I love this place. A great selection of beers, delectable food, and always good tunes on the sound system. It's a local place with local ambiance. Brick walls, hardwood tables, and great conversation will ensue.

The chef's menu with wine pairings was amazing. Service was considerate, timely, and very informative. The peanut butter semifreddo was delicious!!

A memorable meal...a dining experience. Not only did I have the best seat in the house (at the bar in front of the kitchen so I could watch the chefs at work) but I had one of the best meals of my life (trust me- I have eaten at Jean George, Saison, and HerbFarm). I partook in the Chef's tasting menu because it looked so amazingly innovative and for the price it couldn't be beat ($90 for 7 courses and wine pairings? sign me up!).
First course was an amuse bouche of raw red snapper with a touch of lime juice and roe. Great, light way to start off the meal. Next course was chocolate covered foie gras balls with asian pear- I could have eaten 10 of these balls! The mild sweetness and bitterness of the dark chocolate with the rich savoriness of the liver was insanely delicious.
Following that was the 'salad' course consisting of beets, goat cheese, and watercress (I think- it was a very light micro green so I could be mistaken). The juxtaposition of earthy beets with the sweet, creaminess of the goat cheese made for a perfect dish and the best part- it was served on a piece of slate. 10 points for presentation!
Following that was a crab and sea urchin risotto. Oh. My. God. It was salty, it was creamy, it was rich, it was incredible. Okay, I admit, it was a little too salty for a perfect dish (though salt is a very personal taste) but that didn't stop me from eating all of it. Following that was a dish full of sweetbread, asian pear (bringing it back in for a full circle of flavors- nice), and celery sitting in an utterly decadent sauce. I don't remember what it was (it was definitely made of offal and finished with cream) but I actually took my spoon and scrapped the dish clean. Yup, I would have licked it if I were home.
Next was a fruity sorbet. I don't remember what it was exactly but it cleansed the pallet the way it was meant to. Plus it was served in a coupe glass which is just so suitably pretty.
Final course was, I believe, Commonwealth's version of a deconstructed snickers bar. Peanut butter semifreddo covered in a ganache on top a caramel drizzle with frozen popcorn. Wow, so classic of combination contrived in such a way that it was beautiful- I will always remember this dessert.
I honestly think this is such an incredible restaurant for an incredible price. No one should miss this food because of money-- treat yourself and make a reservation here today-- Commonwealth truly embodies it's name.

All Around Great. Ate here with friends and shared almost everything on the menu. Everything was terrific, particularly the gnocchi which I dream about. The dishes were creative without being fussy. The dishes are small but not really a small plates place. It was a little hard to figure out how much to order. We shared several appetizers and then each ordered a an entree (small) and a couple desserts. It was plenty and cost the same as if we'd ordered a normal set of courses (moderate). Service was also good, attentive but not too much. They also have a parking lot which is unusual and a real bonus if you come across town or from the east bay as we did. My only complaint is my usual complaint - too noisy for the food quality. A bit of acoustic treatment on the ceiling would dampen things a bit without destroying the lively feeling.

Simply Lovely. Dined here on 9/19 for our 7th anniversary. We are new to San Francisco (from Seattle), and this was an amazing introduction to the little gem restaurants the city has to offer.
Our table was not ready upon arrival, so we were treated to complementary glasses of sparkling wine and an appetizer (rosted peppers with goat cheese and rose petals) by the spunky and engaging gal behind the bar. Our 5 item dinner consisted of a dreamy chilled squash soup flavored with vadouvan and a perfectly fried squash blossom; marrow and pork stuffed squid that I will dream about for months, a cloud-like corn custard topped with uni; perfectly roasted hen with spot prawns in a chocolate infused sauce; and tender, savory hangar steak with enoki mushrooms and wheat grass.
The decor is sparse and refined with a touch of the organic, staff were attentive but not intrusive, and prices are more than reasonable.
I would highly recommend this little spot to any SF newcomer or native.

We celebrated my birthday there and it was my second time since a long time. The quality is outstanding. I love the fish dishes, it melts in your mouth and it’s ultra gastronomic! It’s very reasonable compared to other Michelin Star restaurants too for foodies !!! It’s a business casual atmosphere, down to earth feel! Love it!

We had the extended chef's tasting menu (did not order drink pairings). Each item was unique to the next, very unique combinations of textures and ingredients. We really enjoyed the sashimi fish items, the salad and the duck dish. Almost all items on the tasting menu were great, reason why only 4 stars is the flavors were not that bold, not so enticing that we are craving to have the food again. We also ordered the Jasmine tea which came in a small teapot but the waitresses were generous enough to continue refilling our pot all throughout the meal.

Food was delicious and service was friendly and helpful. Their staff have great wine knowledge and the mix of classic and offbeat pairings worked well. Fit for foodies and wine nerds, but enjoyable for everyone willing to try some new things.

If you're looking for an experience with food you should try this place. We got the Chef's extended tasting menu which had 12 courses (I think, definitely more than 7). They ranged from hot to warm to cold dishes on the temperature scale. The last three courses were desserts. Every course was unique and pleasantly presented. Depending on your preference you'll like some more than the others. The staff was very courteous. Beware the extended tasting menu is a lot of food! so if you have the appetite go for it, you'll be pleased. The place had a full bar but we didn't get any drinks as we had to drive back.

In an unassuming spot, with its own parking lot, which in the mission...feels fancy already. Was an amazing meal of well executed dishes that felt homey without feeling ostentatious. Misread a couple of things on the menu like "beet tartare" v beef tartare and "squid noodles" v squid ink noodles but was then pleasantly surprised by what I was presented. Highlights: geoduck and smoked trout, which we were lucky to be able to order off the tasting menu. Looking forward to coming back someday to try the extended tasting menu w non-alcoholic beverage pairing :)

Small intimate dining room great for a casual or semi formal meal, or you might elect to eat at the bar. I chose to do the tasting menu, and added the uni dish to my menu. I had asked the server to suggest and addition, between the uni or truffled dumplings.. And was pleasantly surprised when they threw in the dumplings as a complementary extra later on. The tasting menu is an absurdly reasonably $80. Service starts with home made potato chips, and 2 amuses. The first amuse was mind blowing good and really prepared me for an awesome and exciting meal. Bright, assertive and commanding attention, superb. I was told that they never repeat dishes, so it's pointless to talk about the food... The style was however modern, exciting and thoughtful.. Leading to a throughly enjoyable meal. Definitely on my repeat list. I wish they had a more comprehensive wine by the glass list, but considering the size of the restaurant, understandable.

We had a splendid evening at Commonwealth. The food was sublime and beautiful to look at. The staff were attentive, welcoming and not overly present. The uniqueness of the dishes and the blend of flavors is executed with near perfection. Finally, the price is quite reasonable, relative to peer restaurants. I thoroughly recommend Commonwealth!

We had the tasting menu on a Saturday evening and had a lovely time. The service was excellent and there was the right amount of time in-between courses. I'd recommend the wine pairing, it really made a difference.

My girlfriend and I shared 5 dishes from the a la carte menu and desserts afterwards. It was a great dining experience and definitely worth the price. The menu itself was interesting -- arranged not in the usual appetizer-main-dessert order, but by temperature. While all courses were innovative and we'll presented, my favorites were the black trumpet mushrooms with soft cooked egg and the duck confit. It was impressive how much effort they had put into these otherwise normal-looking dish names. The service was also professional and efficient.
