Pam and I have had Grange Kitchen and Bar on our radar for over a year now. Finally got there last evening to give them a try. I had a business engagement and so we arrived for our reserved table about 9:45 p.m. We were warmly greeted and seated immediately.
In looking over the interesting beverage menu (which has a nice selection of Michigan microbrews and interesting cocktails), I selected the Brown Hound from Frankenmuth Brewing and my wife went with Abbie's Orchard. Both were very good.
Our server Austin went over the menu with us and told us how they could have farm to table shrimp from Michigan (which they are, aquaculture raised near Okemos). Pam has some food allergies and had called ahead regarding them. Grange had carefully gone over their menu ingredients and our server was prepared with all the menu items which would be safe for her to eat. That is very well appreciated by us and we have dined in other places where such attention to detail was not taken.
My dining companion selected an appetizer of thinly sliced, chilled beef and a sour cream with dill sauce and I had the chorizo with blue cheese and dates. The blend of the savory cheese and sausage with the sweetness of the dates was divine.
Next came a local green salad with radish and carrot for me and the shaved squash salad for Pam. Both were incredibly fresh and flavorful.
Pam chose the Michigan shrimp for her entree and I the heirloom pork. Her shrimp combined with chantrelles and gnocchi was exquisite and exceptionally tasty. My pork chop was broiled to perfection and the sauteed kale, sour cabbage and cranberries were a symphony of flavor and texture. Fantastic.
I completed our dining experience with some of their house made coffee ice cream and Roos coffee and Pam found the flourless chocolate cake with black peppercorn ice cream to be a fitting finale to a wonderful meal.
Our server was attentive yet not annoying or hovering throughout the evening. He made sure Pam's questions regarding ingredients were all answered and thoroughly explained not only what each menu item we inquired about was but who the local producer was that supplied the ingredients.
Everything was wonderful and we will be back again.
I can't give this place enough praise. Please keep in mind, this is not the type of restaurant where you go to grab a quick bite to eat, this is the type of place you go to experience great food and drinks.
We have friends who live in the area, so when I suggested we go out to dinner for my fiance's birthday, this was the first place that came to mind. Everyone at the table absolutely loved everything we had, especially those duck fat fries! Because we were in no hurry, we all ordered drinks off their cocktail menu, and their bartender really knows how to make a strong drink but still have it taste delicious. Not one of us was disappointed with our drink selection, and same goes for the appetizers and entrees.
The wait staff was exceptional and extremely friendly. We had a few friends with dietary restrictions, and the staff went above and beyond to make sure they were cared for. I would recommend this place to anyone in the Ann Arbor area who is looking for a remarkable dinning experience.
