Originally concepted in early 2012, a 2014 storefront subsequently joined by location number two in Georgetown, it was as part of a three-stop trip to the Eastern half of D.C. that a visit was made to District Doughnut on 8th Street, entry to the cozy space along Barracks Row seeing each patron greeted with “Welcome to District Doughnut” by one of two friendly young staff members with a big smile as if they were truly loving every moment of a Sunday morning rush that saw a steady stream of traffic placing orders as large as three-dozen.

Following in the footsteps of Astro and now-shuttered GBD to bring handcrafted Artisan Doughnuts to the Nation’s Capital, Dunkin’s longtime foothold as difficult a challenge as would be launching a similar business in Tim Horton’s dominated Toronto, District looks to buck the trend by working with nothing but top quality ingredients and making everything from scratch each day in the kitchen, the menu changing seasonally and recently turning over to fall with additional monthly specials further adding intrigue for regulars.

Part clever and part classic, those looking for a simple Glazed Ring for less than a buck probably better off looking elsewhere but anyone who values creativity and quality ingredients likely to be impressed by nearly a dozen choices ranging $2.50 to $3.75, it was after short perusal that the decision was made to order six Doughnuts, the Pumpkin Crème Brulee torched to order before being placed in a box that was taken elsewhere for consumption.

Best  known for their Brown Butter and Salted Dulce de Leche selections, Executive Pastry Chef Christine Schaefer’s first two menu creations still topping month-to-month sales thanks to the former’s excellent balance of yeasted Dough, Sugar and mellow Frosting while the latter packs a creamy scoop of Caramel into a fluffy pocket, it was with these two options that a tasting of District Doughnut’s goods got underway, the follow-up of October’s Sweet Potato Pie proving similar to the Dulce de Leche in terms of its construction and arguably even better thanks to the nicely spiced center and mashed Potatoes in the Dough.

Showing good diversity in terms of their collection by offering both raised and Cake Doughnuts it was with the linger of Candied Pecans still lingering on the palate that bites were taken of the Maple Butter Pecan followed by Caramel Apple Strudel, the base of each good but a little more dry than would be ideal despite good toppings while the aforementioned Pumpkin Pie, now cooled back to room temperature, was similar in flavor to the Sweet Potato but with a pleasant textural contrast from the burnt Sugar.

We’ve been going here since they first opened and just had Dulce de Leche and Brown Butter doughnuts as standard. Love the seasonal flavors to keep things fun and interesting. LOVE that the sufganyiot are now available outside of Chanukah. The only downside is that when we got them in February, they were dry and definitely not as good as when they were a special item. Service is usually slow despite and they sell out of flavors throughout the day. So get there early for best selection.

The donuts were lovely! Great place. A tad on the expensive side, and I only say that because I've had donuts with similar flavors for less. I would still highly recommend this place!

Fun and interesting flavors of donuts! We got a berry donut which was nice and sweet. And the everything bagel donut was... interesting for sure. Basically a bagel but in donut form. We got another one that had chocolate on it that was nice. Lots of different flavors to choose from!

I loved my experience at District Donut!! Very calm and welcoming environment with a delicious donut and amazing Compass cold brew. One of the only places selling coffee around Eastern Market on Mondays and it’s worth it. Hope to become a regular during my time here; staff is very friendly and helpful! Check them out! 🍩

Visited during the pandemic.. District donuts never disappoint! I have been to their stores at the wharf and union market.. quality is always there! I was told their brown butter is one of the most popular one. Can't believe I haven't tried it before.. So Naturally, I had to try it. It was good! I also got Their strawberry glazed donut which is also delicious. Good covid precaution at this store- they only allow one customer in the store at a time Only down side is the parking but I guess that's a universal issue for dc!

This is a pretty good, artisanal donut shop. They have quite unique flavors, and rotate them seasonally. They only have yeast risen donuts, so sorry to all of my fellow cake donut lovers. The texture is quite soft and fluffy, but I wish they were a tad bit more dense or thick to hold up after your first bite. Their salted dulce de leche filled donut was incredible! It was the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and buttery. All the others I tried were average at best. I wouldn't deter anybody from giving District Doughnut a try, but there are better donut shops in the DC area.

I would give District a 5 star review but I was disappointed to see their offerings were not inline with the menu they had displayed on their webpage, so I dropped a star. Aside from that their stuff is fantastic and I was able to find other items to my liking without the two doughnuts I had hoped to get. The staff were friendly and the cinnamon roll was MASSIVE. Make sure you check the hours for the location you are going to because it seems each of their locations go by different hourz.

A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE! I had the key lime pie doughnut from the summer menu, and my partner had the fluffernutter from the regular year round menu. OMG, the key lime doughnut was delicious. It even had key lime pie filling! Yum! The fluffernutter was peanut butter with a fluff filled center...sooooo good.
