Yesterday was my first time having breakfast and it was amazing!!! I always come back to get lunch but I now have a new breakfast place too!!! Also the hours open are great!!
Country cooking at its best! Large portions for your money. Desserts are well worth your time. Staff is friendly and always greet you with a smile and a " Come on back!" You get fast service whether it's dining in or take out. And easy to see from Hwy 301. Five stars and two thumbs up from me!
The BBQ Is Just One Of The Nice Choices Here. This relative newbie on the Eastern NC BBQ scene occupies the second, and final, home of the late, lamented Melton's Barbecue - a true, iconic NC barbecue restaurant. This place represents a totally different approach to that embraced by Melton's - this is cafeteria style, with chopped pork barbecue only a small part of what is offered - there are baby back ribs, brisket, and down home country cooking items - including Pork Chops (Smothered or Fried), Meatloaf, Fried Chicken, Chicken & Pastry, BBQ Chicken, and Fried Fish (Trout & Flounder).
They have the usual sides, daily specials, a few sandwiches, and serve chopped barbecue and beef brisket every day. Prices are very reasonable - 1 Meat & 2 Sides (with roll or hushpuppies) are $6.99 at lunch and dinner, and you can add an extra meat for only a $1 more. A Veggie Plate with 3 items is $3.99, roll or hushpuppies included - that probably beats K & W.
The chopped barbecue is very nice - moist, tender, moderately chopped, and has a nice vinegar hook at the end, but little heat. They cook only pork shoulders here so the meat is lean and clean. The Beef Brisket is tender, but very heavily sauced with a thick, red sauce that is pretty sweet - a little goes a long ways. I would not reorder this unless I could get it without the sauce. The Chicken & Pastry was outstanding, loaded with chicken flavor, and the pastry is thin and delicious - comes close to that at Bum's in Ayden.
Collards were very good, well seasoned; the Mac & Cheese was also nice; the Butter Beans were canned but also benefited from being seasoned correctly; and the Cabbage was ok, had some red pepper flakes, but they seemed to contribute very little. The Slaw was decent, but very wet, while the Hushpuppies were exceptional.
This is Top 20 Eastern style barbecue here, if a little on the mild side, but some will like this. The pricing is more than reasonable, some you will find value as well as variety, and the service is nice - folks are friendly and helpful.
Make Note: They are CLOSED ON SATURDAY.
Incredible Fried Chicken!. Wonderful Southern cooking. Fried chicken is worth the drive. This is where the locals go. Very friendly service. Great price and value.
In a town where "BBQ" is fried chicken with a side of pulled pork, I had to search long and hard to find the rest of the oink. Found it. They gave ribs, untrimmed beef brisket, and BBQ chicken. Sides were very good: greens , sugar beans, cabbage. Also the slaw was not so overly sweet as many places do. Good service In an old time southern cafeteria. On wish is that brisket was left whole and sliced at ordering rather than swimming in a steam tray in sauce all evening. It dried out a few slices.
First time eating dinner here should've known it was good . I enjoyed i hope they bring the breakfast back . Go check out good affordable and good quality food.
This was my very first time visiting and the food and service was great! The brown skin Lady that had the bun in her hair was very nice and patient when my son spilled my drink and she was very easy to talk to! The Mac and cheese, spaghetti,cabbage, hush puppies, and BBQ chicken was amazing!!! Sweet tea was great too
Good country cooking, cafeteria style delivery, $10/person I'd say would be a good estimate for supper. Sunday thru Wednesday. Malt Shop Oldies music was playing when we were there, folks were nice and friendly, easy location to find, get in and out of. They even have a special room of to the side for groups and special events. We loved it!
Everything on the menu is "home-cooked" and of the finest quality! I have not had Chicken Pastry this good at any other restaurant I have ever visited, it is as good as any my mother made, and believe me, that is saying something!
If you are looking for somewhere that serves excellent homemade Southern cooking, look no further than Hunter Hill Cafe. The prices are really reasonable, the quality is excellent, the staff are super friendly, and the restaurant is always clean and pleasant.
Well where do I start? I'm not from the area so I decided to stop by while in town for training. The people were so nice and had no problems letting me sample and making me feel comfortable (even tho after I sampled the beef brisket, I knew that was the right choice for me). The food was awesome and when they found out I wasn't from Rocky Mount, they introduced to to new things and just made me feel more welcome. The strawberry cake was awesome. One lady told me I would be back, and she was right. Thank you ladies for everything 😘 Can't wait to go back 😋
Tonight was our first time trying this place. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff was top notch. Ribeyes steak, pulled pork, buttered potatoes, cooked cabbage, green beans, baked spaghetti, and the hash browns... Mmmmm yum! We finished it off with the best strawberry cake we ever had. Definitely will be back!!;
