Review Olympic Cafe - Kapaa

If you're looking for a breakfast spot on Kauai, I definitely recommend this spot. You can expect great views, attentive service, good food, and very large portions. The french toast was especially delicious! We look forward to trying it again for lunch.

Had lunch here and the ahi furikake was amazing. Wife had the pork platter. Pork was solid as to be expected. Wait staff Courtney was super attentive and the open air dining over the shopping area was very breezy and nice. Beware the mixed drink prices is only caution I would give as depending on well vs primo they can stack up quick.

Beautiful views; open air restaurant. Price is moderate on this island with great food quality and quantity. Very friendly staff; my wife and I ate here twice in our 1-week stay. Good parking around back, which is an island rarity. Upstairs, no elevator. (Ask for the downstairs “restroom code”.)

Came here twice for breakfast and it was absolutely delicious! Got the pig omelet and banana and macadamia nut pancakes the first time and the pig breakfast burrito and kimchi fried rice the second. Such fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection. Huge portions so come hungry. And the service was fast. The pig was best I’ve ever had. So moist and flavorful. 10 out of 10! So good!

Really enjoyable lunch stop on our drive thru Kapaa. Food served quickly, and very tasty... especially the fish n chips. They were extremely good, as described by our UK friends who were with us Took a bit of time to get the cheque... but hey we were on vacation, so chill a bit, right ?

We stopped in for lunch after walking around and it was a nice surprise. The restaurant is on the second floor with pretty cool views. We had the fish tacos which were excellent. Amelia our server was helpful with our questions about the menu and our food came pretty quickly.
Vinny Tangy
Food was good, but fairly average. It’s on the second floor, so you get a good view of the town. It’s not Greece, so don’t expect the hummus to be good. But we only got that because they didn’t have any guacamole at noon? The loco moco there was pretty good, only gripe was that it was more undercooked than usual. Drinks were okay. Would have got a beer but they were in the middle of switching out the kegs the whole time were were there.
Kyle Graham
Overall quality of the food is great. The portions were generous and satisfying. I particularly enjoyed the kalua pig - it was delicious! However, the Mexican-style dishes, such as the burritos and chips and salsa were seriously lacking.

READ WARNING: they’re named Olympic for their giant portions. If you want to eat for an entire day or feed a family of 8 with one order of the burrito then this is the place. Honestly…. So mad I got no warning of how large this thing is. A great reflection of the sleeping giant mountain you can see from your table as you try to devour its equivalent. You’ll sit in shame as you eat your fill and there is barely a dent made in the monstrous plate. Do not take on this challenge unless you’re ready to accept defeat in the gladiator ring.
Bryan Pirul
We had breakfast at this place and it was delicious! You could see the ocean from our table and on the other side of the restaurant you can sit on high tables and view the town below
Tool Man
OMG !!! The food here is way better than expected for such a busy tourist area, and the open air balcony was an unexpected, unique treat, giving diners a wonderful unencumbered view of the man on the mountain. The portions were very generous and the entrees are uniquely flavorful and delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant. You have to try the Hawaiian French toast, with the Coconut Syrup… it’s amazing.

7 years ago we visited Kauai and my son remembered this restaurant because it made such a great grilled cheese sandwich, just the way he loved it. Unfortunately they no longer have it on the menu, but the waitress knew what I was talking about and the kitchen made it special the way they used to make it, and my son was happy. They have an awesome bloody Mary with all the fixings you could imagine, and more. I really enjoyed it. My daughter also remembered the Kalua Pork from this place, apparently it made an impression so many years ago. We came back again for breakfast on the day we were heading for our flight home, they have a very good breakfast menu with Hawaiian bread french toast or macadamia nut pancakes, plus plenty of other breakfast choices. The waitress was very friendly and happy to meet our special requests. I definitely recommend this place when visiting kawaii.

Fun local place for good bar food. It's a second story open air bar and grill, so good people watching of the shopping area at street level. The pig sandwich was very good, although the bun is not up to the task. None of the mandatory tip garbage here,
Brad Singer
This a solid breakfast spot. Big portions, and very flavorful food.
Douglas McKenzie
Hands down best Bloody Mary's we found on the island! The Bloody Mary is a meal in itself. It is garnished with the standard celery stick and green olives but what makes this Mary outstanding is the sice of carrot, roasted garlic, cheddar cheese chunk, red onion, two shrimp and hard boiled egg pickled in a balsamic vinegar brine. Food was good too.
Kelly Hughes
Absolutely delicious every time! Huge portions and everything is so fresh. The staff is great!

