Like the others have said, hidden in plain site.
Had the 'fried' catfish, baked mac & cheese, and a green salad.
Very good, very small & very friendly.
Hiding in plain sight. This is a place can walk right past and not notice. The store is narrow, the sign small. But its done well in this spot since the mid-1980s because it is a wonderful, reasonably priced neighborhood slice of wonderful.
The menu is hard to find. People just seem to know what's available and what the prices are. In addition to regular deli items, they serve all kinds of extra fish items. Its also a small grocery, jammed with all kinds of items.
The shrimp po boy is not much bigger than a small, but was high quality and packed full of medlum-to-large sized fresh ones. My fried fish plate was about as good as you could ever get in a deli -- extremely fresh, moist, lightly battered. I got mine with two sides -- the macaroni (and cheese) and cooked peas.
There were 5 or 6 tables jammed in there, but there could have been more if they'd clear away some of the stacked papers, memorabilia and the piano (!) But that would take away from its local flavor. I'm glad that stuff is there.
It is hard to picture a better little neighborhood deli.
Wonderful local color. VERY inexpensive. Home cooking, po-boys, corporate executives stand next to Meyer maids.
This is a great lunch option. They have almost no menu. Just go ask the people at the counter in the back what sandwiches they still have. They also have daily hot plate lunch specials. One shining star is Friday's specials: crawfish etouffee or oven fried fish.
Awesome lunch as always! Had to stop in one last time before they close their doors for good! I've known the Owen's sisters for 30 years, sorry to see them go. This is....was one of the best hole in the wall restaurants in town! I'll miss them a lot! Good Luck Ladies!
Amazing place I stumbled on with my siblings last winter. We were visiting and I wanted to stay away from tourist traps and this deli was highly rated on Urban Spoon - with good reason! I had the fried catfish, potato salad and beans. The food was great, but the tartar sauce was PERFECT (I don't care much for tartar sauce usually and got extra of this.) My siblings both had the baked catfish, with rice and beans but since there wasn't much left, the chef gave them some etouffe as well. My brother fishes a lot and said this was the best fish he'd ever had and the etouffee was silky and wonderful. The place is totally sketchy looking, over crowded with decades of only god knows, with seating for about 4 people inside, but get the food and chow down! I wish we could've gone back, but we were with too big of a group after that day.
Next time I'm in NOLA, I'll definitely come back!
They had two specials: Roast Chicken and Pork Roast. We had the Pork Roast, mashed potatoes, and salad. Wonderful! They fixed the kids a PB&J, tuna fish sandwich, and mac-n-cheese. No complaints were heard! Very sweet folks working the counter!
We had the nicest catering from Louisiana Products for our FSU Alumni Reception last year. The ladies and staff are so welcoming and generous with their time and food. Thanks!!!
Step back into time for old time well prepared comfort food. Never dissapointing. Catfish every Friday! The most reasonable prices for miles
This is the real deal Nawlins lunch spot that the Hollywood set decorators could never envision not recreate. Delightful old school owners and employees and DELICIOUS lunch boxes. Sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Keep it a secret.
This Deli was recommended to me by some people I work with. Not only does this place serve great food but the character of the place is wonderful!!
Amazing place to grab some lunch. Monday red bean lunchtime deal is a must!
Food is great. Daily specials that bring you to the true New Orleans.
