We live in Florida and was up north on our way back home .. we craved soul food and let me say this place did not disappoint. The Mac n cheese whiting fish was so delicious 3 bites in my husband had the ribs , oxtails eggrolls collard greens and green beans and i sent my husband back in to order another plate to take home. Although we are almost 6 hrs away.. I would def be taking another drive.
First time here. It's cafeteria style, which I love. I don't eat meat, so I got the veggie plate. I got the collards, cabbage, red rice and yams. Tried the peach cobbler just because. Everything was excellent. I wish they had some beans (blackeyes, pinto, limas, red). But, I'm not complaining.
The pretty young girl who got my food was very polite in explaining things. She was very kind and and friendly. I very much appreciate positive people to go with positive vibes.
I ate in. Tsbles are even set up loke cafeteria style. Works for me. Clean.
Great chill casual place. They had 90s videos on the TV. Works for me. Hold on some Earth Wind and Fire just came on the TV. Now we talkin.
My recommendation, get on off that I-95 and get yourself on in here for some good dinner (or lunch). Something for everyone here.
I walked in and the food caught my eyes first. The macaroni looked dry and that made me nervous because it's an important factor in soul food for me. I questioned the fried chicken and waited the 15 minutes to receive it fresh.
I felt like the woman serving the food was nice nasty. Let me explain, she was a bit short even with the other customers and she didn't listen. I repeated myself more than once and so did a couple other customers. I asked her, “which one is better your sweet tea or lemonade?” (they mention on the menu that they’re handmade and homemade) She responded, “I mean it’s just a tea bag and it’s just country time lemonade” her lack of enthusiasm made me not get a drink at all.
Anyways,
The Mac surprisingly tasted way better than it looked, the yams came in second place but did have a bit too much cinnamon reminding me more of sweet potato pie but the collard greens (which has been my favorite since birth) was the biggest disappointment. The cornbread was dry (thus it sitting out so long) and I had high hopes for the fried chicken but the flavor fell short to me.
After taking a bite of each side Kenneth came down the stairs through the door and I recognized his picture from Yelp. I asked him was he the owner and also asked could I trade all these sides back in for a side of rice and gravy. He asked me what was wrong but gladly exchanged my food and gave me a slice of pound cake on the house after apologizing more than once.
He came out and made small talk with me while he ate and then I tried the pound cake....
THE POUND CAKE!!!
...It took me back to my grandmas kitchen table and flooded my heart with a child like sensation. My eyes started to form the happy tears and at that moment Kenneth and the pound cake saved the day for me.
So while I don't know if Sisters of the New South is better than Genevas I will say that I had a special moment at both of these establishments. I'll definitely be back during the start of their lunch hours to see if the taste hits different because I really want to give 5-stars for Kenneth and the pound cake alone!!!
Food was awesome. Soul rolls were delicious. Fried shrimp and chicken were both excellent. Every side was delicious. Service was very good. Not a bad thing to say about this place except you may have to wait in line.
My mom and I have been eating here for years! Some days are better than others and I guess that’s to be expected. Today, the food is delicious. However, the smothered pork chops gravy could have been browned more, but tasty. You do get three sides with your meal and you have good choices of vegetables, you get your monies worth. Healthy portions that can be two meals. Also, the place is always clean and I love that! The staff is very helpful! Shout out to Johnathan for being so polite and patient with me!
They have the only pork chops I've ever liked as much as my mom's lol. What better recommendation can you give a place than that? Friendly service, tasty food, and very generous portions. You won't leave hungry!
Had been looking forward to eating here for months when I planned our trip and was not disappointed.
Steam table style meat plus 3. I had smothered pork chops over red rice with okra and tomatoes and Lima beans. The chops were fork tender and mmmm. Excellent gravy to go on the rice. Okra was amazing and kinda sweet
My gf had the baked chicken lunch special. 2 pieces and sides. Great value. Chicken had good flavor but she shoulda got dark. She loved the collards and Mac.
The peach cobbler isn't something I eat but was the reason I brought her here. She loved it
The soul rolls are inventive with collard and rice egg roll style with thai chili sauce. Can't go wrong.
My favorite thing I had was the okra could not eat it fast enough.
Kenny and his staff are super nice and might stop by our last morning for breakfast.
Parking on site
Was recommended this by a local for the best soul food around and it DID NOT disappoint. Food was delicious and staff was super friendly. Lunch special was $7.99 and enough to take some home
Food was awesome. Haven't eaten here in 8 years. Heard about negative reviews but it is just as good as I remember. Staff seem a bit irritated but if we'd fill up the tip jar at checkout that would change. 😋
Steak and gravy, smother pork chops, and kids baked chicken dishes were all satisfying. I tried each side and my favorite were the greens and Loma beans. Though the Mac and cheese didn't appear super cheesy, it was seasoned well and quite satisfying. We washed everything down with lemonade, tea and some good Ole banana pudding. Truly enjoyed my visit.
