Penny has a really great approach to designing wedding cakes! During our consultation, we didn’t have a very clear idea of what we wanted. Luckily, Penny was full of great ideas! She asked us questions about what vibe we were going for, what our venue was like, and what was important to us both aesthetically and sentimentally for the cake to reflect.
We were already feeling pretty good about Penny after one phone call with her. THEN we tasted the cake. It was MUCH higher quality then the two other bakers we tasted cakes from. After that we were sold. We hired her to a design a wedding cake that reflected the venue (a rooftop farm in Brooklyn). She came up with the really cool idea of designing a cake that reflected the distinctive bluestone pathways and wildflower groves that distinguish the venue. I felt like I had a unique, meaningful work of art at my wedding!
She handled all the logistics of getting the cake to the venue with our coordinators so we did not need to deal with any of that ourselves. Penny is a true pro!
Penny at Sugar Couture is phenomenal! I have used her a few times. Once for my wedding and for a few birthdays. Where to start??? She had me at her red velvet. That was my birthday cake. I got one of her amazing whimsical creations. She literally can make anything you can imagine come to life in cake. My wedding cake was gorgeous and delicious. I had no idea what I wanted. I'm super indecisive and she came up with a beautiful design based on my color scheme and she did it based on a conversation. She is great at understanding what you want or getting our of you what you will enjoy! I can't say enough great things about it (and neither can my belly).
I first spotted one of Penny’s fondant creations in a New York Magazine article showcasing wedding cakes that were museum-worthy works of art by themselves. I fell in love with her cake right then and there, which I’d contracted her to recreate for me before I bought my wedding dress! She had a wide variety of flavors to choose from, ranging from the traditional to the more exotic (like lemongrass sponge-cake and passion fruit buttercreams). All in all, her cakes are beautiful and delicious, inside and out.
In addition, Penny was amazing to work with as she’d custom-designed two macaron flavors for our escort cards and two types of desserts to accompany the wedding cake for our guests. She was very patient with me and the many questions I had. She was so nice to offer me advice on aspects of planning my wedding that didn’t have to do with the cake and the sweets. I would definitely go back to her again to have her design a cake or a special dessert for another event in the future.
I've been patiently awaiting the opening of this shop. As someone who has been a longtime fan of Penny's cakes both in taste and design, I longed for the day when I could stop in and purchase sweet and savory treats whenever I wanted. That day has finally come. It's hard to pick a favorite item from the menu because everything is so delicious. Start with a bacon jam croissant for breakfast, stop back for lunch and try the savory focaccia (my favorite is the tomato and prosciutto), and don't forget to order a slice of cake (I had the lemon ginger cake with passion fruit buttercream). The shop has a wonderfully warm vibe and is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. See you there!
Penny is a consummate professional and a true creative. She's done a cake and "theme" cookies for me. Both were equal parts delicious and beautiful.
I hope that Sugar Couture finds it's way to a store front soon, but in the meantime, I look forward to working with/ordering from Penny again!
I went here this past Sunday. Oh. My. Butter. I ordered a chocolate croissant...Flaky. Sweet. Just the right amount of chocolate (none of that cheap stuff either - real chocolate - real butter, real everything). I bought a second one. I make no apologies. I'd do it again. And will. To anyone thinking this place is a bit expensive, it's not - this is not mass produced pastries ala that chain with the green mermaid where people pay a lot more for a lot less. This felt special. Not a run in and run out kind of place...unless you want to run in for some extra sweets for a special occasion.
I took two trains to get there, and I was only disappointed I could stay longer.
Penny is a magician. Whether she's making one of the most incredible wedding cakes i've ever seen, or putting all of herself into making my son's first birthday cake, her creations aren't just memorable - they're unforgettable. Plus, they taste like they should be illegal.
loved the cupcakes here but they are served cold. maybe meant for people with more patience bc you have to wait till they are room temp before eating them unless you want to taste straight butter. just a warning, but totally worth it once you try it. my fav is red velvet =)
Tried some of the cupcakes - perfect balance of moist and dense cake, delicious creamy frosting. I tried the lemon, chocolate and carrot spice- my favorite was the lemon - sweet and tart yum!
Excellent coffee (Toby's Estate!), Incredible pastries, as well as delicious savory items. The service is always fantastic, great part of the community. Socially conscious!