My wife and I come to the Olympic whenever we are on Kauai.  They have a large selection on their menu.  Something for everyone.  Their portions are huge.  Great breakfasts with coffees and teas.  Huge lunches and drink items.  The salad selection is good.  Need more dressing, just ask.  Can't beat the dinner selections.  We love their fish & chips and ribs.  Super meaty and great BBQ sauce for the ribs.  OK, now I'm hungry again.  I'm heading up to the Olympic for another great dinner.
Bruhfoodislife
The waiters are really friendly and helpful. Great food too, and the price ain't high for the amount of food in the dish. Definitely recommend this place if you are in Kauai island:)
Chris
This place had a great open air dining area. If your looking for huge portions of greasy diner food this is the place for you. If not try somewhere else.
Tom Seaby
Probably one of my favourite places in all of Hawaii. The food was amazing, staff were friendly and the atmosphere and location were awesome.
Pete Bogdan
Drinks were warm (they weren't supposed to be!). Fruit wasn't ripe. Was here 3 years ago, and didn't remember it fondly, not sure why we came back. Won't again.
Carol
Food was good but not great. Husband had the Hawaiian pork I had fish & chips. Pork was good. Place would be so much better if they used fresh cut potatoes instead of frozen waffle fries. Great location
William
I can make better at home. My "well done" burger was raw in the middle. My wife's sandwich was soaked in grease from the grill. The coleslaw was bland as could be. Mayonnaise and cabbage.<br/>This is a 70-80's loud music, beer and snacks bar. <br/>Only positive was we were starved and at least had motivation to dive in.<br/>Would not return soon.<br/>To be expected, the place had a well-earned 77.
Kendra
Dry chicken and fish. No mayo or sauce on chicken sandwich. Nice atmosphere at least, nice waitstaff.
Emily
This cafe is awesome! Great waitresses, yummy mimosas and the kalua pig breakfast burrito is sooo good and enough for 2! We would highly reccomend this for breakfast!
D
I enjoy fish tacos. These were tasteless except for some overdone spices added to mask the bland fish chunks. The view of town was better than the food.
M
Just Okay. Other options probably better.

Horrible. Right away the first thing i noticed as i walked into the place is the smell, it had the aroma of a recycle bin that hasent been taken out yet. I imediantly checked around where i was seated to see if it was clean. None of the fixtures or windows looked like they have been cleaned in along time. On top of this bad first impression the service was beyond terrible. Empolyees were constantly having a tea party in the back corner, as well as walking around alot doing nothing. I had a hard figureing out what anyones job was. I dont even think they have a boss! Even though we were one of 3 customers in the place they still managed to screw up my simple order and i had to wait why my party ate without me. None of this food is fresh either, clearly storebought with the absurd size of menu. NEVER GO HERE.
Rob Rech
The food was great and the service was very friendly. I'm very pleased with the price and the amount of food given. Great place and I would highly recommend

Service slow- gave our table away. Pastrami sandwich was bland- offered no condiments; asked for mustard, they brought French's. No IPA beer available.
Chelsea Anne Menchise
Kalua burrito and the breakfast is a waist of time and money. Never have a good food experience. I just go for drinks. My kalua burrito had a bone in it and the cheese wasn't even melted.. I gave the rest of the burrito to my boyfriend after 2 bites. The waitresses are nice but the food sucks
Nicole Mandese Wolski
Good food and drinks. My husband and I had mai tais here along with happy hour coconut shrimp (a great deal at $5 a plate and you got 8 of them). On another day I got a salad that was okay - not bad but not excellent. My husband got a fish sandwhich with fries and that was very tasty. Overall I would reccommend.
Tonia
We just went there for drinks but it has food too!! Royal margarita was really good and at a good price! It's a second store bar which makes this place cool!
Chad Anderson
They didn't serve us. Cant tell if the food or drink was good or bad; after being seated we waited 10 minutes or so and no one bothered to help us. The place wasn't busy (probably 3pm) and there were two girls waiting on tables. I guess they didn't want our money.
Spider Legs
Big menu, fun location, good food and great service. One of our best meals on the island.
Rindee
Cool patio. Didnt like the food. I had the ahi wrap and it was a giant sushi roll in a tortilla. Avocado was brown on my husbands quesadilla. Yuck. Only place in kauai we didnt like the food.
Ashley Foster
Great open air bar for a drink. The food portions are enormous (from what we saw because we only drank) and the drinks are good.
Monique Coderre Regier
Good but nothing special. Ate here twice.. Huge menu and huge portions!! Waffle fries were perfectly season and nicely crispy but other than that the food was nothing special. Good open air atmosphere. If you go Sunday they have a make your own Bloody Mary station set up which is a neat idea.
Dani Gunderson
Yummy scrabbles for breakfast. He had chorizo & i had spinach. Spinach had- 3eggs, artichokes, peppers, and onions! Get to choose a side, rice, melon or potatoes! Very filling
Brent
Out of all the restaurants I eat at throughout the country. This is number one as the worst ever. You don't know me, but if you did you would thank me m
Stephen Gagliardi
Great view, food is ok.
Weeks
Great food! We've been on Kauai 10 days and this place was the best. Finally some good food!
Sam Theis
Food was okay nothing too special though. Prices weren't too bad but the service was not the best. Probably will pass on this place next time..

