They have very good service and the food is even better. The beef rider and fries is hard to beat but if you want to take a chance get the best burger in Birmingham. If I was close I would eat here every day!

Best burger in town.. Title says it all. Combine with hot/crisp fries, and you have a serious winner. Try it with the homemade ranch dressing. Enjoy!

Great burgers! I can't describe how good the burgers really are...just incredible. Chicken, beef, and steak riders are also good. For breakfast, their breakfast sandwich is a MUST. Sausage, ham, bacon, egg, cheese, and tomato all on Texas toast. This place never disappoints.

I have been coming here for years. One of my favorite places to eat. If you haven't tried the chicken rider, give it a try & your taste buds will be truly happy.

No need to change a classic. I went back to Sammy's after not having stopped by in many years, and found out that it hasn't changed a bit. That is a good thing. I was actually on my way to the airport to catch a flight and needed something to go. Although I wasn't really in a hurry, Sammy went out of his way to speed up my order, even wrapping my camel rider in aluminum foil so it wouldn't leak or spill while I went through security. Even thought I'm by no means a "regular", it was obvious Sammy valued me as a customer and made me feel appreciated. For a $10 meal, that is high class service. Although the north Avondale aren't is off the beaten path for lots of folks, it never hurts to grab a sandwich when going to/from the airport. Breakfasts there area also good.

Cheezbugga! Cheezbugga!. I knew I'd screwed up before I even finished saying "To go, please." The last time I had seen the expression now on the owner/cook/server/cashier/dishwasher/bookkeeper's face was when I had just told my grandmother "No thanks, I just ate a corn dog." "Sit down, Let me fix you something to eat.", she had said. I bet her look on her face would have been no different if I had slapped her with a corn dog. No doubt about it; he had that corn dog face.

I had been warned. I knew going into what appears, to the casual observer, to be a run of the mill sandwich shop. I knew, that this really is one of the last family restaurants in a town that had one in every neighborhood just a few years--decades actually, a few decades ago. Family restaurant, not because they served food family style, or food for families, family as in "Sit down, let me fix you something to eat." Yes, THAT family. True hospitality had caught me unawares. It was so unfamiliar in a restaurant, that it was somewhat disorienting, and just a teeny bit uncomfortable. So don't say that you have'nt been warned.

OK, OK --the review:

Decor: Formica and florescent, sparkley clean as well.
Food: of course, have the cheeseburger. You won't regret it. Do NOT miss the house made baklava. Buy an extra piece in case your cat decides to eat some while you're not looking, as mine did. (I know, WTF??)
Service: see above gushing
Location: Only 8 minutes from downtown, in historic Woodlawn. A Bohem--- no, that's not the word. Sketchy, I think that may be the word.
Dress: Business Casual to Ghetto Fabulous

More than food - it's an experience. Can't really add much to what everyone else has said about the cheeseburger - it's great! But there is more to this place than the food. It is obvious that these folks love what they are doing and enjoy being around each other and their customers.

It has been a pleasure eating here over the years. You are always greeted with a smile by the family. The food is great! One of the best burgers around! The breakfast was top-notch. Unfortunately they are no longer serving breakfast. The chef salad is delicious and the club sandwich is excellent.

In town for work and stopped by this Diamond in the rough! Great service, and a burger that is out of this world!!! Bacon cheeseburger with everything on it, and really amazing seasoned crinkle cut fries. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in town!!

Oh my gosh what a find. I have lived in Alabama all of my life and I’ve never been to Sammy’s!!! It was awesome. The owners are incredible & so nice & welcoming. We had the cheese burger —- so fresh & delicious. Heads up the burgers s BIG so you definitely get your Moneys worth. Will be going back & trying some of the other great items on the menu. Thanks for making us feel like we were eating lunch with our family.

This place is the best! The family is wonderful they never have gotten in a hurry but they seem to put the food out in very timely manner. I use to visit this place at least once a week for lunch and probably three times + a week for breakfast. They had the best breakfast sandwich I’ve ever had. The burgers were so flavorful and fulfilling they never got smaller like the other burger joints. I haven’t had the chance to visit there in about 10 years but I could guarantee you that when I entered the door they would remember me. They are very observant and have the memory of a elephant lol. Don’t miss the opportunity to have a delicious meal and a very unique experience. I really need to get back to Birmingham and visit the triple “S” Aka SAMMY’S SANDWICH SHOP. Please check it out. 45 seconds off the interstate, 2 minutes from the airport, 5 minutes away from downtown, zoo, civic center, Eastlake, Eastwood and Tarrant. Don’t miss the opportunity!!!!

