Delicious food, super prompt service, nice and friendly servers, affordable dinner- excellent spot!
The teriyaki chicken is now my daughters’ favorite! The Portuguese soup was delicious. The linguine bolognese super well portioned.
The server was very kind and helpful! The tri dish was great to split.
Mengo cheese cake didn't really have a strong mango flavor, but was a really good cheese cake.
Mud pie was an amazing ice cream pie! The top layer is creamy chocolate with a fudge layer then the bottom layer is a wonderful caramel ice cream with chocolate cookie crumb.
Would definitely come here again if I was not going back to MN.
I've been eating at Don's Grill since it opened and it's one of my personal favorites in Hilo for local style comfort food. The restaurant itself can get a little cramped during busy times but the food has been consistently good for so many years, it doesn't matter once you're served your meal. They also have great desserts, especially their pies. The regular menu items are still as good as they were back in the day and the specials (like the ahi katsu special in my photo) have always been great.
Loved it!!
We had the half chicken & ribs, and the special s&s ribs. Both meals were fantastic, really couldn't fault the food, even the bread was beautiful that came with it.
If you want just simple, but super tasty food this is the place to go! They haven't tried to make it fancy or posh but focused on flavour and food quality. I left a very happy human and hope to make it back again before my time in hilo is up

Great, little local place. Still pretty worried about Covid stuff (March 2023) so lots of people waiting outside to be seated or to pickup to-go food.
Very attentive and friendly people working here. Fried shrimp and fries was pretty good. Other food was just ok. Rounding my 4 up to a 5 because it’s a comfy place and they’re very sweet.
This is a great Diner style of eating. Very clean and wonderfully fresh food. You wait outside the door to be seated and sanitizer is provided to sanitize your hands upon entry. The waiter/waitress are all friendly and efficient. The food came out quickly and the drinks were constantly refilled. The side salad was not permanent and wrapped, they put it together when it was ordered. All fresh ingredients. The price is one of the best in the area and you get a plateful of food. I would be a regular to this place.
Don’s reminded me of where all the locals go to. Like a diner, they had a good menu that covered all types of meals. They are definitely still skeptical social distancing, as they only allow groups to wait outside. Our waitress was super sweet and service was speedy. I went with the loco moco, a Hawaiian classic, and it was delicious! Only $8.50 too!
Excellent main items okay sides. Friendly staff. This is a place worth returning to. The Teri Chicken was great. Lasagna was delicious. Mixed veggies and mashed potatoes on the side nothing special. There are many more things that we want to try on the menu. Look at the menu and photos and you can probably figure out what will be good for you.
A family friendly homestyle diner with classics and local items on the menu. Plenty of variety to choose from. Good service and straightforward pricing.
We were in Volcano on a Sunday night but the dining choices are extremely limited. So we decided to drive into Hilo for dinner. Don's Grill is really a diner experience. It has basic, solid food with a Hawaiian flair I ordered the mixed plate (grilled mahi mahi, chicken teriyaki, and a fried pork cutlet with brown gravy), my husband ordered the clubhouse sandwich, and my daughter ordered the chop chicken Hawaiian. Entrees come with a choice of soup or salad along with a dinner roll.
Unfortunately, the vegetables that came with the chop chicken Hawaiian were predominantly onions which my daughter hates, the menu just says vegetables. My husband and I enjoyed our dishes. I'd say that the Teriyaki chicken was the star of the mixed plate.