If you're looking for a delicious, healthy and hearty meal to fill you up, order the Chicken Curry Wrap or Thai Chicken Wrap with papaya on the side. Best bang for your buck. Enjoyed them both. Very complex and satisfying flavors came together in both wraps. Texture and level of sweetness in papaya was perfect.

Unprofessional manager. We were there last night for dinner, place is nice enough and seems like a fun place. We really liked our waitress too, she was funny and very nice . So the evening started pretty good, however when we got our food it was another story. Mine was actually pretty tasty , I had the surf and turf special. But my friend ordered the ONO fish and it came out of the kitchen as tough as a brick! We were asked how our food was and my friend told them about the fish been way too over cooked. The waitress noted that it looked over cooked and said she would tell the kitchen to make another piece, but she never came back to tell us if they were going to or not, And she was gone for about 20 minutes ,so my friend continued eating his vegetables and mashed potatoes while we were waiting , apparently , the waitress didn't tell the manager about the problem till the end of our meal. He came over and we told him what the problem was, he asked if my friend would like another piece of fish , of course the reply was no, as he was already filled with veggies and potatoes. So the manager said he would take off the piece of fish from the bill and charge us for the veggies and potatoes !!!! I have never heard of such thing!! I thought it was funny but actually very unprofessional on his part. I have managed a few restaurants myself and I thought that was a really poor way to handle it. That was our experience at this restaurant , of course we will never go back or recommend this place .the whole thing really ruined our otherwise nice evening. My advice is to the owners , you cater to tourists and you need to have the person that represents your establishment act professionally. For that this restaurant gets 2 stars rating and I am being generous.

Good for Appetizers and Drinks. Their coconut shrimp and wings appetizer were very good and $5 for happy hour. They had a couple decent craft beers on tap for 3.75 on happy hour. We weren't pleased with either of our meals. We heard others say they were. My wife had chicken stir fry and it didn't have much flavor and the chicken was a little tough. I had Ribeye and Shrimp with garlic mashed potatos. The shrimp and Steak both were extremely heavily seasoned with garlic. The shrimp were cooked right and great. The steak seemed to be cooked medium rare but it was tough. I only ate half of it. The garlic was so strong on the steak and shrimp, I couldn't even taste the garlic in mashed potatos but my wife could (she hadn't eaten steak or shrimp). We returned here again for beers and appetizers and was again pleased. The sauce on their coconut shrimp was more of a cajun flavored tarter like sauce, rather than the sweeter red sauce we were accustomed to, but it was very good. Their wings were not overcooked and juicy. The service was pretty good as well. I gave this a like it, but not for dinner. For drinks and a snack it was great.

We read the reviews and wanted to see if the food & service was any good. It was a busy Friday, we arrived around 6:00pm. Ordered a Mai Tai( sweet, not much booze) and a beer. Mom ordered a cheeseburger ( was ok). The Cole slaw had no flavor/sauce. I had the taco bar...free on Fridays. I thought I'd give it a whirl....was ok. Could be improved with flavor. It's in a great location. Too bad it's just another tourist trap.

Did not like it. Very greasy...... typical bar food. The smell of the place was nasty.

