I am exceptionally happy that Matterhorn exists and I look forward to taking friends and family there in the future. However, the food itself is just fine. The reason it still gets four stars from me is that the atmosphere is INCREDIBLE. They had the entire bar built in Switzerland and shipped over and it shows. There is a tiny train village outside the window. You can sit in a gondola. It is incredible. Again, not the place my wife and I will be going for date night but we were already scheming the many people who would enjoy it for snacks and drinks to just soak in the atmosphere.
A gem from old San Francisco. The wood paneling is imported from Switzerland. Ditto the decor. They have exclusive French and Swiss cheeses and bake their own sourdough for the fondue. There’s also pickled vegetables, apple slices and pretzels for the fondue. Authentic and affordable wines. Patient and attentive staff. Step in, get lost, and forget you’re on Van Ness. This Palace of fondue should be recognized alongside House of Prime Rib as Old SF. I hope it remains as sleepy and intimate for another 40 years!
Wonderful ambiance, helpful service, and great food!
Tucked away on a cute corner of Van Ness, this restaurant offers great Swiss dishes including four distinct cheese fondues.
The interior is an extremely cute Alpine village with beautiful wood paneling and much Swiss paraphernalia. It brings an exotic angle to the place.
Definitely recommend!
The authentic atmosphere at this place and the start is very friendly and helpful.
Best of all... The food is really yummy. The signature cheese fondue but also the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes... Really really yummy.
Fantastic experience. Got the gondola for our anniversary dinner celebration. Got the raclette, onion soup, beef and cheese fondue, and s’mores chocolate fondue. Excellent service, to the point it scraping the bottom of our fondue pot so we could get the crusty cheese. Delicious meal (better seasoned and yummier than the Melting Pot). Great ambiance with the little details of the wooden walls and the mountain out the window with the train. Thank you for making this special!
A super delicious and unique spot in San Francisco! When we walked in we were a little nervous because of the strong cheesy flavor. But after we got our cheese fondue and beef fondue, we couldn’t be happier. I really recommend sticking to the fondues. The beef was incredibly soft and tender. Absolutely melts in your mouth. The cheese fondue is also fantastic! Next time we will ask for more bread and fewer potatoes. Overall a wonderful, romantic, and fun date spot! Also keto and low carb friendly because they have pickled vegetables you can dip in the cheese and the beef fondue.
Delicious fondue! First time visiting since the new management, but it felt like the same restaurant in all the important ways. Menu was a little less interesting and was more expensive than I remember. The Heimat cheese fondue was super tasty. I really enjoyed the onion soup (think french onion); there was some real work on the broth. I'd recommend to the chef to add a few fondues and dishes outside of the traditional Swiss mold, it would really enhance the menu.
The place was packed while we were there, especially for a weeknight. Service was friendly but clearly taxed and could have been a bit better.
We went to Matterhorn for dinner on a weekday and were very impressed with the ambiance ,the service and the food. To begin with the ambiance is very cozy yet upbeat. They have a gondola with a table for 2 ,which is one of the many intricate cute things at this restaurant. The wall decor and typical swiss artifacts sprawled in the wooden dining area gives it a very authentic swiss like feeling. Our server ,Oliver was very friendly and made perfect suggestions and recommendations. We ordered their moitie moitie fondue, it had an amazing taste though the kirsch was a bit too strong flavored for me. I guess next time, I will order the fondue without the kirsch (that's an option they offer). The Raclette came with swiss and French cheese along with mostarda, perfect combo of sweet and savory. Our favorite was the beef fondue with thyme potatoes, very flavorful and quite filling. For dessert we had their homemade ice cream and their todays bakery special, pie with cranberry ice cream. They have a good wine selection, our favorite was their dessert wine, orange blossom Moscato. I would like to mention their manager, Sheila, who took the time out to talk to us and made us feel welcomed.
We will surely go back here to try other fondues. I highly recommend this place for your cheese cravings.
This is an Old San Francisco gem. The wood paneling is from Switzerland. They have a good selection of French wines. The fondue choices are excellent. The Pork Schnitzel is crisp and tender. Great place for couples and for a family outing with kids over 8 who can dip their own bread or pickled vegetables in the fondue. Ordered a fondue for two and two mains for four people and had left overs. Plates are meant for sharing.
We come here 3-4 times per year. The best cheese fondue in the Bay Area. They make bread daily. High quality cheeses. Excellent selection of wine. They also make a decent raclette. Highly recommended! A reservation is advised on weekend nights.