Overall, good food. Orders are made fresh upon arrival and in order so if its busy be prepared to wait. The menu has change vs what is on websites currently so check the menu when you arrive. Pay with cash unless you want to be charged a 4% service charge. It is written credit but apparently it is on credit and debit. Overall a good stop and will probably go back one day to try lunch.

Definitely one of the best burgers out there, this place gets packed quick. Went in for breakfast several times now and it is the best. Real down home service and cooking. Best pancakes I've ever had period.

I did not get a chance to eat at this restaurant, but sure it was packed with people waiting. These people were determined to order and get their lunch. That told me the food is good. There were maximum 20-25 people and one was eating. I waited at the cashier but only one man going around the tables. I was trying to figure out the type of sandwich place but did not see the menu next to the cashier table neither on the wall, but I saw baklava inside the case. Then the waiter approached me and said sit right here pointing at the table for 4 after he saw me talking to the customer who is only one person has his food eating. -Do you know what's good food to order here? Of course, he would say pointing at his own plate and said burger and fries. I felt that was not good wuestion. I am not a fun of a burger. I always look at others plate to give ideas what to order. I am visual. But when I saw baklava, I knew they were either Greek or other countries around toward east side of mediteranian land where the food taste delicious. So, I decided to sit, too. All tables were full including where I was told to sit. No music and silence was dominant like children waiting for most favorite ice cream. 4 guys sitting next table were talking each other wispering voice, and scrolling their phone up and down. I noticed they were just set down and waiting to order. I asked myself what makes these people waiting patiently. I saw.a man in his early 40s in charge of the floor who takes the orders, fill the drinks. He didn't look the type of a typical waiter would give you a big welcome smile. He walked the ground with sure confident. Still wasn't sure what was their secret. I started to look around and saw an older man an a woman in their 70s cook the ingredients of their sandwich. I knew they are the parent and son is the waiter. These two possible married for life and cook together with love and joy their special sandwich. I thougth I was in a right place to order my lunch after 3 failed attempts to order from other places. It was my work lunch break and didn't have much time. I headed to barbecue on the other side of the rail road. I couldn't even past the rail road, the train parked for hours. I knew it wasn't going to move. Because in the morning commuting to work, the long train was there not moving and still the same. So, I turned around to the Popeye, parked my car, but couldn't get in. It was locked and cairs were fillipped over the tables but only drive thru available. Drive thru is not my favorite either but lined up my car to order but only 3 cars front of me were the same 1st time I saw. After 10 min.wait I thought I should try the convenient store. That was a wrong move. After driving there and park, get out of car enter to store find out no food all trays were clean and dry. It seems they used to have warm meal. Then I went back to Popeye drive thru lane again. Still the wasn't moving. I guess they were cooking after the order placed. That is how I found the Sammy's Sandwich. It is at the corner of 2 parallel road joins together. Looks gas station but never was. There 2 businesses; One Sammy's and the other is mini grocery store with metal fence at front and door. Parking lot is almost full. Any how, after I heard waiter asking to the table what they want, I knew it is going to be a wait that I couldn't afford. I sneaked out of the shop feeling bad and didn't want to resent the owner. I said I'll come back tomorrow. I got in to my car and google the nearest Subway that I know what they have and no waiting. I kind of did the city tour and end up where franchise place. I mean I love local food. They always use their creativity and family recipes that the big restsursnts diesnt. Most of all I want to try and support local restaurants. That was my attempt to eat at Sammy's Sandwich place story. I know next time if I make it to the area again, I'll sure will go there at least 11-11:30 am.

I love Sammy’s. I always try to get an early enough flight into Birmingham to stop by and have a Beef Rider - you need a Rider in your life - peppers and onions and lettuce and tomato and ranch and cheese oh my!! The regular burgers and fries are exceptional also. Just stop in. The menu is on the wall. The owners are friendly and always here. This is the best little spot that I just won’t miss.
