I am exceptionally happy that Matterhorn exists and I look forward to taking friends and family there in the future. However, the food itself is just fine. The reason it still gets four stars from me is that the atmosphere is INCREDIBLE. They had the entire bar built in Switzerland and shipped over and it shows. There is a tiny train village outside the window. You can sit in a gondola. It is incredible. Again, not the place my wife and I will be going for date night but we were already scheming the many people who would enjoy it for snacks and drinks to just soak in the atmosphere.

A gem from old San Francisco. The wood paneling is imported from Switzerland. Ditto the decor. They have exclusive French and Swiss cheeses and bake their own sourdough for the fondue. There’s also pickled vegetables, apple slices and pretzels for the fondue. Authentic and affordable wines. Patient and attentive staff. Step in, get lost, and forget you’re on Van Ness. This Palace of fondue should be recognized alongside House of Prime Rib as Old SF. I hope it remains as sleepy and intimate for another 40 years!

Wonderful ambiance, helpful service, and great food! Tucked away on a cute corner of Van Ness, this restaurant offers great Swiss dishes including four distinct cheese fondues. The interior is an extremely cute Alpine village with beautiful wood paneling and much Swiss paraphernalia. It brings an exotic angle to the place. Definitely recommend!
