this place gets busy on weekends so call ahead for a reservation. A solid cantonese style (milder southern chinese style cooking) seafood rich menu, focus on those items. they have live crab and lobster specials and most order those. very extensive menu so i’ve been here multiple times with various groups. they have been consistently solid each time. definitely not the best cantonese style i’ve had, but for honolulu, some consider it one of the best. seabass in blackbean sauce, honey walnut prawns, broccoli in garlic, crab in ginger scallion sauce were all good.
Amazing seafood and chicken. Very authentic flavors, and solid portion size and prices. Some items sell out though unfortunately!
Good Chinese restaurant in town, have tons of menu to choose (good for me), food tastes wonderful, and I am more than willing to visit more than once during the visit!
Though bit busy on the servers to order a menu, took bit time to get menu served. (Not too long though)
Had a pleasant lunch at Fook Yuen. It’s a first time visit to this Chinese restaurant and a satisfied experience. The live lobsters are very reasonably priced. They are well prepared, tasty and juicy!
They serve individual size whole abalone. Glad that they didn’t turn out rubbery, but don’t expect it to be as soft as the canned ones.
I enjoyed their shrimp and egg fried rice as well. Done just right. I think they do it the “emperor style”, with egg yolk and rice cooked in chicken broth?
Service is ok. A little short of staff I suppose. Overall still acceptable.
Likely to visit again.
Out of the 7 dishes my family order the
Pineapple Fried Rice & Walnut Shrimp were the 5 Stars favorites
The Fried Tofu wasa nice size but middle of the tofu was too uncooked and slimy
Salt & Pepper Lobster tasted basic
Clams were ok
Chinese Brocoli was decent
Sizzling Steak was probably the worst. I uggest never to buy this dish here.
Walnut Shrimp & Pineapple Fried Rice was the best. Shrimp was juicy and the fried rice was cooked well and seasoned well. Would order again.
Service was great but there is a long wait usually
It was just ok for me. I didn’t try to lobster, which is their specialty. Just because I’m not the biggest fan of lobster. I tried a soup recommendation from the waiter which was fish and crab, but I didn’t like it. However, The honey walnut shrimp and crispy noodle dish was good 4/5, but just not outstanding enough to impress me.
I don’t have a bad thing to say, I just wasn’t wow’d by anything.
We are tourist visiting Hawaii from the US mainland. We want to try some authentic Chinese Food and were reading some of these reviews here that mostly said the food was great but the service was bad. We decided to give it a try and to the contrary, the service was actually excellent. We arrived at 6pm on a Tuesday evening and was promptly seated. The waiter was very polite and gave us suggestions. Food came very quickly and it was delicious. The fried rice was done correct with good "wok hey". We tried the fried oster and the batter crust was just right, not too thick and very crunchy. Oster was fat and delicious. Having tried a lot of authentic cantonese chinese restaurants, in Toronto, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Chicago, etc, this place is totally up to par.
We were also watching how they served other tables and I am not seeing any bad experience between the service staff and other customers. Everyone seemed to be enjoying their meals and having a good time. On to the bill, we specifically watch for added tips as some were complaining here and we found none. Actually we found the prices are very reasonable, especially for Hawaii as most restaurants seem to be more expensive than on the mainland US side.
In summary, we enjoyed our dinner. The food was very authentic, fresh and tasty, the service was good and the value is very good.
Fool Yuen Seafood restaurant is an Authentic Chinese restaurant which serves delicious food, this place was recommended to us by our Uber Driver and it did not disappoint. The place was full on a weekday evening, prices were good. The service was a bit slow due to the amount of customers in the restaurant but not bad. Live lobster was $20 and was good.
They have a deal here where if you order an entree you can additionally order a whole lobster for $22. I like to get the fried rice and stir fry vegetables with tofu. The beef chow fun is also good! We’ve been here several times and have never had any issues.
Let me first say that the food here has been historically excellent. We've been here for over thirty years, since I was a wee kid, and I've never remembered a bad meal. Sometimes we get one bad dish or inadequate service, but overall the food has been consistently high-quality. This time, we went on a Monday evening at 7, and even then it was packed to the gills. There was no social distancing. Fortunately, we were fully vaccinated. Anyways, the dishes we had were: soup appetizer, fried tofu, Peking duck (whole), beef in sizzling brown sauce, honey roasted walnut shrimp, crispy stir fried noodles with seafood, ginger and onion lobster (2x), shrimp fried rice (2x), a beer and two cokes. The bill before tip was just $200 - a great price for a higher tier Chinese restaurant in Hawaii. Service was the typical Chinese matter of fact service (just starting facts - I'm part Chinese) - not awful, but far from the best, a 2 out of 5 stars. It was especially mediocre tonight since it was packed and a high-action, high-stress environment. We had to ask for condiments, napkins, and even water. It might be a shock for those used to fine dining service, but for us regulars we are used to it. So in short, this is a great place for those just wanting awesome Chinese food and don't mind the packed seating and typical Chinese restaurant service.
