It's a very peaceful and chill sushi house. The seating is unique as well as the atmosphere, and the service personnel are always patient and accommodating. The food is always delicious, I usually go for the Sunday morning specialty sushi, but I recently ordered the bulgogi, and it was so yummy!

My husband and I ordered several rolls of sushi for take-out. We were disappointed by the size of the rolls compared with how much we paid ($40). We classed it up at home using some of our own fun dishes.
We might try one of their soups sometime while dining in—my husband saw a couple eating soup at a table while he was waiting for our food; the quality and amount looked much better for the price. Not satisfied with our experience here yet, but I will update the review if we try it again and enjoy a better experience.

Good sushi good price. We got the lunch special to go. Next time I'll try something different. I look forward to trying it again. My daughters love sushi and this sushi wasn't fancy like they like but it was good and they enjoyed it.

Very delicious sushi at a great price! Happy hour every day 4-6 with awesome specials. Fish is fresh and orders are made quickly. My 11yr old loves the California roll and I ordered the Tuna plate which had a Boston roll, Spicy tuna and 2 tuna pieces. Have been here a few times now and will definitely return for the good food!

Affordable sushi with a nice atmosphere! Their miso soup was light and tasty. I highly recommend the Veggie Fantasy roll: soy paper with cucumber, avocado, lettuce, carrot, and a few more veggies, topped with spicy chili sauce. A completely vegan and gluten free meal for just under $10. I also weirdly love their wooden chairs!

Lady up front was very nice and polite. Ramen and Chicken was delicious. My order was delivered in good time. Good restaurant for where it is located in the rough parts of KC. I will come back here with my girlfriend or family.

Wow the food here is amazing. It is a sushi restaurant with plenty of Japanese cuisine and drinks as well. They have nice happy hour specials ($1 off a sushi roll!) and a nice selection of drinks, including sake and beer both American and Japanese. The food is the best- order a bento box which gives you a little of everything! Parking is across the street off Wornall. They have a tv inside playing news or sports. Definitely worth checking out!

We come here a lot ever since moving to Waldo - takeout and dine in are both very consistent in quality. We’ve tried something different every time we go! Can’t go wrong with any of the sushi (nice, simple rolls with a lot of vegetarian options too) and the bento boxes are HUGE. We like the bulgogi and chicken teriyaki best. They’re a strong contender for the best crab rangoon in town and having a scoop of green tea ice cream or mochi after the meal rounds it out nicely! A great local experience.

Nice place! It's small and was quiet when I went which for me less crowded is always nice. The sushi is made to order and is done well. I certainly enjoyed the food and while it can be pricey, they have deals like their Bento boxes that make it more affordable. Not my Go-To sushi place but a good one nonetheless.

I get their food takeout here with my fiance sometimes. Great tasting food and decent service. In a great location. Would recommend ro any Asian food lovers in KC.

Quiet, great food, fast service. Come here if you want amazing food and a calm atmosphere!

Really cool place- small and cozy. Order at the counter and they bring it to you. Lots of flavor- I recommend the Hot Mamma and the ginger salad.

It was a fun place. Certainly worth a visit and a great vibe to hang out with a group.

Excellent little sushi and bento place. Has all the classics on the menu plus a few korean favorites, which were done well. Sushi tasted fresh and rice wasnt hard. Enjoyed the bulgogi and seaweed salad. Service was very fast!

I’ve been here a few times! They always have good service! Always fast! And the rolls are great!

I love going to Kokoro Maki! Especially for lunch. They have great lunch box specials that offer a couple pieces of sushi, salad, and teriyaki. I also really liked their vamped up ramen bowel.

The sushi is pretty good and reasonably priced. The restaurant itself feels very family friendly and family owned, but in a cozy way. Everyone that works there is nice and they try to thank each party as they leave, which is nice. We've been eating there for several years and always find its reliable for a good meal.

New Favoirte!. I have an asian food addiction and Kokoro Maki House has landed on my regular rotation.
I have been there twice so far and it was delicious both times. I have tried the Chicken Teriyaki and the Oyako Donburi. Haven't tried the sushi yet. What I have tried was hot, fresh, and flavorful.
I also like the semi-fast food style. Order at the counter and the food will be brought to your table. No waiting on wait staff or fussing over empty glasses. It's pretty low-key so this isn't the place to go if you're looking for something fancy.
The location is great for eating before going out on the town, being right down the road from the best bars in Waldo.

Spicy Pork!. This is one of my favorite lunch spots. The spicy pork is awesome!

Good Sushi for the money fresh ingredients and friendly service everytime.

So, so good. Beautifully prepared sushi in this little Waldo gem. Reasonably priced will keep us coming back for a long time. ps.... Best sushi in KC

Good sushi and it's made quick. loved the chicken teriyaki. juns Japanese has TERRIBLE chicken. this place is way better and $7.95 vs Juns $11 (horrible)

Decent... will be back, I'm sure.. This is a great spot for a decently quick lunch. Terribly disappointed in the ramen, it was... just... ramen, like from the packages. The Hot Mama roll was very tasty and at $8.95 a sushi bargain. I'm still intrigued with their Korean offerings. I'll be back to try the bim bim bap and kimchee.

