United Deli And Grocery

This place is something of a legend in the Columbus/West Point/Starkville area, and rightly so. The uninitiated might see it as just a gas station restaurant...but in actuality, it's one of the best places to get a sandwich in Mississippi. United Deli is family run, and everyone is happy to make recommendations if you're not sure what to get. They'll also be sure to remind you to grab a piece of baklava, too, which you probably should. :) When I visited with a friend, we got the grilled cheese and John's Special. Both were mega tasty - the highlight is the bread, which is crunchy at the edges and soft at the center. No idea if it's baked fresh, but it is GREAT bread. Everything, including the meats, tastes fresh here. The fries were a bit of a low point; they were hot and salty, but kind of unremarkable. Still, this is a deli, not a McDonald's - go get a sandwich!!

The John sandwich is one of the best I’ve ever eaten. We stopped by in the middle of the afternoon and bought a 9” to have for a picnic around 4:30. It was sliced into 3 sections, and we were only able to eat 2 portions. My husband finished the rest as a nighttime snack. The only way it would have been better was eating it fresh from the store.

I am not a huge sandwich girl, but my husband works in Columbus and brought me home his leftovers to Alabama one day and this is the MOST amazing sandwich I have ever had in my life! Such a treat when he brings me home his leftovers (which, are an entire half of a sandwich- that for me, becomes leftovers as well. The portions are insane! I asked him the price and expected this to be a crazy $13 sandwich. Not the case, but the portion is worth every bit of that). I did go to Columbus and try to find it myself today, and sadly- the gas station across the rd from it said they had never heard of a great sandwich place (haters!) so I didn’t even give the deli a shot. Came home to Google it and I will for sure be going to the correct gas station next time! Five stars!
