Wow… We have had a really wonderful time, since the beginning to the end, the menu is excellent. They pay a lot of attention to details and the quality of their ingredients. Their sushi is one of a kind, with great signature plates. I don't much Asian rice, but UMAI rice is delicious. Over all it was a great experience, in this small great place.
.
Thanks Chef for the amazing Sophia’s birthday memories!!!
Been eating Sushi along Time . You can tell by my profile . I’ve been to plenty of paces all around the country. The Sushi chef Ray is second to none . His food is exquisite. Take a look at the pics .
We went last night & had a few rolls for dinner , all were excellent! Highly recommend.
My friend told me that this place is the last place that she wants to eat before she dies.
I was here with my wife on the late night of a typical Wednesday. No one was there because we arrived almost at 9 pm but they greeted us nicely. All the waitstaff and sushi man was very friendly and welcoming even though we were late.
We had $65 omakase. It is most we spent on sushi but we didn’t doubt the quality of the dishes. The head chef aka owner gave us tons of foods. I never felt more full in a Japanese restaurant just eating sushi and sashimi.
From start to end, we were amazed by how fresh and tasty all the foods were. My wife was wowing every time she had a bite. The owner explained and educated us nicely about the fishes and how he prepared it. Listening to his short life story was very entertaining as well.
Overall, it was one of the best experiences we had. We are from NYC and we travel a lot to eat in great restaurants. This place is must go place if you are a sushi-sashimi lover but know that it is not cheap as your everyday Japanese restaurant.
I definitely will come back to try different dishes.
Highly recommended. Thank you, chef and other staff, to give us a memorable experience!
Cute little place but OOOH so delicious !! We went early.... Good thing, it got mega crowded by 7pm !! Our server Justin was very helpful in explaining some differences. We got a nice selection of Maki rolls and they were all delicious. The "specials" board has some very interesting selections. Will definitely go back and partake in some of the Ala carte sashimi selections. Oh... Not good with chop sticks ? Ask your server for the teaching ones !! Such fun !!
Great food, fresh sushi, and service is always great. I recommend always having reservations for this place as it is almost always busy and seating is at a premium.
The best sushi bar in this area. Very friendly staff. If you’re at the bar, they’ll talk to you as they work. The Restaurant atmosphere is like a favorite yet-undiscovered local treasure.
Pay attention to the artful presentation that Chef Ray puts into his food. I ordered Blue Shrimp, and when it arrived, the juicy body was carefully arched over a perfectly formed *cylinder* of sushi rice.
If you order Nigiri Sushi, there is more fish than rice (as opposed to other places which serve a large lump of rice with a veneer of fish on top).
Besides having the best sushi in the area, Umai has a friendly relaxed atmosphere. Other restaurants in the area are dressier affairs, but Umai is like wearing your favorite pair of jeans.
Also it's a BYOB. When I've been there, patrons will share their beverages with others at the bar, and the chefs will often accept an offered drink. As I said, friendly and relaxed.
They also do a brisk take-out business.
Be good to yourself, and GO.
