Review Underground 119 - Jackson

Pretty hip, cool spot underground with live music, strong drinks and delicious food. The crowd is great as well.

Underground 119 has a very welcoming and unique atmosphere. Everyone always seems to be in a good mood and happy to be there, employees and patrons included. The building fills up very quickly so it is not uncommon to have to stand for the duration of your visit. With the musical acts they bring in, however, you probably won't be doing much sitting anyway! They only have 2 unisex stalls as bathrooms also, so the line can grow quickly. Overall a very fun place to spend an evening, and somewhere I will definitely return.

Visited Underground 119 on a Saturday for dinner at about 7 pm. No waiting, plenty of empty tables. Food was among the best I've had in ages: appetizers: hummus with pita chips and deep fried portabella mushroom slices: A-double-plus! Main course was excellent blackened catfish and the best turnip greens I've ever had period. Dessert was pecan pie a la mode - very good, no complaints, just nothing memorable. Drinks were fine. Price for 5 was just over $200. Lots of folks came in to hear the band which began to play around 9 pm. Place went from empty to standing room only over about a half hour. Can't comment on the music - not my thing - but obviously a LOT of people were enjoying it. Wait staff was good, not perfect. Atmosphere - meh - it's a basement that's decorated like a basement, Go for the food. The chef is a real talent.

Great atmosphere, of the two times I have been, the music was fantastic once and awful the other time. I'm sure it's good more often than not! I recommend checking their site for what band/genre will be playing on the night you decide to go.

Underground 119 is a old school basement blues bar. It has decent food decent service and a eclectic atmosphere. Prices are decent also. It generally serves as a great place for local low level legends to come out and strut their stuff.

So awesome. We saw Southern Komfort Brass Band there and it was #1.

So glad they reopened! Every week they have great blues singers and musicians and great food. It's a wonderful place to go and relax downtown after a hard days work

Staff was super friendly and the live music was great. Good food and stiff drinks! They really helped make my birthday special. I will be back again.

A platter vs a small plate. I love the atmosphere but don't order the shrimp platter! I paided $20 for 8 fried regular shrimp.

Loved the food!. Food was great, didn't like that we had to pay a cover even though we were just eating. Service could've been better but the food made up for it. Wing sauce is amazing and the Fried green tomato blt was so gooooood!!

Nice bar, great music, decent service but overpriced food. The best thing I have tried so far is the mushroom burger- great option for vegetarians!

Not bad for an afternoon beer. Based on previous reviews that either love or hate the food but universally say it's expensive, we decided not to go to Underground 119 to eat, but we did stop in for a couple of late afternoon drinks.

There was no live music yet, so no cover. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of beers and a couple of mixed drinks. Draught beer was two-for-one so were quite reasonably priced. The mixed drinks were expensive, though the bartender used huge shots of liquor.

The interior is much fancier than I expected. In fact, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't more of a dive. The basement location and the narrow stairs had me believing I was going down into a dark, seedy juke joint. No complaints, I was just surprised at how nice it is.

This place is a great, lively music venue. People are always having fun here. But don't go to 119 to eat. Literally - 100% of my friends have complained about cold (not luke warm, not cool... Cold) food and extremely slow service from the kitchen. I too have experienced this. Also, on more than one occasion, the chubby manager guy has been crude and ungracious to me and my friends. Despite how cool the venue is, and despite how much I love encouraging local business in Jackson, I don't think I'll be going back to 119 anytime soon.

This place is bad. I took my out-of-town family to Underground 119 to hear some music over the weekend. We ordered the Shrimp Gumbo, and I am not exaggerating when I say it was brown seafood stock, rice, okra, and chopped onions. It was also room temperature. We sent it back. Then we ordered the Steak & Lobster. It was also cold and so chewy that we were unable to eat it. We asked for the manager. The chubby guy that introduced the band came to our table and yelled at us. I told him to not yell at us and he said, "I am just talking over the music dude." We all agreed he was drunk.

