Review Jim-denny's Lunch - Sacramento

Wade Lucas
Under the word of mouth recommendation from a coworker, I decided to give this rejuvenated location a shot over lunch. Not only was it one of the most memorable dining experiences for the year, I can’t wait to go back. Server, Chloe, was an absolute angel. Attentive. Friendly. Had the hustle but made it look effortless. Gave me a recommendation on onion rings instead of fries and that choice did not disappoint ! Very lightly breaded. Cooked to perfection. My only complaint - and this isn’t a huge deal breaker bc I’d rather it take a little time to make quality food - if you’re short on time. Wait. Go when you have a little time to kill. Again. It’s not at a fault. They were hoofing it busy during a lunch hour. If I could give more than 5⭐️’s I would. They deserve it!!

Open for a month under new ownership with ample outside tables in addition to the cozy inside counter. Plus 1⭐️ for the dog friendly shaded patio under the overhang of the adjacent building. I’d read a SacBee article about new owner N'Gina Guyton and she and her crew were busy on this sunny Saturday in early October. I had the LJS tempura battered cod sandwich ($14) with onion rings ($6) and for dessert banana pudding ($6). All were delicious. I noticed a sign that a liquor license has been applied for. I’ll be back to try their burgers when I can enjoy a beer. If you’re close to Downtown Sacramento definitely come try this reopened classics.

Tried a Georgia mock tail and fried Cauliflower for afternoon snack. Both were excellent! I’ll be back. There was no wait around 2pm Friday.

Upon arrival the restaurant staff was welcoming, and attentive to get us seated. The outside waiting area was shaded and the staff was communicative about the wait. It was very appreciated. The food was amazing. I had ‘the American’ burger, garlic fries, Brussels sprouts, and banana pudding. The serving sizes were plenty, and everything cooked was nice and hot. I recommend everything mentioned. Overall, it was a great experience and I’m excited to visit again. If you’re short on time I recommended planning in advance, or dining in when you have time to spare.

Ever since reading about this place, and the new owner's story as well as the adversity she's overcome, I knew I wanted to try this place...well it didn't disappoint in the least! They're still working out patio seating that's covered from the elements, but other than that this place is a MUST-TRY! Take it from this foodie, you can thank me later 🤣

Full disclosure, I only actually found this place because I was looking for an alternative to a chain pancake Diner. Walking up, the limited menu was a little imposing but I'm SO glad I took a chance. The Sunrise Bowl was absolutely phenomenal! Tasty, simple, but so well cooked and seasoned! I got it with gravy and bacon, and the Cajun potatoes and OH MY GOD, best decision ever at the recommendation of the guy working up front. If you're looking for an awesome little place for breakfast or lunch, definitely recommend!

Everything about this place is fantastic - the setting, the food and the people. Go here. Do it now.

I finally was able to try this place today. When I walked in the two worker's up front was really nice and pleasant. Which made for a good atmosphere. Service was really quick. And the food was so good. I had the Southern burger. That thing was so good.

I love the atmosphere. I'm going to use their place for a scene in a future movie of mine. The burgers are the best in Sacramento. And the HOT LINKS!!! Mann...can't wait to get another CHILI HOT LINK DOG!

We had a delicious chicken sandwich and burger. Service was excellent/friendly and price was right. We will return.

Thank you for reinventing this landmark burger joint with beautiful burgers, salads and - yes - alcohol. Thanks to N'Gina, Chloe, and Grace, and the cooks! Indoor and outdoor available with great service. I had the fresca salad with blackened salmon, fruit, greens, cheese. Yum! They did a fantastic job with the remodel, scraping off all the gunk on the paneling to uncover beautiful wood underneath. Now that's a labor of love. And what we now have is a decent restaurant in Alkali Flat. Welcome to the neighborhood! Generous servings, fair prices, and an awesome owner with attentive staff and cooks.

A classic burger joint, under new ownership, great old school burger with quality ingredients. They are still working out permits so outdoor seating is fine but will get better (10/23)

So super good. Fresh maid prebiotic drinks, fresh-picked mint and rosemary. Burgers were amazing.. can't wait to go back. Card or digital payment only. No

Ate here today after jury duty. It is located right across the street from the train at I and 12. They have been in business for 85 years. The place is pretty small. There were only like 10 bar stools...it makes for a personal experience. I was greeted right away. The staff was very nice. I ordered the single burger...no lettuce and it comes with crinkle cut fries. The burger was very good. It was juicy and hot off the grill...The bun toasted just the way I like. The fries were perfect...hot...crispy on outside...soft on inside. I would come here again.

Updated review: Jimmy's continues to offer excellent food and service. They have limited indoor seating and plenty of outdoor seating. They recently added two tvs inside as well. The food is outstanding and ranges from $5.99-$14.99 a meal. You absolutely have to try the chili cheese fries. Their chili is house made with giant chunks of top grade beef in it. This visit I had the brisket sandwich with their house made barbecue sauce and it was fantastic. My dining companion had the hot link with grilled onions and cheese (photos attached). I highly recommend you support this local business, especially at night since it's been slow for them at night. If you love Jimmy's and want to see the place stay open another 50+ years than support them with a stop today!

Here in Sac just for overnight, we wanted a quick stop for breakfast. Jim Denney's was a short walk from our hotel. As soon as we walked in, it felt like stepping back into the past. The counter was beautifully worn, and funny enough, an episode of Cheers was playing on the TV. The griddle was super seasoned and if walls could talk, I'm sure there would be some amazing stories. We were greeted immediately and we sat and placed our orders. I had the breakfast burrito and the hubby had the breakfast sandwich. We both had coffee. The coffee was served from an older percolator. While I love the fresh espresso from the newer machines, the coffee from the percolator tasted just as it should. Classic and tasty. The burrito and the sandwich came out smelling delicious and tasted just as it smelled. The tortilla on the burrito was crisped and everything inside was layered perfectly. I usually ask for hot sauce, but the burrito was excellent on its own. I was about halfway through when I saw the owner coming out with a big bag of dried chili peppers. I asked what they were for and he said he was making hot sauce. Uh, sold. I asked him if he had any in the back already made and he said he had a tiny bit. It really was a tiny bit, but I'm so glad he had it. I'd buy a bottle if he packaged it for sale! And of course, it was excellent on the burrito. Next time we stay in Sac, we'll be back to Jim Denney's for sure! Hopefully more of the work places open back up and business will improve. I would love to see this old staple thrive.

Tasty comfort food. Wonderful people are making it happen in front and behind the house. I'm definitely going back here when I'm in Sac.

Great place for a hole in the wall place. Very nice staff of 2. Very limited bar and bar stool seats only, most are very worn out. Maybe 12 seats inside. You get to know your elbow neighbor at this place. No inside tables. Outdoor bench tables should be nice in the summer. Good food and coffee. Lots of 1930s memorabilia... in fact probably everything there might have been from the 1930s... Get to watch your food cooking on a small grill. Takes a while to get your food because of the small stove but worth the wait. Had breakfast... lunch was starting up, could smell a lot of garlic being added. Looked like milkshakes might be a specialty. I definitely would go back and have breakfast.
