I drop by to get some food on a busy Sunday. The staff was very friendly. And my order was served very fast. My tacos were hot and freshly made. I ordered a Barbacoa taco and a fajita taco, the tacos were hot and fresh and delicious

Outstanding! Portions are massive. No understatement.. Plate sizes are 12x8 and are packed with very tasty food! The chicken biscuit smothered in real sausage gravy was outstanding! The chicken perfectly cooked and super juicy, the gravy is the best sausage gravy I have had in a restaurant! Hands down!! The nachos were full of beef and completely satisfying. There isn't anything in this menu that 2 adults couldn't split and be completely full at the
end of the meal. The decor can turn some people away and if you're one of those type of people you don't deserve the goodness that is sold at this restaurant.. This is my new and forever go to place!

When someone calls a place a “joint” they must be talking about Grumpy’s! And what an awesome joint it is!!! We ordered the chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and the enchilada plate. Holy smokes the portions are huge! Note in the CFS photo that that is the LUNCH portion - obviously more than enough for most even at dinner. But double the protein and you have the CFC meal shown.

We mixed the sides so that we could try the fries as well as the onion rings. The former was chunky, crisp and great while the latter ranked up there with the best rings I’ve ever had. The steak is covered with a brown gravy and the chicken with a white gravy. Both are very good but the flavor edge goes to the brown. I may ask for it on my chicken next time… just because! The meals started with a small salad.

The enchiladas were enormous (of course) and the meat was nicely seasoned through and through. As an interesting addition they add MORE meat on top of the enchiladas… just because! :)

The staff is friendly and welcoming, service is quick, and the place - sorry, joint - is just fun to be in. Great food, huge portions, and the very reasonable prices make tremendous value. What more could you ask for? Perfection!

Grumpy's? Me too!. I probably screwed up by ordering a hamburger in a mexican food place but that's what I was in the mood for and this restaurant was close to the place I was having some work done on my motorcycle. This is probably akin to going to Sea Island and ordering a steak I suppose. Regardless, the hamburger was rather dry and tasteless - definitely not what you want to go there for .

Folks were nice enough there, but I hope the other dishes have something more to offer or the owner is not the only one who is going to be grumpy!

I live in Houston and happened to pass this restaurant. Looked like a place I would check out. Random shack with lots of cars. So I went with my parents who live close but have never gone. After seeing the reviews we decided to check it out on a Friday night (the only day they are open for dinner). Yes it's a shack, but we knew that. Very clean inside, in fact our waitress was cleaning the railings to the second story when we arrived. A good sign. Staff was great. Knew the specials. I went with a special, grilled angus steak and 4 shrimp wrapped in bacon, baked potato, salad...for about 11 or 12 dollars. With that price I did not expect much. What I got was a perfectly cooked, medium rare steak (never frozen according to the menu, and yes, I believe that), seasoning and smokey flavor, perfect. I shared taste wit mom and dad, Omg, was the reaction, 4 bacon wrapped shrimp, grilled the same way, these were not tiny shrimp either, a baked potato worth 5 bucks by itself (in Houston anyway). Chicken fried steak and fries for my dad was huge and perfectly cooked, about 9 bucks. How they make a profit, I don't know, you could not do this at home for this price. Short story? This is a great place. check them out and support your locals! We all left with more food to go than we actually ate. Does that scare you? Volume over quality? I'd agree, but somehow they have some voodoo going on. Will go every time i'm in the s.a area.

Good home cooking. The tacos are HUGE! When my mom comes in from out of town, she makes us take her here to eat breakfast.

Home style. IMO Grumpy's is a good value for $$ considering the quantity and quality. Chicken fried steak, as one example, could easily be shared between two hungry adults.
Likewise with the breakfast plates.
Yes, $11.00 for steak, eggs and hashbrowns is not 'diner' pricing, but there are also 7-9 dollar breakfast plates that will make you never spend 7-9 dollars at a place like Jim's ever again.
I always wonder about reviewers who complain about price. It's like they are surprised when the bill comes. Here's a tip- the prices are normally on the menu.
If you order ala carte, or something not on the menu, then I guess A little 'ticket shock' might be expected.
In reality four adults can have more breakfast than anyone really needs for 40 bucks including coffee, tax & tip.

OMG!!!. Nothing is a small serving at this place - NOTHING!!! The hamburgers are like mom use to make. Juicy meat, toasted bun and a patty that is larger than the bun. Fries are great. The Mexican food is - TEX - MEX. I would eat at Grumpys for Mexican food before any other place in San Antonio. The chicken fried steak is crispy and enough for 3 meals for me. Staff is friendly but the service from the kitchen is just a little slow but worth the wait. The only thing I would appove on is the tea. The taste is = well not so good. BTW - You have to try the breakfast tacos.