On the bright side we had a waitress named "Z" and she was great. The food was bad though. And considering how much it costs, I am surprised people still go. We will not be back. They also added 18% to our bill even though there were only 4 of us. Not cool.

Disappointed*. We checked out the web site and saw pics online, we thought this place would be great.

Here are the positives: Great music venue; the music is good, loud, and full of energy, no matter who is playing (we have heard 2 different bands, different styles).

Here are the negatives: The menu looks great, but the food is really bad. We assumed they were just having an off night, but when we returned it was still bad. The portions were small and tasted like frozen food heated up, although our scallops came out cold. The other negative is the guy that runs it just walks around and says things on the mic. He reminded us of Boss Hogg and came across as very creepy to our girlfriends. He was pretty inappropriate to them, and kept getting on the mic. He seems to think he his food is like Parlor Market, but it is pretty bad, especially considering the price. If you go to the bathroom, you can see into the kitchen and they literally have bags of frozen foods like you would get in the freezer section of any grocery store. Both times we left with a $200 bill and felt like we had been ripped off.

I suggest you go late to hear music and order a drink or two, but steer clear of the food.

It was horrible! Seriously the worst service I've ever had. The waitress lost my friends card at one point during the night. It took literally 2 hours to get food which is ridiculous. We only had our drinks refilled every 45 minutes. Just to get our checks and pay took 30 minutes. We switched from their lounge area to their seated area to eat and the closed is out twice and charged us 20% gratuity even though the first waitress literally didn't bring us anything all she did was take our order. The portions were tiny even though the prices were very expensive.

Underground 119 - don't go. Don't go to Underground 119 if you are black. I recently visited 119 with a small group of friends (we're all black). In a place the thinks of itself as "post racial" OMGosh, I've never experienced such a racist owner/chef as this place. He was outright hostile.

8:30 Friday night, not open...

Service is terrible and it cost a ton.

Food is good just really expensive and not a lot. Drinks are good. It is a fun date night. Just eat before you go.

Loved the crab cakes and crab quesadillas. Infused vodka was interesting.

Really? The food here is not good, especially considering the price. Also, the kitchen is always slow. Tonight the bar was really slow despite a small crowd. Why do people continue to rave about this place??
Megan Williams
Great date place!! $10 per person cover is higher than I'm use to, but the band was great...so it's cheaper than a concert ticket. Can't wait to go back and try the food.

We had a very nice meal this evening. The new menu is great. The soft-shell crab was prepared in a very interesting way. It was excellent. Atmosphere is inviting.

By far my favorite food and atmosphere in Jackson. Andy Wilson has assembled an eclectic variety of dishes that far surpass any "want to be" trend setting restaurant. And, the consistent line up of top rate entertainment continues to draw me back til the wee hours.
911 has it all, and my hat's off to the entire staff. So, thanks to all of you for doing what you do to make that place possible.

Casey Hemmings
CEO, World Health Industries

119 is a great place. I can always count on it having great music, food and wine. It is my "go to" place when I have friends in town because there is something for everyone to love!

The food was great. The atmosphere was eclectic. Great band and good wine! I would definitely visit again!

Latest hot spot in Jackson!. My most favorite place in Jackson! Absolutely LOVE the music, food and drinks. I've been a regular patron of Underground 119 since it first opened a year ago, and have yet to be disappointed. The chef is constantly trying out new dishes to keep the menu fresh, and the weekly infused vodka is always worth trying. The live music gets the crowd up and dancing, and the servers and bartenders take great care of their guests.

Are you kidding me? Food=sub par and over priced. Service=uneducated and more concerned with how they look in mirror. Atmosphere= acceptable. 1 out of 4 tapas (all of which are old hat) was actually palatable. This place has potential if it could get out of it's own way.

Underground 119 is almost hidden, save a little sign and a flight of stairs off the west side of Presidents Street.
