White's Restaurant

An absolute gem of a spot in the heart of Salem. All I really needed on the morning I visited was a delicious, hearty meal in a subtle, inviting environment. White's is just the place for that. Right off the bat, I knew what I had to order - Don's Big Mess, which came "before there were skillets or scrambles." It's the whole deal. Bacon, sausage, ham, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, and hash browns grilled together and smothered in White's famous sausage gravy, served with toast, a biscuit or English muffin. Oh also, an egg on the top. It was so damn good. Generous portion, too. Whatever the heck they used to season it all was brilliant. There was just the perfect amount of gravy. I've got to try and recreate this at home, I'll be lucky if I make it half as good. ***I got the Mini version, it was only $11.75. My husband got the 2 Egg Meal ($6.95), which came with lots of hash browns and toast, and enjoyed every bit of it. Like my dish, generous portion and super well seasoned food. Even though it was the only place I ate breakfast while in Salem, I would highly recommend it over others. Lots of regulars, and very decent prices for large amounts of delicious food. Super nice servers, too! I will def be returning for more!

One of the best breakfast places in town! We have a toddler and they were extremely accommodating, patient, and kind as we had our small family of three in for breakfast (on a Sunday no less!). We split the 1/2 Mess and a 1/2 biscuits and gravy - everything was perfect, seasoned well, the biscuits were super soft & delicious. Our server was attentive and while she was very busy she took the time to care about every table she served during the Sunday rush. We live just down the street and will be coming back as the food was fantastic and the service outstanding!

I like that this place is "seat yourself", so you don't have to wait for someone to seat you and stand awkwardly in a lobby area or doorway. I noticed some people waiting around for to go orders and it was really busy so it must be a popular spot. Biscuits and gravy was really good, going to try something else next time. Waitress was nice and kept the coffee full. Will definitely return.

Outstanding!! The fish is fresh, and perfectly fried, the fries are also flawlessly cooked, burgers are wonderful and all of it priced well below fair market value. I don't think it would be possible to eat this good for this little money other than shopping well and preparing at home. I highly recommend it.

The best breakfast food I have had in Salem. I had the cheesy potato pancakes and they were amazing. The service was also amazing , very responsive and alert. I tasted my wife's corn beef and hash and pretty sure that stuff was straight from a can, tasted exactly like the canned stuff, so don't order that if you want a signature experience. Get the potato pancakes or the big mess.

I was placed on the waitlist and then I saw 3 couples go ahead of me because they could place 2 ppl. I tried to be understanding then we got a seat. I looked and they again placed 2 ppl in an easy 5 ppl seat. I wonder how they are placing ppl. Anyway I picked my order and my kids placed an order. I picked a waffle with over easy eggs and sausage. My sausage was a little darker than I liked and my eggs were basically raw. I'd give it a C rating. The food was edible, the staff were fine. I plan on doing reviews with pics of restaurant bathrooms because they should do better. Overall experience was okay. I wouldn't run back. Ymmv

This was a great place to eat. It was a very affordable restaurant with good food. The staff was welcoming. The restaurant was clean for an older restaurant. The bathrooms are small and pretty clean. The pancakes where fluffy and delicious. I wasn't impressed with the corn beef hash. It was okay but I've had better. Food quality is good and the prices are even better.
