Cool bar. Nice vibe. Very friendly bar staff. Take care to remember ID for the doorman. Food is supplied by a sort of pop up place outside the premises, and is really good quality, and you have to actually leave the building to place the order. Trouble is you could easily have come in earlier with your colleagues for beers, before the doorman had started work, popped out later to order food, only to find the doorman now wants to see ID. Would be a shame to have to break up the party so unceremoniously!
This spot was our local watering hole back when I moved to San Francisco back in 2011.
SUCH A COOL SPOT.
The box burger next door used to have some vegan options, but I think they’ve decreased the options (last I looked), although they do have a rotating menu.
Get “the special”, a shot and a beer — great place to hang out even though the neighborhood has changed.
Just dropped off Pridmore Prickpickle at the Radio Flyer there on Howard street and he gave me 8 big dollar bills, and said lunch is on me. 8 dollars! I said, are you sure! I only gave you a ride into the city from Napa, WOW! The lunch options with that 8 bucks in hand were racing through my head faster than a speeding bullet. My first thought was Tommy's Joint but it's always packed, then I remembered the Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen was right around the corner! An easy decision, the grilled cheese sandwich is one of the best in the city, and their soup is amazing.
5 stars all day long. ☆☆☆☆☆
Cool local dive bar in SoMa with amazing food!
I came here for the first time and I love the vibe of this dive bar. Bikes on the ceilings, World Series Jerseys on the walls, and stickers plastered all over the restroom.
What I loved most was the food!! I got the Box Burger during my lunch break and added an egg on top. Perfect brunch food for what it’s worth. Then I added a “Donkey Show” special to the mix: Modelo beer with a shot of Milagro Tequila. What a way to start my day!
The staff were also super nice and gave me the best recommendations on what to order. Shout out to Levi behind the bar and Joey the owner! Made my first impression a memorable one. You gotta check it out.
Great food and service! The pork belly potato skins with quail eggs are really good!
Hands down the BEST burger in town. I've been searching for two years and this place has easily the best burger I've found in that time. On top of that they have affordable prices and top notch service! Everytime I go here the people are great and the food is delicious!
If you love dive bars like I do, this place DEFINITELY should be on your "To Visit" list if you're in San Francisco. It has a kitchen serving food, but the pickup window is outside on the street. 2 pool tables and a jukebox will provide entertainment while downing decently priced drinks (lower than most bars) while staring at those photos stapled to the wall behind the bar (NSFW photos) of real former patrons. Dog friendly as long as the dog is friendly. Oh, and BTW, the food is both good AND cheap!
Greetings, fellow traveler! I recently stopped by Tempest Bar & Box Kitchen in San Francisco and it was a delightful experience. The bar selection was impressive, with a variety of local beers and cocktails. The menu had a great selection of bar bites and entrees, with some unique twists. The atmosphere was casual and inviting, with a vintage feel. But what really made the experience memorable was the quality of service - friendly and attentive staff who made sure every customer was taken care of. Highly recommend for a fun night out in San Francisco!
On a bustling Friday fight night, the place was PACKED for UFC 285 with star Shavkat Rakhmonov’s win over Geoff Neal, Valentina Shevchenko’s win over Alexa Grasso, and Jon Jones’ submission win over Ciryl Gane.
Despite the bustle indoors, I was able to get a beer quickly from their attentive bartenders. Be aware, that one Almanac Double IPA cost me $10+ before tip.
There were plenty of tv’s throughout the establishment, so I headed to the back which housed an incredible little food oasis called the Hidden Spot. Here I ordered a MASSIVE spicy chicken sandwich called the Firefighter. At $17, it was pricy, but dare I say it was worth it? The habanero sauce and jalapeños made my nose run, but did not overwhelm the flavor of the sandwich. My buddy ordered their five pack of spicy Buffalo wings for $10. These were large wings and the Buffalo sauce was delicious, and I hate Buffalo sauce. Their sauce traded flavor for the traditional vinegar bombs like many Buffalo sauces.
Beyond the kitchen, there is a truly hidden spot, a small patio area with a large screen television, surrounded by apartment buildings. Despite the rain, the staff had hand towels available to wipe down the tables.
The restrooms were clean, but not large, offering one urinal and one toilet.
Very cool bar, with an outdoor food window. It's not a big deal because they give you a pager so you can go back to your drink and wait for it to be ready. I had the chicken tacos, they were very excellent. The bar staff is also very friendly, and the draft beer is among the best-priced in town.
