After living in China for two years and recently making the move back to the states I was craving some spicy Sichuan food. Being in Connecticut (probably one the least adventurous areas on the culinary spectrum) I was shocked to find a legitimate Sichuan restaurant in the Hartford area.
Shu is by far the best authentic Sichuan food around. The dishes have the perfect degree of heat (Sichuan food tends to be spicy) and true to the style of the Sichuan region. If you're new to Sichuan food, you can't go wrong with the Dandan noodles 担担面, Spicy Chicken 辣子鸡, Poached Fish 水煮鱼, or the Double Cooked Pork 回锅肉 (All classics).
If you're looking for truly authentic and delicious Chinese food, this is the place to be.
The best Chinese food in Ct. if you like spice. Depending on the waiter the service can be excellent, or a bit off. Communication can break down not all the staff speak English well. Sometimes the service is superb, and other times not so much, but the food is always fantastic.
It’s not a typical take out type of Chinese restaurant. Shu is an authentic Chinese restaurant offering spicy Szechuan cuisine. To judge if it’s authentic, we normally see how much and how well they apply Sichuan peppercorns, a special spice with unique aroma that makes your mouth numb. Shu does it just right. Before the pandemic, this place was always crowded, especially on Friday and Saturday night. This year it is much quieter because of the impact of the virus. But every time I ate there, I felt safe. They keep good measures. The food is delicious as always.
Awesome food! Light and yummy.. Authentic chinese I'd say. White rice was so good, which is a basic thing other restaurants don't bother about. Now I know where to satisfy my chinese food cravings.
I live in Boston but my folks are in CT. I randomly stumbled upon this place a couple years ago. What a find! Shu is hands down one of the best (if not the best) Chinese restaurants I've been to. Now whenever I'm in the area, I make a point to grab lunch there. Amazing food, great service, awesome décor!
I came here for lunch and was excited for spicy Szechuan options. The menu was very large and had some great options. It is a little pricier, $15-25 a dish, so don't come here expecting $8 Chinese food. It was great however, and very fresh and delicious. I'd recommend the shredded duck and spicy dumplings.
Chinese food, yeah, quality stuff. great hospitality. the staff was very welcoming and observant.
Shu is not your typical Chinese take-out restaurant. It has an authentic Szechuan style, with Szechuan peppers and peppercorns. The food is amazing, and is very traditional. They also take the required measures during this pandemic as well. Although it’s a bit quiet during this time, I still feel safe and comfy dining there. I highly recommend this restaurant for everyone who’d like to try out authentic Szechuan food.
Outstanding! Especially if you like authentic Chinese food.