I have to say first off that grumpy here they are not. I received no less than two "howdies" when we entered the cool, old ramshackle house still busy in this late lunch hour with plenty of area blue collar types deep in conversations of cubic feet of concrete for the pour to i.d. of the replacement pipe needed for the hydraulic rammer all while unabashedly shoveling down mounds of potatoes and gravy, burgers, and other oversized menu items. On the way out it was no less than 5 "have a nice day and thank you for coming" salutations! Mighty friendly! With the idea that we would share half of each other's order we requested the chicken fried steak and the chicken fried chicken. Unfortunately the cook was new and had not quite achieved a consistent cfc as the waitress commented that some came out undercooked and some overdone. This cfc suffered from the latter malady with a chain mail batter that was rather knife resistant. The server was quick to mitigate the situation with a replacement that yielded to the blade and had an acceptable crunch. Accompanying mashed potatoes were good with extra ($.69) cream gravy and the cfc plate with steak fries substituted ($.99) for the mashed taters. O.k. green beans were canned served with processed bacon bits, perfect for a boy scout campfire meal. The crunchiness of the batter on both chicken frieds was commendable in that hard to achieve range between gravy wimped out soggy to bullet proof flour Kevlar. The cream gravy was a good consistency while hot. And it goes without saying that all cream gravy worth a hoot will still get gloppy as it cools down. The Texas toast dripped with butter, but hey! This ain't no low cal / low fat plate of rabbit food to begin with. The whole shebang has excess written all over it. So it's either learn it, know it, love it or point your car towards the nearest soup and salad bar. Not a statement of condemnation as I like soup and salad too. Just a realization you must internalize if you are going to enjoy eating here. Service was punctual and might even approach Radar O'Reilly's clairvoyance with a little effort. Lots of pies in boxes labeled and stacked around the entrance area were ready to go for an average price of $16.99. One might expect the prices of this country road restaurant in a dusty, quasi-industrial area to range more toward the working man's daily lunch budget. Our bill was over $44 for the two CFs and two Cokes just to give you an idea. I will say that if you should buy one of the plates we had for lil' Johnny, he will be eating the left overs for the next five days. The waitress also qualified the food portions with a comment that "nothing served here is small." And neither might you be should you arrange for a meal contract here. Enjoy!

Do not be deceived by the looks of this little hole in the wall food establishment! I'm one for trying to find really good little breakfast spots, as it is my favorite meal of the day! I have found my new place while here in San Antonio! It is Grumpys! I ordered the country breakfast and when I say it's a spread! It's a spread! When you first walk in every one is very welcoming, you seat yourself and the service is fast! I will say the pancake was a little dense for me, but it had good flavor. I'm finicky when it comes to flapjacks though. The eggs were made just how I ordered. The bacon was delicious and crispy! Now the biscuits! I died! These homemade fluffy delights are divine! They taste exactly like my moms! She no longer cooks as she has become invalid, so I was definitely hit in the feels with the biscuits. They are so yummy with the sausage gravy! Not to mention the gallon drum of coffee I was served!(I LOVE big cups of coffee!) And Danielle my servr was stop notch If you're in the area I highly recommend Grumpys! And you will probably see me there because it is good!

I LOVE breakfast and this place is phenomenal! The best I've had, at 43yrs old. Jamie was our waitress and was fantastic. She understood my aversion to Styrofoam and brought my water in a glass mug, a piece of foil for the leftovers. My husband and I will definitely be back once I move there in Oct. Ohio needs this restaurant. 4 stars because....Styrofoam. That's just me. 🤷‍♀️ Pics are half of my breakfast taco with a side of hashbrowns, because potatoes are life. They use real butter too. Yummy 😋

Went for lunch specifically to try the chicken fried steak, and I was NOT disappointed. Not only was it delicious, but the portion was so large that I'll get to enjoy it again having brought half of it home! My wife enjoyed the Mexican plate, and my son devoured his patty melt. Our server was very friendly and attentive to our needs. Now I need to make it a point to go back for breakfast!

This is one of the most authentic Texmex restaurants I’ve ever been to. You feel a sense of family eating here. And with the loud kitchen commotion, it’s not hard to see where the moniker Grumpy’s comes from. (Jk 😂). I got the chicken and waffles, waffle came out cold but they quickly fixed it. It really just feels so cozy and homey. If you get so lucky to have Whisper, you heard that right Whisper, to be your waitress, you’ll be taken care of! I’m usually very critical of places, but this place just hit me right in the Texas heart. ❤️
