Steak 'n Shake

I can’t believe how bad it is here now. Everything is made to get you out of the place. Seats taped off, no music, no table service, food shoved in your hand in brown bags and styrofoam boxes, plastic forks and MUCH smaller portions than ever. I can’t even describe how sad it is to think about what Steak and Shake used to be. People used to go just to enjoy some ice cream and friends. April 2022. Someone needs to let them know the pandemic is over and it’s time to open your awesome place back up.

Between 4/10 and 4/12 we visited Steak&Shake of Hixson. Walked up and found a sign says order at counter and sit wherever. Lady with light color hair pulled back in ponytail was there, in different uniform the rest of staff, leaning to believe she was the manager or leader. She was leaning on the countertop with elbow, and head supported by her hand. After asking if lobby was open she said “yes you just have to order right here. What can I get you?” The expression she gave was disappointment and maybe inconvenience that we have come to eat. No friendly service and no greeting of any sort. Needless to say, we turned around and left. Such a disappointment. Families like ourselves take time to choose where to eat, we head to that restaurant, only this time we are met with a very unfriendly, unprofessional host. If she was a member of the leadership team, she needs retraining or a demotion.

So here’s the thing. I get it. But tonight was the second night we went and they were closed. Online hours day they close at 11, but we rolled up at 8:50 and they were locking up. Last time we rolled up at 7:30 - they told us they were closing at 8 and couldn’t cook anything…but online it’s listed at 11? It’s not hard to change hours online. And even still, I’ve worked in the fast food industry and stopping cooking half an hour before “closing” is kind of crazy. So the first time we just got milkshakes that were basically just milk. Where are the standards? Like I get it’s fast food or whatever but come on…really? It’s Friday night and it wasn’t even 9 yet, you know how much business you’re probably turning away?

The girl at the counter had the personality of a dead person, the floor is so sticky and greasy that I went to the bathroom and my legs spread apart it was so slippery. No hot water in the bathroom. The shack was delicious but the food was horrible, my BBQ burger bottem was split in half and fell apart when i picked it up. It was a shame because it was our first and last visit to this chain.

Very poor service. They were rude because my son ordered a root beer float and they “don’t have a button for it” but have all the ingredients and I was willing to make one myself if they gave me a cup or root beer and a vanilla milk shake. They were rude about it and didn’t give me a straw or a napkin. I had to ask for one and the girl shoved it through the window and slammed the window shut in my face.

Apparently things have changed. There are no waitresses. But there were 6-7 staff standing around gossiping. You order at the door, pay, sit down and wait for them to call your name so you can go pick it up. We were eating in, and it didn't come out on a tray and dishes, but wrapped like fast food in a brown bag. She put our bag of hot food on the counter but didn't call our name. It sat for 5 minutes before she brought out the shakes. I asked if that was ours and she said yes. Our food was luke warm. The funny part, she put our food far away on the counter. It would've been closer to just bring it out to us. And, the straws... They're now paper straws. They were so narrow we couldn't drink our milk shakes with them (think eye of a needle). There were no spoons. We took our shakes home to eat. We used to love Steak n Shake. But we will never go back.

I moved to Hixson a year ago, and I’ve probably been to Steak N Shake 10-12 times in that timeframe. What I’ll never understand, is probably 7-8 of those times, the fries that come with my meal are so undercooked, they aren’t even edible. How is that possible with the shoestring fries they use? I would gladly sit in the drive thru for another 2 mins for you to cook your fries properly. They are gross and at this point, I just can’t go there anymore. It’s ridiculous
