Had reservations and we had to wait about 10 minutes to sit. Restaurant looks old and dated. Food was brought quickly. Waitstaff was knowledgeable. We had almond sea bass on green beans and it was good not great. Salmon was excellent with a soy glaze.
Best fish meal ever. MB rating 9. Frequented by Clint Eastwood amd other celebrities. Feels like a fish shack inside but very cozy. Great wine list.
THE FLYING FISH ASCENDS TO EXTRAORDINARY HEIGHTS IN CARMEL. We had heard about the great seafood on hand at the Flying Fish Restaurant in Carmel. So, we invited some friends and decided to give it a try. First of all, the restaurant has a real ‘cozy’ feel about it, small booths, plenty of privacy and a restaurant where everyone can actually talk to one another without shouting across the table. We were welcomed (we had made a reservation unlike the couple in front of us – they were told the earliest table would be in about two hours). Our table got to the point of enjoying some of their high quality seafood. Appetizers consisted of lightly fried calamari (served with either lemon or a spicy sauce) another guest had the Steamed Artichoke with wasabi mayonnaise and miso vinaigrette. Our main course – Black peppered grilled crusted Ahi, with shimeji mushrooms, mustard sesame-soy vinaigrette and angel hair pasta. “Mighty tasty” was the verdict. Other courses consisted of Pan-fried Almond crusted sea bass with whipped potatoes, Chinese cabbage and rock shrimp stir-fry. The dish was a slightly heavy, but the taste was divine. Others had the Grilled Alaskan Black Cod with papaya-avocado-grilled leeks salsa; sesame dressed arugula and toasted couscous. The Cod was the winner – it had just the right texture, flavor and essence. We split two desserts – the restaurants Crème brûlée and the very yummy Green Tea Sundae. We had to flag down the waiter a few times – but once he served us it was ‘first-class.’ Overall, we did feel the price was a bit high for the dinner and the menu offering were quite limited. On the “Tommy B Restaurant Rating Scale” from “A” to “F” the Flying Fish gets a very solid “B+
Go. I'm telling everyone.
Without question the best dinning experience in Carmel. The food was fantastic and the service went way above. A must stop in Carmel. Thank you Tony!
1.They made room for us on a busy nite
2. Our waiter was top notch and made the best recommendations
3. My date was super handsome
One of my favorite resturants ever. I've been going there for years and always have a great meal. Kenny is always there -- it's great to have the owner that "hands on". Wonderful place.
One of the best meals ever! The artichoke was excellent.Excellent wonton chips and dipping sauce.Main dishes delicious. Great place.
Superb! We arrived w/o reservations at 7pm & had to come back at 8:30 for a table. It was well worth the wait! The sea bass & salmon were phenomenal as were the artichoke appetizer & creme brûlée. You must eat here if in Carmel!
The atmosphere wad very nice. Fireplace near where we ate for a very romantic setting. The service was excellent with our waiter spending time with us chating with us about Carmel. The food was very good and very reasonably priced.
If you like fish cooked perfectly, this restaurant must be on your visit list.
I have eaten here 5-6 times, and every time the food was outstanding. Wait staff are super friendly and professional.
Only downside is that the entrance is not handicap friendly.
Loved this restaurant. Small and cozy, very fun vibe that makes you feel like you’re somewhere else. The food was very good. The Asian fusion dishes are very well executed. The California Tower and the Black Bean Halibut were outstanding. Will definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants good fish dishes in the area.
This place was recommended to us and we went for our 10 year anniversary weekend… it did NOT disappoint. The Yin-tan salmon was amazing! Easily one of the best places we’ve eaten and we have been fortunate with our dining experiences. Tony was an excellent server as well. We highly recommend!
If you are into Chinese fusion cuisine and a little more grease than normal, this restaurant is for you. I had halibut and it was so-so. It would have been a lot better in less (soy?) sauce.
I am still traumatized by my first bite of calamari - there was so much grease I raced for the water. The won tons didn't help send the grease down, as they were super oily too. Along with semi-fried rice, I'm done with oil for a few months. Holy cow. And to hear the calamari was caught that morning, they could have presented it in a more healthy way.
They pride themselves in having the same menu for 20 years. When I heard that while ordering, I gasped. Maybe that is a feature to some. To me, it means old-school, fattening/greasy food with strong (instead of subtle) flavors.
The atmosphere is nice. So are the servers. I would have rated this 3 stars but don't want to affect their rating. They are nice people. And, I may be a minority here regarding the taste/grease.
What a great experience. Wonderful staff, loved the atmosphere, food was everything we hoped for and much more. Hardest thing was deciding what to order. We had 4 people in our party everyone ordered something different and all of the dishes were amazing. Banana split desert was ridiculous, should have ordered a second one after the first, only regret. Won’t forget this place. Thank you for such a good time.

Their style of salsa and “chips” was a welcome surprise. We had the California Tower, Rare Pepper Ahi, and the Yin Yan Salmon and LOVED all three. The most delicious dinner in Carmel and well worth the price! Can’t wait to come back 🥰
Wish we could give more than 5 Stars. We've been visiting this area for decades and have missed coming here. Too bad for us. What an amazing first visit. Through good and bad times, this place has remained. You have to visit to experience why. What a great experience. Thank you all ;-) Seafood Clay Pot for 2...is what's pictured.
Great atmosphere and delicious food.
Tuna sashimi was fresh and the rare peppered ahi (pic) was very tasty.
Delicious meal here. Would highly recommend the halibut in particular. Excellent service, cosy atmosphere and food was fresh and full of flavour. Can’t wait to come back!
We loved our evening at Flying Fish Grill. The calamari appetizer was the best calamari I've ever had in the US. Utterly fresh, tender, perfectly prepared and served with a spicy aioli. The yin-yan salmon was exceptional, as was the almond crusted sea bass. Favorite dessert: green tea sundae. Service was great - fun and personal. Couldn't have been a better experience.
