Varrelmann's Bake Shop

I've lived in Rutherford most of my life, yet had never (as far as I remember) bought anything from Varrelmann's. I assumed since it has been around forever, that it would have fantastic items. Not so much. I bought a piece of crumb cake that was sold I believe at regular price (almost $10) for my significant other's mother's birthday. I was mortified as she and I were eating it, to find I could barely get the fork through it. It was stale. True, it was the last piece left on a Sunday around 2 PM, but as far as I know, crumb cake doesn't go stale in a matter of hours. It must have been many days old, and the person behind the counter still sold it. Maybe it was edible, but in my opinion, not sellable. Two stars instead of one because the person behind the counter was nice anyway.

I love Varrelmann's! This is a Rutherford staple that hasn't changed for good reason: why mess with perfection? They, of course, have the standard bakery fare of cakes, pies, and donuts that are delightful, but, you *really* want to go in for their butter cookies! They tout an old recipe, and for good reason! Come in and enjoy!

So my this is a picture of my four-year-old daughter‘s birthday cake I have no complaints on the design of the cake because it was what I wanted and that I was happy with unfortunately as I went to go cut into the cake after singing happy birthday I smell that the cake it was SPOILED . I tasted the buttercream - tasted the inside and everything was spoiled highly upset that my four-year-old daughter and her friends and family could not enjoy her birthday cake . the one thing she asked me for her birthday. I was highly upset since this is the first birthday since Covid where everyone was allowed to get together and we couldn’t enjoy the tradition of having a cake on a birthday. I went the next day to return the cake and ask the owner what had happened she said that she made everything fresh she even smelled the cake and tasted in front of me and her facial expression after just smelling it definitely shown that it was spoiled. she refunded my money. there was no extra customer service - she did not Apologize at All . She was not sorry that my four-year-old child cannot enjoy her birthday cake which makes me very upset with the customer service of this place. She took the cake to taste in the back and walked away. If she had offered to give me a another cake or seem a little bit more sincere that the fact that my child could not have her cake on her birthday I probably would’ve been OK but the lack of customer service was very disappointing for a place that has a 4.6 rating. I DO NOT recommend this place for special occasions.

Went here to as I’ve never been here and based on the google reviews of 4.5 stars I had high expectations. I’m sorry to say, it DID not live up to my expectations. I bought a piece of crumb cake, some rugula, and 2 chocolate iced vanilla cup cakes. The crumb cake was dry as sand and I couldn’t even eat it without needing some water. Then the cupcakes were again, dry as a bone and like literal dust. The rugula wasn’t dry but lacked flavor and almost felt stale. I’m disappointed to see such bad quality come out of this bakery. I won’t be going back, and I hope you approach this place with low expectations. I don’t know how it has 4.5 stars but from what I tried, it was awful. Maybe they do have some items that might be good, but after this experience, I won’t be going back to find out. Wouldn’t recommend.

Ordered a German Chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and buttercream icing. This was 2 days before Thanksgiving and I was able to pick it up on Thanksgiving morning... It was simply divine! This was my first experience with Varrelmann's and I will surely be going back to try everything else on the menu.

I stopped in at Vallemann's Bake Shop last month, Nov. 2021..Back in the Area now, was happy to see they are still in Rutherford. Same Warm, & Friendly greeting when you enter. I noticed the Rice Pudding & Bread Pudding.. Looked like my Mom'S old Receipe.. I had to try them. So "Excellent", "Perfection" !!! I just ordered each to surprise my Brother for after our Family Christmas Dinner! The great memories of these Nastalgic Deserts will bring Happy Memories!!!

Tried this place for the first time today. The cupcake was on the drier side and frosting tasted mostly of powdered sugar. "Nutty" brownie has no actual nuts inside - just a sprinkling of walnut dust on top. Not rich and fudge-y, which means they probably don't put real chocolate into their brownies but use only cocoa powder. Overall, disappointing. Go to Erie Bakery next door for desserts done right.

I stopped here for the first time in two months. Everything has changed, and not for the better. The price of everything in this shop has doubled and the size of all the pastries has shrunk! I guess the owner has decided to keep pace with some of the gentrified coffee shops around her. I WILL NOT BE BACK