Very Unfriendly. My wife, daughter, and I had an amazing time on Kauai. We stayed at the Hyatt in Poipu, which was way beyond our expecations. On our way back from Hanalei Bay one day we stopped at the Olympic Cafe in Kapaa for a quick snack. My seven year old daughter had a small shave ice with her. The hostess told us we could choose a table so we sat at a table with a nice view of the city. <br/><br/>After a few minutes our waitress came over and without saying anything else she took our menus from us and told us we had to leave due to the fact that my daughter had brought in a shave ice. She was almost done with it and we would have been happy to have thrown it away. She had not made a mess at all. We were shocked. The waitress was very rude and we did not know what to say. We walked out of the restaurant feeling as though we had done something terribly wrong. We got the feeling that it was really our waitress, not the restaurant, but the feeling was beyond description. <br/><br/>We walked across the street to Big Wave Dave's and were treated like royalty. We asked if our daughter could bring in her shave ice and the friendly host said "of course."<br/><br/>For the rest of our vacation we went to different beaches around the island and then went to a restaurant for an afternoon snack and drink. Each time we got our daughter a shave ice and brought it into the restaurants; however, we made sure to ask if it was okay for her to bring it in. Every time the restaurant staff laughed and stated "of course it's okay." <br/><br/>I strongly recommend every restaurant on Kauai except the Olympic Cafe. If staff from the Olympic Cafe read this review they should realize how confusing that experience was for our daughter. Please also realize that just about everyone loves to visit Hawaii, but not everyone wants to live there--so please do not worry about everyone suddenly moving there, which may have been the cause of the rude and horrible attitude of our waitress at the Olympic Cafe.

Huge variety on menu. Cheapest beer im town.
David B
Went here twice while on vacation. First night we just had beer and the free taco bar. It was great and cheap, but we wanted to come back again to try a menu item. All of us ordered the fish and chips and they were amazing! Would love to come back if we visit again

The place to return to.... Second time to Olympic cafe & as always the food is YUMMY! Great variety, great price, usually great service (although our waitress last time could have been replaced by the OTHER waitress who seemed to have more time for us; sorry I can't remember the names!), & of course an easy location to find. Recommend the Ono Beer Batter Fish & Chips & the Grilled Spinach Sandwich. Mmmm... Onolicious :)

LOVED Breakfast. We were so impressed with breakfast that we ate there twice. It has a great patio overlooking the town. I highly recommend the Acapulco omelet. They also have mimosas, if you like them, and really large coffees so they aren't constantly filling them up. Thumbs up!

Great Local restaurant. Took the family of 20 people (to include 3 year old triplets) and had great service for lunch. Most ordered the Mahi Tacos and Fish Burritos. All was great. If you don't like spicy fish and are more of a fan of mango salsa type fish tacos then this is a great place.
Ron Dorst
One of our Favorites. Nice atmosphere with dinning tables overlooking the highway. Good sandwiches with large portions

