Me and the family had a blast here. The service was A+ service. Haven't been made to feel at home like this at a restaurant in quite awhile. Turning to the food, it was all incredible. Clam pizza was good, not great but it met my expectations. The mushroom spinach pizza and meatball pizzas were delicious as well. Fell in love with the mushroom pie though. Overall, it was incredible!!
I finally made my way to Pepe's in New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday, June 12 2022. I should be ashamed after living there for four years, returning multiple times for reunions and passing through New Haven multiple times during the past forty years. I have been to the main competition but only once many, many years ago.
We arrived just after noon and there was a line outside. The wait was only about 15 to 20 minutes. Of course the place was full. The seating is mostly booths for four people. The three of us were seated in a booth and the waitress came right away. The orders included a white clam pizza, a sausage, pepperoni and mushroom pizza and a white spinach and mushroom pizza.
Pepe's uses a coal-fired oven and the crust is thin so the crust is crispy. There is more than adequate toppings including garlic. There are salads and other entrees but we were there for pizza and it did not disappoint. I am not sure if it is the best pizza that I have had but it was very, very good and I would eat it again without hesitation. I love pizza from coal-fired ovens and Pepe's does a great job.
The waitress was attentive and it was the typical New Haven pizza restaurant atmosphere. Prices were reasonable. Though not sure if it was the best pizza that I have ever eaten, and I have eaten A LOT of pizza in my life, overall I have to give Pepe's five stars, and I am not one to give out five stars easily.
We couldn’t pass through New Haven without taking advantage of our opportunity to FINALLY try Frank Pepe. There was a small line (Sunday around 3pm) but it moved pretty quickly and was well worth the wait. You could tell this place is busy most of the time and they definitely have their routines down, making sure to get people in and out without making anyone feel rushed. The menus and pizza toppings are already at each table which I definitely appreciated. We shared three small pizzas - the clam pie, a plain pie, and a meatball & ricotta pie. We were ravenous by the time our food arrived and absolutely enjoyed each and every bite. I felt like once we actually gave the food a few minutes to cool down, we could really enjoy the flavors and had to stop ourselves from eating EVERY slice before continuing our road trip back to Jersey. Worth the hype!
The White Clam pizza and a Margherita pizza both tasted excellent. Perfectly seasoned, fresh tasting but also very mature flavors. But, I expected perfection from the best rated pizza and it wasn't my favorite dough. In my opinion, it was too chewy, and the crust was too though almost inedible. Almost perfect pizza but I've had better dough in half a dozen places in NYC. 5 stars for sauces, 3 for dough.
Legendary pizza spot. Line looks long but it moves fast. Frank Pepe and Sally’s are the two most visit place in New Haven. Top notch quality pizza. We ordered White Clam and Classic Tomato and Cheese pizza and both came out delicious. Waited about 30 mins on Saturday night. Highly recommended!
Well worth the wait. The pizza is thin and has some flop but two or 3 people could easily eat a whole pizza. Service could be nicer but they’re so busy you gotta cut them some slack. Get the old time soda while you’re eating there.
