Hen Of The Wood

After hearing about Hen of the Wood all year, I finally got a chance to go. The coolest part about this place is the setting, the dining room is a gorgeous old building overlooking a stream with a rustic atmosphere yet upscale atmosphere. That paired with seasonal food and impeccable service makes for a truly special experience. The food is good, but not life changing. My steak was a little undercooked and under seasoned, the beets were very average as well. Stick with the small plates, and you should be good. The maple tart I had for desert was perhaps the single most memorable desert I have had in recent memory. Truly delicious!

Beautiful space with a lovely daily menu. However the wait staff service didn’t give the touch that I expected for this price point. I enjoyed the skate cheeks and dessert, we chose the simple sorbet option. For the entree I was disappointed that the only vegetarian option was pasta. I had hoped for an original mushroom based dish or something ‘veggie creative.’

Finally able to get a reservation here, and we've been building up the hype about this place for years, so expectations were sky high. Candlelit and somber decor, super friendly staff. I can't believe the amount of food that tiny open kitchen can dish out. The food was amazing. Homemade coppa, hen of the wood mushrooms, and the best, most tender duck breast I ever had. It tasted like foie gras and it was heavenly. The chittara pasta with ramps was great too. I love that we didn't feel rushed to flip the table. Nice wine list too. Simply the best table in Vermont.

Lovely. Great food and service and great setup and ambient. The place is next to a river and falls in a beautiful setting. Inside it has this rustic design with dimmed lights. The food was delicious. From the hen of woods mushroom to cheeses and steaks and pastas and even great dark chocolate dessert. Everything was great.

This meal was so good that I kept the menu and framed it. Everything from the atmosphere, to the service, the drinks, the apps, Rabbit main (one of the best things I’ve ever eaten), the cheese and amaretto I had to finish the meal - perfection. It was a pleasure to eat here and it will remain a fond memory.

There are many great restaurants in Vermont; Hen of the Woods counts as one of them. Their restaurant in Burlington is likewise fantastic. The food menu is somewhat limited and the portions somewhat small. But the food is fantastic and the service perfect. The wine/beer/cocktail menu is the opposite: 4 pages long! You will find what you want and the wine list is extensive. The small plate items are indeed small so more of an appetizer. But have no fear when ordering! What ever you decide will be delicious and fresh. The decor is a renovated old mill and is neat and cozy. Nothing but good things to say and if you know me that's saying something! LOL! Enjoy!
