I visited the Beaver Tails location on the boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey in July 2018. I was looking forward to the delicious pastry that I have had several times, years ago on trips to Canada. I purposely chose to stay at a motel behind the boardwalk for a short walk to this store.
I was blessed to have a nice conversation with the manager on the first day of my visit. He made me a delicious apple cinnamon beaver tail pastry, which was my breakfast.
However, I found out that they are not open for breakfast. That is why it took a 10 minute wait at 9:30am until he came from the back to the counter. It appears to be open (door open), but he said that it was not. He was Canadian, and may not realize that most Americans eat pastries for breakfast, not lunch or dinner.
Another problem was that the menu was flat on the counter, not on the wall where customers walking by could see it. And maybe that is because they are a bit expensive versus American pastries: $7 vs $2 (equivalent of about 2 donuts). Dunkin Donuts, which was really close to this location on the same boardwalk, had people out the door waiting to make purchases.
I also came back in the afternoon for Poutine, another Canadian dish that I like. It is fries with cheese curds and gravy on top. It was good, but again about $7 (including tax).
The final problem is that they only accept cash. With higher prices like that, people may not be willing to spend much with cash only.
By the way, I returned the next morning, but did not have time to wait for the manager. He did not respond after calling his name. A bell might help when employees are in the back. So I ended up going to the nearby Dunkin Donuts, and missed out on a 2nd pastry and conversation.
I really like their food. But if I had not already experienced this food in Canada, I would have skipped this location. I would suggest that they offer samples to people walking by, like they do at some mall restaurants. That way people would become familiar with Beaver Tails pastries and poutine.
I would really like Beaver Tails to succeed in the U.S.A. If they can help people become familiar with their products, extend their open hours in the morning, place their menu up where people can see it without walking up to the counter, accept credit cards, and maybe lower their price a little, they could do really well.
Visited several times. The Poutines are a must have (brings back memories of the "disco fries" we used to get late at night during our younger adult days....but much better). We also liked the beaver bites and beaver tails. Their honey lemon sorbet is a great palate cleanser between bites of the poutines. A definite must stop everytime we are on the boardwalk at night.
There is a Beaver Tails Pastry located at 906 Boardwalk, Seaside Heights,
New Jersey. The food is good. food Price is reasonable.
Great to see something new here in NJ. Hopefully this chain expands to the point where you see them in malls.