Rude, Unhelpful, Incorrigible. Let me start with saying that the waitress was very sweet and accomodating. I am allergic to gluten and she took my order with corn tortillas instead of wheat. Somewhere the order went wrong and as someone who was either the manager or owner stopped by to see how things were as our food was delivered I brought up the minor mishap. He forcefully sighed at my request for a correction and rolled his eyes as he walked away. He transfered the food from wheat to corn tortillas and dropped it back on the table a moment later. I told him I am sorry for being difficult, but my reaction would still trigger from the wheat leftover in the transfer to which he made his annoyance with me as visibly known as possible. The peacemaker in me offered to pick another item if it was easier. At which time he let out an angry huff, picked up the plate with one last eye roll and stomped away to the kitchen sending a waitress over with a menu and noticably avoided acknowledging our table the rest of the evening. If you have any special accomodations or would prefer not to be treated poorly by management I would recommend avoiding Olympic all together.
Canuck
Really good experience. We had never heard of Kapaa or Olympic Cafe before, so we went in based on the open views from the second floor dining area-it looked cool. I had a HUGE Cobb salad, with avocado, tons of bacon and egg and an excellent cilantro lime dressing. YUM but way too big to finish. My husband had a spicy Thai wrap that was also big and very good. The service was good, the views were fun. I would definitely go back.
Sam
US you let me down. After the glowing reviews on Urbanspoon, we decided to check this out. They've definitely hit gold with the layout of the restaurant being on an open floor on the 2nd level perched above the street. Really nice. The service so far was quick and efficient. I ordered the California Nore thingy based on a couple of reviews here. Wife had fish tacos. This was the LAST time we saw our server.<br/><br/>Food came pretty quick. Wife said her tacos were good. My thing however was a mess. It looked like a 5" diameter burrito packed with white rice! I'll tell ya there must have been at least 3 cups of rice in this thing. A few slivers of cucumber, a few chunks of some kind of tasteless colorless food thing and that was it. It was really pretty nasty. I basically unwrapped the thing, ate the slivers of cucumber and that was it. How could anyone recommend this thing... twice?! I'm puzzled.<br/><br/>After we finished, we went into the check waiting game. This is a familiar game we've seen many times before. You finish the meal and sit... and wait... and wait,... and wait. Your waitress is gone not to be seen again. I honestly wanted to skip out on the bill. I had just spent $14 on a tortilla filled with rice. I put my credit card on the table... nothing. Finally we walked to the bar and said we were ready to leave and wanted to pay our bill.<br/><br/>So in a nutshell, great location, horrible food, horrible service. US said it was the 6th best in Kapaa with an 80% rating! Hard to believe the ballot isn't being stuffed here. When I got home, I looked it up on Yelp. 3.5 stars with many people dishing out 1 stars and some similar stories like mine including a worm in the food.
Greg Jackson
Great portions, great service, great 2nd floor location. This is going to be one of our "have to visit places" in Kauai. Very laid back, unpretensious and relaxing.
Tom On Kauai
One of my Favorites on KAUAI. I love the Olympic<br/>The staff is always pleasant and the food and drinks are very good<br/>huge portions and great prices<br/><br/>Love their Sizzling chicken fajitas<br/>Awesome !!
Michele
Great Salads! Prices are fair,Service is OK. We love the Tropical Salad with chicken. Plenty to eat and if you aren't that hungry get the dressing on the side and safe half for the next day. Also their thin spaghetti with pine nuts and tomatoes is really good I get extra marinara sauce on the side and safe a portion for lunch the next day. Alcoholic drinks are average at best mai tai's we had were way to juicey not enough dark rum too much pineapple juice...Stick to the beer can 't go wrong
RaynRuss
Awsome. We had the Ono with a Macadamia nut/Papaya reduction. As good as or better than anything we've had on the Islands. Yum! And very large portions (too large really). Did I mention our salad was organic?
Janet
Casual dinning, good prices. I had the largest burrito I have ever seen. Busy place, fun to watch the town go by on 2nd lever dinning.
Popeye
2nd floor outside dining. Good foor, breakfast, lunch, dinner, nothing fancy but good. Great view 360 all around, fun spot.
Chance Potter
I agree with the reviews that say they have HUGE portions! Upstairs offers great views is Kapaa and is very open.
Rich Maxey
Warning the burritos are monsters!!! Very good!
Michael Vanderkarr
Have to agree about big portions. California omlette had 1/2 of a HUGE avocado on it! Service was friendly and attentive, and the location is great, upstairs in central Kapa'a across from the ABC store. Friday AM breakfast was very empty, customer-wise.
Christopher Rossiter
Huge portions! Excellent service. Great location.
Kyle Matthews
Great variety of food. They have everything from burritos to ribs to salmon. The burgers are great, as is the tropical salad and waffle fries. Kitchen was a little slow but our waitress apologized and gave us two free drinks. All in all a very good experience. Good food, good service and good views.
Elizabeth Wholihan
Have been here a few times. Service is hit or miss. Tropical salad is very good. Kailua pig quesadilla was a favorite in the past but was just okay this time.
Ken
The food was ok at best. Our waitress was fine but the overall service was not good. The staff acted like we were invisible and they had never seen a black couple before. One waitress offered water and checked on every table around us without making any eye contact with us. The person that brought our silverware did not say a word to us. I have to assume that the only reason our waitress spoke to us is because nobody else would. She said she was the bartender.
Kaikea
It Was Decent. There was some nice food and some crappy food but the waiting service was great. I'll give it a 7
Josh Turansky
Best on the East side of the island by far. Huge menu... Which is rare in Kauai. Good size portions. Good price. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will be pleased
FTW
Decent food, nice joint. Food was pretty good, excellent bloody mary, open and airy, with a nice view with good service. It would have been a very good experience except two of us had dirty silverware with old schmutz on it. Yuck.
