Review Le Fou Frog - Kansas City

Bryan Whitehead
I’m one of those people who likes to carefully examine menus online and pick out what I plan to order when I get to a restaurant. And every time I do that with Le Fou Frog, I find myself lured away by one of the specials on the chalkboard. As all the food here is expertly prepared and thoroughly delicious, deviating from my plans has never been a mistake. They do a particularly good job with seafood. On my most recent visit I had scallops and gnocchi that were excellent. The drinks here are also quite good. I admit I’m not completely crazy about the quirky French cafe atmosphere. But I recognize that’s a matter of personal taste, and I’m sure a lot of their customers really love it. And the lighting makes it hard to get good photos of the food, as you can tell from the pictures accompanying this review. But that’s completely beside the point when the food is this good.

First visit, but not our last! It's quaint & relaxing. The servers are very welcoming and professional in an easy-going way. Best of all... the FOOD IS AMAZING! We had the smoked duck salad with raspberry vinaigrette and smoked trout with toast points for appetizers. Entrees were rosemary seasoned lamb chops with polenta and seasonal vegetables, as well as tiger shrimp with a (to die for) champagne vanilla sauce and risotto. Don't forget to try the desserts. All dishes were prepared to perfection and just simply scrumptious!

In the dark rouge colored dining room, you are surrounded by an eclectic ambiance that is both romantic and whimsical at once – a dichotomy of sensations fit for date night. The entrance is endearing, unpretentious, and inviting. We arrived early and had cocktails by the bar, enjoying some recommendations from the owner and learning more about the city’s attractions. When we were sat at our table, one is instantly cradled into the experience that is Le Fou Frog. We were presented with a menu that had enumerable amounts of food – my only regret being that I had but one stomach to fill. The specials were presented via chalk board, our eyes fixated on a couple of the recommended dishes. I will, to the best of my ability, try to describe this union of nirvana and culinary ecstasy; however, I know my words will not do it justice. Escargot: Glistening in the porcelain tarn, the snail shells bathed in a rich, buttery concoction. The pungent aroma of garlic, herbs, and butter wafted around the table enticing every sense of the human body. We made quick work of the dish, using our freshly baked bread to collect as much of the remaining sauce from the tarn as was possible. To describe this as catastrophically delicious is an understatement, it is life changing. Duck Confit: Duck is such a funny beast to cook, it is tricky with its fat and meat. The fattiness is both its strength and weakness; however, with careful handling and gifted hands it is to be placed among the highest realms of culinary mastery. The dish was absolutely insatiable, every crispy bite is a holy union of flavors and the fat – exquisite doesn’t come close to describing the dish. I highly recommend it, it will not disappoint CAILLE FARCI (Quail Stuffed with Foie Gras and Brioche): I remember having this years ago, it was as mesmerizing then as it was this evening. The quails, 2 total, were perfectly cooked and deboned, save the legs. The inside of the birds were filled with foie gras and brioche – perhaps the richest, most flavorful substance that has ever passed the barrier of my teeth into my stomach. Each bite was riveting, like listening to your favorite song – it never grows old. The dish was served on buttery mash potatoes, topped with perigourdine sauce. There is a hint of truffle and wine in the sauce, a true symphony of flavor. This is both a nostalgic dish for me, being the first one I tried here, but also an all time favorite. All in all, this is probably one of my all time favorite restaurants and I can’t wait to return. I would describe eating here as – utterly exquisite.

Incredible experience! The ambiance was perfect for an intimate dinner. The staff all work as a team- they excel at ensuring every guest has the right amount of attention needed. We even got to hear a performance from a talented server! The menu is well-developed and explained in detail. We couldn't be more pleased with our first experience and look forward to coming again when we are back in town. Thank you for taking this industry seriously with passion and attention to the small details!

A unique, romantic dining experience in one of K.C.'s oldest restaurants. It never disappoints. The menu is not typical, with a variety of offers not seen with other high-end restaurants. It's pricey but definitely something special. The chocolate martini is outstanding! A dining delight!

First of all, I enjoy French food. I was told that I was missing a local restaurant gem called La Fou Frog. I made reservations for myself and was seated at the bar table, which was perfect. It felt like I was in Paris, observing people. I had the chance to meet one of the owners, Barbara, and enjoyed conversing with her. I asked Barbara to surprise me with her favorite dessert, and she delighted me with creme brulee and Nie port. It was amazing! I loved the ambiance of the restaurant, the service was spectacular, and the food was breathtaking!

We had a perfect meal for our honeymoon here. It was worth every dollar and our server, Ava, was incredibly friendly and sweet. She was knowledgeable and helped us pick between options when we got stuck. Everything we got was rich with flavors and perfectly seasoned. The entire restaurant was decorated for the holiday season, and the walls were covered in photos. We will be going back!

I was looking for a unique restaurant to take my daughter to celebrate her 18th birthday. I just HAPPENED to find Le Fou Frog and I am SOOOO glad I did! The whole experience was perfection. The food, the service, the ambiance... it was just perfect. I can't wait to go back on my next visit to Kansas City!! (The pommes frites!! Get them. 😍🤤)

Bread was soft inside with a crunchy outside, salad had a citrus dijon vinaigrette, escargot was delicious baked in tomato garlic and herbs, bay scallops baked with leeks, mushrooms and guyere cheese was very good, stuffed boneless quail were tender and juicy served on a bed of mashed potatoes with a chicken reduction sauce, the entree had such a savory flavor it was amazing, then for dessert a pumpkin mousse that was so light served in a puff pastry that definitely had a wow factor.

