Nice Joint. I first have to start off by saying I'm by now means a BBQ connoisseur but I do have an idea on what makes good eating.
I'm new to South Bend and was very interested in sampling the local eatery hot-spots. So after a few google searches, I found that Urbanspoon had the best reviews of the best places to eat in town.
I'm a graduate student so I live just south of campus and noticed another BBQ joint just around the corner from where I live on South Bend Ave. Another google search shows that this place is also a Frankies BBQ except it's called, "World Famous BBQ." You can imagine my confusion. So I called the Washington St location and they told me it's the same business except different owners. Oddly enouth, they really didnt seem to claim the other location as their own. I thought it was little wierd, but then again, what the heck do I really know?
Anyway, I tried the rib tips at both locations with different results. The Washinton St location was much more flavorful and tender, while the South Bend Ave location was moretougher and not quite as tasty. The fries are good and the portions are enough to fill even the heartiest of eaters. My total for the rib tips with tax was $10.38 at Washington St and $10.00 at the South Bend Ave spot.
The comments I've read all have posting dates from 2010 so my impression is that the place is getting better, especially the Washington St location. All of the constrution mentioned in earlier feedback has been completed and looking pretty nice inside. I think it's a decent mom-n-pop shop (my favorite). I really want to say the South Bend location is hit or miss, but I've only been there once and can't say that.
In my opitnion I would give the Washington St shop an 8.75 rating on a scale of 10, while I rate the South Bend Ave location a 7. Service is fast and friendly with a courtesous staff and big smiles all around and both spots. I plan to visit them each again and go from there. I HIGHLY recommend the Washington St spot but only recommend the South Bend restaurant if you're not near the other location and what some really good BBQ.
Hopes this helps.
Best Sauce!. Frankie's is the best carry out ribs and tips. Can't stand ribs ANY where else after eating theres for more than a decade. The drive home is always interupted by a stop to taste, that aroma grabs your mouth and throat and will drive you crazy until you get a taste. Not a sweet sauce that everyone else thinks is barbeque. Don't ever change that sauce guys!!!
Rib tips are the specialty, and they are mostly good, however as much as I've eaten there, the quality if the tips varies. The sauce is what makes them great, and they have good thick cut fries to go with it. The location near Olive is better than the one on south bend ave. Not much on the inside, but they stay pretty busy and for a reason; it's good eating!
Good eat`N. I have had some good BBQ and this is really good, but I have only one bad thing to say about it and that is, you have to go at the right time and have the right team working that day. But I tell you what!!! It will hit the spot anytime you have the boys over for football and beer.
Haven't been able to get better rib tips anywhere else. When I come home to visit I don't even see my momma before I pick some up. The aroma outside the restaurant will be enough to convince you to try. Really wish we had one of these in San Diego. Not to mention, the people are wholesome AF
I love Frankie’s Bbq I’ve been eating here my whole just and this is just one of those places you must eat from when you in or even just passing through South Bend, In!!
Ordered the rib tips. They were excellent! Great food and service!
BEST!! Can't compare it to any other place, because there are no other places to compare Frankies BBQ too because they are that GOOD! Great service, Great workers, Great cooks. Professional. This family has to be VERY proud of themselves for being so successful and so prideful in what they do. And what they do is make the BEST BBQ sauce and Rib Tips around.
only place in South bend to get legitimate ribs. Fat tip dinner was more than I could eat. Manager came and checked that our meal was good.
