We have been here 3 times since we moved to Austin 2 weeks ago, so that tells you something! We are SO glad we found this place! Laid back, casual, family friendly, good home cooking, nothing fancy. Just friendly people and country/bluegrass live music that varies. We are in our 50's and like the vibe here a lot. The steaks were tender, well seasoned and prepared just right with grilled onions; the burgers were juicy and fresh with all the fixins, and the chicken fried steak light and crispy. I'm not a fan of chicken fried steak, but the owner Luisa let us try some fresh out of the kitchen and I was super impressed! Not heavy or greasy at all. The pecan pie was stellar. Not too sweet or runny. My husband is in LOVE with the peach cobbler, which sells out fast. Tonight we had chocolate cake, which was fresh, moist and had plenty of frosting. There was a casual group of 9 musicians on various instruments which was a delight to listen to! All the staff are a joy to be around. This will be our new "go to" place.
Large portions and real authentic friendliness made this somewhere I plan to return. I had the chicken fried steak for the Wednesday special - it came with a side of creamy mac and cheese and some fries, all for less than $9 after tax.

Great home-cookin and friendly service!. I loved this place and can not wait to go back! I had the CFS and mashed potatoes (which was the special). Really was a good change from chain restaurants. Everyone was so nice. Going to try the breakfast soon. :)
Grew up in North Austin, but been gone twenty years or so. Just lucked upon this place while driving around looking at the ol' stomping grounds. Excellent food and fabulous friendly service. A+
OMG the food was so good and the service was awesome. I would recommend this place to any one.
Best southern place ever. This place was fantastic. It was a small cafe where you order up front and they bring you your food. Everyone was friendly and it had a family owned small town feel to it, even though you are in the middle of a city. All the food was fantastic and very inexpensive, especially the chicken fried chicken.
Hard to beat. If you like good old fashioned Texas food like hamburgers and CFS, Ross' is the place. The owner Ross is always there behind the counter making sure everyone is happy.
We were looking for something new and good and we ordered carryout. Best southern food I've had at any restaurant and friendliest staff! I don't recommend the salad bar tho
Wonderful Food, Atmosphere and Service. I LOVE eating at Ross's Old Austin Cafe! If you like good homestyle cooking you need to eat at Ross's Old Austin Cafe. They have the best grilled chicken, hamburgers and homemade soups I have eaten in a long time. The customer service is GREAT! Ross and Steven make you feel like family and right at home. I recommend Ross's to all my friends andhave definitely put it at the top of my list.
Luisas Patio has great ambient! Dog and family friendly! You have to try their new menu is authentic Mexican home made dishes! They also have live music during the weekends and the owners are young and cool, very friendly staff! I can't wait to see all the changes they will be bringing to their interior! A must eat spot!
The chicken fried steak was just okay for me, but that's not my go to entree. The company was better than the grub. Mary was very polite and gave us some cookies and a sample of her apple cobbler on the house. Would visit again.
Real everything! Frfr! Chicken friend chicken with mashed potatoes and corn. About to try homemade apple pie with ice cream. This is a must while in hill country.. update. Apple cinnamon pie heated and serve with ice cream. Was enough to satisfy soul. Great staff
We love this place,the new ownership is stepping up the game. Its about time north Lamar gets a good patio bar. I can't wait for a night out listening to music.

Really a great little place for a great old school burger that is juicy goodness.
Came here to meet up with some friends and we had a pleasant time hanging out, spoke to Ross himself and enjoyed some LIVE music here as well.
Definitely worth coming back when you want a simple meal in a comfortable atmosphere.
Want some authentic Mexican food? Well this is the place to go. Everything on the menu is a must try. Love it! Luisa and her staff are awesome!
Nice old mom and pop type cafe. Order when you first walk in. Portion sizes are HUGE! had fried fish with fries and husband had chili cheese burger. Everything is homemade and delicious.
I came to Ross' for the first time today at lunch. I have driven by here before for years and seen multiple cars here in the morning for breakfast. On occasion I have seen multiple cop cars here eating. My general rule is if cops are congregating at a restaurant for food it must be decent. Today I had the chicken fried steak, today's special. I was told it is what they are known for. It did not disappoint! It wasnt overly huge to where I felt miserable. It was just right. The green beans were flavorful. And th mash potatoes had the texture of homemade mashed potatoes. The food was great. I will be back and most likely become a regular. I recommend this place for lunch.
Really great food right in the heart of Austin I was lucky to find this place only learned about it after being told by another person how good the lunch specials are.
Awesome chow! Great price! Stellar staff! Open every day. I haven't been here in 6 months, but they remembered my order exactly when I walked in. Must mention the cook José who works all the magic here.
