap and its red beans ice cream. And would definitely recommend the spicy baby dumplings - though it says spicy but it was quite mild.