Fantastic Sushi!. My friend from Maryland was in town and wanted to get some sushi. I found Kokoro Maki House here on Urbanspoon and thought we'd give it a try. We weren't sure exactly what to expect, but we were both very pleasantly surprised! The sushi was very fresh and very good quality. The restaurant itself is simple, but pleasant and clean. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The prices were excellent and we left full, satisfied, and ready to go back again soon!

Much cheaper than many sushi bars around and tastes just a GREAT!

This place is awesome, hands down. It tastes as good or better than some of.the ritzy, atmospheric places like Nara or Ra but doesn't break my wallet. Staff its very friendly as well. I left my purse there on a Saturday and since they are closed Sunday they held it for me until Monday.
Frank
Nice family owned restaurant serving Japanese / Korean fare. Atmosphere is humble but a nice alternative to night club vibe of Ra or sushi joints in Power & Light. I like this place for the selection, price and portions. Everything I've ordered has been quality. Staff is very friendly.

Really?! How are there so many good reviews about this place? This is not the best sushi in the area. For a place that is a hole in the wall, I would expect the food to make up for the lack of ambiance. While the food is not bad, its just not great. We went for a birthday dinner and were just disappointed that the reviews created a false expectation of how good the food is here. I'd rather make the trip to Ra in Leawood, KS, or the Drunkin Fish or Nara, both downtown. Last time I ever trust the reviews on urban!
Amanda
Great food!. Everything I've had at Kokoro Maki House is outstanding! The sushi is well-made and tastes fresh, the chicken fried rice is unique and has a great mix of summer vegetables in it, the Korean food is unique and spiced just right. Highly recommended!!
Jeremy
Great Fusion. Excellent food, Japanese dishes with a hint of Korean and American influence. The Oyakodonburi was great, although sweeter than typical. The Gyoza is uniquely breaded and fried, but tastes great. Excellent service and price point. Highly recommended.
Jackie Barth
Make sure that if you dont like wasabi, you ask to not get it on your 2 piece menu options. otherwise this was great!
Kerri
Excellent sushi and cheap! Loved the New York roll!

Best sushi I've had in Kansas City.

Kokoro Maki was DELICIOUS. By far the best Asian food family has had since moving to KC. They give side dishes with the meals and even have Cream Soda haha!

GREAT food, SUPER fast, VERY cheap. I've only lived in the KC area for about a year and a half. My first love was Kona, and is still great for the right occasion (Their lobster asparagus roll is one I go back to time and time again... and it's a great restaurant to please the palates of a dining group that includes both sushi/japanese lovers and those who are not very adventurous culinarily speaking).

My cousin soon forced me into trying RA, which became an obsession. And if I can make it to Happy Hour, the prices (ridiculously cheap), quality (thumbs up), and variety/uniqueness!!!! (nothing standard about their sauces, presentation, or roll combinations) at RA still reign supreme.

HOWEVER, this weekend my cousin and I found ourselves shopping ourselves beyond starvation in Nordstrom well past 7pm, and she insisted we could still get our sushi fix at this little place in Waldo called Kokoro Maki House.

I was extremely skeptical, but hungry enough to play along, and couldn't pass down the opportunity to try sushi that was affordable on ANY budget, and prepared at lightening speed. The next day, I can say that I couldn't have been more happily surprised, and that I will absolutely get take out from this place again.... and again.... and again.

We ordered the Hot Mama Roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, and spicy crab/sriracha mix on top -- SUPERB), the Philadelphia Roll (smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber -- standard roll, but wonderfully executed), the Spider Roll (soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, masago, with spicy sauce -- this roll is HUGE and delectable), the Asparagus Roll (8 pieces for $3!! and generously sized for one center ingredient) AND an order of Miso Soup... for UNDER TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS AFTER TAX.

Now, I'm a graduate student and my cousin is nearing her wedding, so a nice, big, fast, delicious dinner out for the both of us for under $25 total is great no matter what. But take into consideration that not only do the prices please, the quantity is very generous. Every roll is at least 8 pieces, and many of the rolls have bigger than average-size pieces - even the vegetarian ones.

AND, not only did we get 32 pieces of sushi and miso soup for under 25$ total, we got two extra orders of both wasabi and ginger for free..... and it was less than 10 minutes (on a Saturday night) from when we placed our order to when we were back in the car heading home.

