We arrived at six with a party of four. Good thing we did because the place filled up immediately afterward. The service was attentive, courteous, and prompt. We had an assortment of appetizers - Aushak, Bulanee Katchalu, and Pakawra-e-Badenjan - all were excellent! Likewise for the mains where we had two kabobs and two Kabuli Pallaw (the Afghan national dish). The portions were huge and the food was so good we wanted to eat it all but couldn't! Highly recommend this place. I'm definitely going back!! Almost forgot ... ditto for the desserts and cardamom tea!
The food never disappoints! We love love love Kabul! The owners are very friendly as well! Good portion size and the price is right!!!!
Be prepared for a wait, especially on the weekend, because everyone in town seems to know how good the food is. The staff is especially friendly, with big smiles and welcoming greetings. The menu is large and a bit daunting unless you’re familiar with traditional Afghan food. But the staff will help you out. Lots of great curries and kebabs but many other choices. Don’t miss the desserts: elephant ears (incredibly thin sheets of fragile crisp pastry generously dusted with sugar) and a creamy pudding. Prices are reasonable.
Excellent food and service. They could expand their drink menu to include other alcohol apart from wine. Loved their Burlingame location and also love San Carlos one. Will definitely go back.
Great Afghan food. It appears formal at first glance but actually very relaxed, caring service from people who want you to return. I would characterize Afghan food as sort of a cross between Indian and Greek, though that's probably not accurate. They get steady business but never too busy, though the meals are fine meals that take a little time to prepare so don't go in a rush. Great place to sit down and relax for a top notch meal in a semi-formal setting.
Their food is just so very tasty.. 1. Yes, it is in a strip mall.
2. Yes, besides a couple of little touches and white tablecloths, the ambiance is basically a big room with tables.
3. Friendly old school service.
4. MASHAWA (Lentil Soup) - This is earthy heaven in a bowl. I can't say enough good things about it.
5. KABAB-E-GAW (charbroiled beef on a skewer) - The seasonings and herbs they use are simply and amazing. The meat is always tender. There is nothing particularly fancy about it. But it is an amazing plate of food.
6. KABAB-E-MURGH (charbroiled chicken on a skewer) - Mmmm, pretty much the same as I said about the beef. Oh, I forgot the smokey like goodness that comes from the charbroiling.
7. I have friends that swear by the KABAB-E-GOUSFAND (charbroiled lamb on skewer).
8. This is just a great dining experience. It is anchored by fantastic food.
Fabulous!. We love this restaurant, and eat there at least a couple of times a month, as well as always taking out of town guests. The food is delicious, the staff very friendly and the atmosphere a delight! You would never suspect finding such a wonderful restaurant if you only looked at the outside (in a strip mall along El Camino), but do go!
Best Middle Eastern Food in Area. This is a great Afghan restaurant. I travel the country and have visited others, and this is one of the best. The food is flavorful and ample. The lamb dishes (kabob/chops) excellent, and the side dishes/appetizers outstanding. This is a great value for the money and definitely one I will return to and recommend to others.
Ready to go back!. All of the great tastes of Afghan cuisine. This place is a must visit when we're in the area. The staff is friendly and fast and the food is absolutely fabulous.
Wonderful healthful food and good service. Vegetarian dishes are the best anywhere, and the portions are generous. For a heavenly flavor, try the challa kadu (pumpkin) over brown rice!
Kadu and Kabobs. I really like Afghan food, and this is the best Afghan restaurant I've found so far. Even the chicken kabob is moist and flavorful. But I've gotten in the habit of ordering the vegetarian sampler, because it has such great tastes. I have to fight to keep others from eating the Kadu (pumpkin with yogurt sauce) right off my plate! The Sabsi (spinach) and Gulpi (cauliflower) are also great. I hate eggplant, so I can't comment on it. My SO always gets the beef.
I met up with A at a nondescript strip mall in San Carlos, home of Kabul Afghan Cuisine. I’ve never had afghan cuisine before. I mean I’ve had middle eastern, but I never knew what kind of middle eastern. Can I just lump all middle eastern food into gener
Every dish tastes good!
I highly recommend the lamb chops, I think they marinated them to elevate the flavor.
The rice and bread are too good to miss.

Excellent food. Excellent experience. Kabul Afghan Cuisine is a place I would come back to anytime. For myself. And with friends. I can't believe it took me so long to finally make my first visit!?!
Lamb chop skewers, kantoo ( sweet pumpkin) and chef appetizer platter. So good, if you want something different come here. The meat is well seasoned and tender. I love charcoal grill marks on my kabobs
Very good taste of the dishes we ordered. We had lamb rack, lamb chop and chicken. If you are a lamb lover, you should definitely want to give it a try. If you like hot spicy food, you may ask for their green spicy sauce that go with you email.
All review stars for the family owned and operated business (with the room for improvement).
Overall excellent experience of authentic cuisine, beautiful, traditional restaurant set up, clean and renovated vanities, welcoming hospitality of the family owned business.
From the moment we have stepped into the doors, noticed the amount of people during Sunday after lunch hour and calm vibe of service. With a few jokes and smiles we were set it by the window and very quickly served.
Food was served juicy, tender (one piece of beef kebab a bit failed and had to go back) and with the distinct, not over spiced flavor. We even got treated with something extra as an appetizer sampler. Would highly recommend lamb kebab and lamb stew.
Enjoyed and will definitely be back with any occasion.
Good food, service and very delicious food .
We did order, lamb, chicken, salmon and prawns , everything was too good.
Very tasty food. Service is top notch. Helpful staff. Recommend!
Amazing! Don't miss it.Been going to Kabul San Carlos and Sunnyvale for 25+ yrs. Have introduced many friends to this wonderful cuisine. Service is great and most every dish is fabulous. Mantu and aushak are my favorite appetizers. Rack of lamb, chicken and jumbo shrimp kebabs are amazing. Don't forget to order a side of Kadu, extra yogurt, and green chutney to spice it up!
