Udipi Cafe

This is one of my favorite restaurants in South Florida, and indisputably my favorite Indian restaurant in Florida. When I am working in Sunrise I make an effort to visit here for their lunch buffet, and I have been here for dinner twice. The buffet is about ten dollars per head and is much more reasonably priced than the regular dinner menu, but your options will be limited by the staff's imagination for that day. The cuisine is South Indian, and as a lifelong carnivore, I am pleasantly surprised to enjoy their entirely vegetarian menu. I salivate just thinking about their saag paneer, and their curried lentils and channa aloo are amazing. Dosa are freshly made and usually complimentary with the meal. Their arrival during the meal depends on what time of day you arrived, and how busy things are at the restaurant. The owner and most of his staff are pretty great, and have been known to whip up small batches of dishes that are not on the menu or the buffet for regulars. They have had a few problems with being fully staffed at all times, as they had to reduce employee hours when nearby Motorola laid off much of their staff. They were a primary customer and the Cafe suffered for the loss of their large lunchtime crowd. As a result your waiter may also be your chef and your cashier, and if things get suddenly and unexpectedly busy, you may be in for a wait. Still the food is totally worth any wait.

A vegan/vegetarian only menu. The lady that took my to go order was friendly and invited me to come back to try their buffet. What I ordered was very good and flavorful. It was basically only chic peas in a sauce of herbs and spices. Personally I thought it was pricey for only being chic peas but when I looked up other restaurant menus they had the same price point. There were these whipped fried potato items I also ordered as appetizers that were also flavorful and amazing.