Personal details that won extra bonus points with me were that they offered the asparagus roll on their vegetarian roll menu, as it is a favorite sushi ingredient of mine; that nothing on the vegetarian roll menu was even $4 (you could order the cucumber, avocado, asparagus and carrot roll for the same price as my asparagus roll); the miso soup was only $1.50 (about half the price of anywhere else) -- and included lots of large, high quality cubes of tofu and perfectly cooked, large, tender but not mushy pieces of wakame seaweed, as well as scallions; and finally, that there was enough left over (and we were both completely stuffed) for both of us to eat lunch the next day.

I'm just really not sure what more anyone could ask for when it comes to Japanese and/or Korean cuisine on a budget, and/ or looking for a quick meal that tastes amazing and doesn't skimp on anything -- this take-out blows ANY grocery store sushi out of the water in terms of both price and quality -- by a long shot -- and yet by opting for this place for it's value and speed, you do not sacrifice variety (they have PLENTY to choose from on standard, special, house, and vegetarian rolls, entrees, desserts, as well as appetizers and a Korean menu that looks pretty tempting).

This is a must-try for any sushi lover in the KC area near state line -- on either side of the border. I live in KC, MO; my cousin in KC (Prairie Village), KS.... we will both be frequent, loyal customers & happy ones at that.

Great value. Sushi is priced well, and the other dishes I have tried have been pretty good. I like this place.
Natasha
Very spicy tuna roll. Not bad for $.
Kryssy
Delicious! We ordered the spring rolls, spicy mama roll, and spicy salmon roll. Everything was so good and cheap! $23 for everything. If you're a sushi lover, you should try it.

The best sushi spot in the metro. Hands down this is the best sushi spot in the greater kansas city metropolitan area, either side of state line. I moved from Los Angeles a few years back, so I am familiar with quality sushi and this place has it. The fish and the preparation is wonderful and the customer service is fabulous. The price is so affordable and the owners/chef of this spot are so accomodating and friendly, it's like you're going home to eat, if you're lucky enough to have parents that like you and are incredible sushi chefs. Not one negative thing to say-go there and enjoy!!!!!!

Fresh fish. I followed the previous reviews to this great spot. The fish was so fresh. It had the melt in your mouth taste that you find with the fresh fish near the ocean. I highly recommend this spot!

Great sushi and at a decent price. Everything was amazing, highly recommended.
Anna Copeland
My favorite sushi in Kansas city. The price is right and they have a fair variety. I haven't tried anything there that I didn't like.
LJ
Great food, great price.. Kokoro may not look like much, but the food is high quality and the prices are very modest. This place compares very well with the higher end Sushi restaurants around. Everything was delicious, and the seafood was very fresh. As an extra bit, they have a small Korean menu in addition to classic sushi rolls.

High Quality Food. The food is high quality, that is what counts. But wait, it is reasonably priced too. There are a lot of Asian restaurants, but few are worth recommending. This one is worth it!

Excellent Food. When you walk in, you think "oh oh, is this really a place I trust with sushi?" But the sushi is every bit as good as the fanciest sushi houses and the variety of other food on the menu (not just Japanese) makes for a nice change. I highly recommend the udon soup - I spent time in Japan and it's very authentic. And the best part? They're FAST. I don't even have to call it in, I just drop in, place my order, and I'm outta there in 10 minutes.

LOVED IT!. I had the california rolls. It was the best ever!
Anna Weimer
Yum!!. Not much on atmosphere but the sushi is wonderful. I would recommend the Sunday roll, sex and the city, the spicy tuna, And the kokoro maki roll. All equally fab! The sushi is made fresh and is not bland and is savory which I think is important. Very reasonably priced and the staff were friendly.

Kokoro - Cheap, quality, and great atmosphere!. Kokoro Maki House is my favorite sushi place in KC. First of all, it is cheap. An 8-piece sushi roll is anywhere from $5-7.50 and a $1-2 for a nigiri piece. The sushi is great, my favorites are the Spicy Salmon and the New York Roll, which has oddly has apple in it, but is so good. While a little rough on the outside, from the moment you step inside the restaurant, the environment is amazing! The staff are very courteous even though they do not speak English very clearly.

Great resonably priced Sushi!. We've been eating at Kokoro for the last few years and have never had a bad experience. Everything has always been fresh and very tasty!. Highly recommend the Sunday Morning roll (would no doubt be a few $$ more expensive somewhere else), New York roll (like a Philly but with apple) and the Yum Yum roll. Nigiri has always been very good as well and VERY reasonably priced. Only drawback at all is dealing w/ parking around there for takeout, and an occasional wait (generally only 1 person making most of the rolls) but we, as well as everyone we've introduced it to, find it's well worth the wait. We have been to pretty much every other sushi place in town and this is the one we choose for take-out 95% of the time.

Good lunch specials. Checked out Kokoro during lunch a few weeks ago. some great specials on sushi rolls during the lunch hour, and I thought the sushi was very good. they're location isn't the best, so I hope they can stay open.

I love counter service lunch spots. They are almost universally faster than full service restaurants, they tend to be more informal, and the food can still be excellent. But let me begin by stating what I think should be a self evident truth: Ordering sus
