I gotta say, the last time I was at the Turf Club was in 2008 I played a show there, and the experience was...shall we say....less than desirable (to say the least) and I never went back. I wasn't aware that the place changed hands since that horrible experience. I had one of the most fun New Year celebrations of my life last night. Thank you Turf Club staff, and the Big Wu and MJG Productions for an amazing night. I had late brunch, and the food was killer, and the Bloody Mary was one of the best I've had in a very long time. I'll definitely be making the trek from MPLS to St. Paul to visit the Turf Club again.
There are very few smaller venues like this anymore: maybe holds 250 people or so; cool tall ceilings and pretty good acoustics. This is my 3rd show there and while it gets close to, it never blows my eardrums. Loud but tastefully so.The "basement" has booths like an old malt shop and framed, strange clown pictures. A $10 cover and show over by 11:15. Fills the bill for me.
This small venue has a great vibe. Just saw a great lineup of local musicians paying tribute to Bob Dylan on his 81st birthday. There a bar for starters and they serve your beer in a an actual glass instead of a plastic cup. Clean bathroom. There were high top tables one could reserve, but there was plenty of room to stand near the stage and enjoy the show. The band backing up the different performers was excellent. The rotation of micro sets kept the sound guy hopping and we watched as musicians gave hand signals to Matt, or just told the guy “I can’t hear myself out of this monitor.” I highly recommended seeing a show at the Turf Club! If you take the light rail, be sure to leave before the last LRT around midnight. MetroTransit says the final train is 11:35pm, but luckily one showed at midnight.
I was here this Saturday to see the Flobots perform. They were amazing to watch live and were very good at engaging the audience.
The Turf Club was serving food in the basement so I had some appetizers while I waited. Their French fries seemed homemade and had the right amount of girth and crispness. Their onion rings were also good but I preferred their French fries. There’s also a projector in the basement that was playing Howard the Duck. The walls in the basement had decorations with clown pictures and murals of interesting art.
This is a really intimate venue with a nice atmosphere. The main stage is on the same level as the entrance. There were some seats by the entrance and next to the bar. I could see the stage well from where I was seated, which was next to the bar, and I also liked the acoustics from where I sat.
Enjoyable time at the Turf Club. Went this past Tuesday for live music. Got there at 7 for 8pm show. Got a table in middle of the main room. Had a tasty burger and fries. 2 talented bands. Will go there again.
Great venue! Good sound, great staff, good selection of drinks, good seating. The crowd at the show was a bit lethargic, but the venue and the bar were 💯
I saw a show here for the first time yesterday evening. This is a really spacious venue with lots of high tables and seats at the bar. I recommend getting here as early as possible - preferably as soon as the doors open - because the seats and tables can fill up quickly. It was also ventilated enough where it wasn't too cold or too warm, and the sweater I brought with me was not needed. They have a decent food menu and lots of beers on tap with non-alcoholic options. I stayed on the main floor and didn't go downstairs, so I can't speak for what is down there, but the bar area had a water refill station near the front door for customers to use. The bathrooms were also really clean. Overall I really enjoyed the show and I would definitely see another at this venue.
Love this venue! Waitstaff are on their A-Game, every time we visit. Sound is fantastic for such a small place (max capacity 300). Also, food is great! Keep up the good work Turf Club!
The best small venue! Needs to be all ages though so my kids can come!
Great service, great show! The only thing keeping this from being fully 5 stars is the limited food menu, and they don't have root beer or desserts (not even an ice cream drink). But the drinks are strong and tasty and the menu, while hardly extensive, is solid. Fun place to check out local music and have a few!