Eccentrically decorated and beautiful. French rolls are warm, crusty and unbelievably good (just like all French bread should be). My waitress Natalie pulled the rolls right out of the oven. Wow. Their Country Pate was likely the best I've had since we were in Normandy FR. Pork medallions were wrapped in bacon, perfectly cooked, and very succulent. The large portion was a great surprise. The mushrooms served with the pork medallions were spectacular. I'd like to say they were marinated, but I'm totally guessing. Best to say they were sprinkled with magic spices 😉. They gave me a wonderful truffle for dessert that was on the house. Looking forward to our return visit.

Phenomenal! One of the most unique restaurants in KC. The food was exceptional french cousin with a beautifully eccentric decor. Great wine list and several special which I would recommend. Most haves; onion soup, goat cheese salad, shrimp/risotto, scallops and the ravioli. Can't wait to go back, Merci!

Had a nice birthday dinner here, the service was spot on and staff were so attentive. Everything we ordered from the seared duck to the fresh halibut was well prepared. The goat cheese salad was my favourite dish of the night. You could taste the freshness and good cooking techniques on everything, however I thought both proteins were under seasoned, and the sautéed vegetables needed more love. This is a charming little restaurant that doesn’t feel very snooty, even though it’s very pricey. Great location.

This French kitchen doesn't look like much from the street, but the decor is eclectic and the food is fantastique! I enjoyed the escargot (in the requisite indulgently rich garlic butter), the French onion soup, and the stuffed bacon-wrapped chicken. All was delicious. The service was attentive but not overbearing, which was wonderful. If I had to come up with a critical comment, it would be that the chairs on the patio need a little more padding. Should you find yourself craving French cuisine in KC, you won't go wrong with Le Fou Frog.

What a perfect dining experience. Location aside, the lovely atmosphere provided by the staff was immaculate, and the food backed the reputation of this wonderful little restaurant. My wife and I have already planned on coming back at some point in the future, and with more than just us! Wonderful all around time. Thank you for being a huge highlight in our getaway, Le Fou!!

Met with friends on Friday for dinner to celebrate Bastille Day and it was wonderful! Had so much fun in the cabaret-style setting with songs and entertainment from the servers. And the FOOD!!! Great menu with so many delicious choices. I started with the chilled vichyssoise. It was silky and delicious. I could easily have eaten another portion, it was that perfect. My next course was the lobster salad, another refreshing treat. And then the entree arrived. I have always been fond of sweetbreads and was happy to see them on the menu. This delicate dish was perfectly executed, and throughly enjoyed. I could have licked the plate. I should have. I was too full for dessert, but I did enjoy a chocolate truffle which was the perfect bite of sweetness to end a fabulous dinner. And lest I forget, the service was impeccable. Order and sip a French Pirate cocktail. You'll be glad you did.

We have eaten here several times and the menu never ceases to be amazing (we almost exclusively order from the rotating specials- seafood, lamb, duck, steak- it's all fantastic) and the staff is just incredible! If you are looking for a special meal or date night gem- this is the place! Outstanding food and service to match...can't recommend it enough!

The food, service and ambiance was exactly what I had envisioned for me and my wife's date night. From the amuse bouche all the way to the truffle chocolate dessert the food was fantastic. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants one of the best French dining experiences in Kansas City.

My favorite restaurant in Kansas City. The restaurant itself is understated in an old building; the dining room and bar are intimate and dimly lighted. The menu and wine list is extensive, containing many traditional French offerings. The food is deliciously prepared and the service is attentive and friendly.

The atmosphere, service, and food were all top notch. One of the best restaurants I’ve been to in KC.

Good things and bad things. The service was responsive and helpful. The atmosphere was nice, if a little dark. We both had escargot as our appetizer and it was excellent. My husband had a bouillabaisse with 1/2 lobster, and I had a lamb shank. We both found the main course bland with little depth. My husband said the lobster was 'mushy.' We finished with a nice port for myself, and a scotch for my husband. Both were very good. We may go back for appetizers and wine, or maybe for the port, but doubt we go back for dinner. A little pricey for bland food.

The staff is excellent and friendly; and the food was so decadent I felt like I needed a curtain to eat it without being indecent. Server's name was Michelle, she was very attentive and went above and beyond. Met the owner outside, I can tell why this restaurant has such a great atmosphere!
Cate Manley
Very sweet atmosphere. Can be formal or casual. Great drink options. Amazing food, all course.

Absolutely wonderful! From start to finish, just fantastic. Appetizers, fantastic. Soups, fantastic. Salads, wonderful. Mains, UNBELIEVABLE! Service, OUTSTANDING! Our waitress was extremely knowledgeable, and comfortable with making recommendations for us from both the wine list, and the menu. We came in to help celebrate an anniversary, and our waitress helped make the evening so much more memorable! (We hope she has great fun on her upcoming trip to Colorado!)
