Tried this little gem last weekend when I was visiting Portland. This place has everything I like about Korean cuisine. Bibimbap and steamed buns...IT WAS DELICIOUS. The menu is very small but done right.
We ordered the bibimbap with short rib. The base is steamed rice with japchae (glass noodles), on top of that, they add the rest of the ingredients (spinach, bean sprouts, kimchi, raddish, sunny side up egg) and your choice of sauce (there are 4 to choose from). The portion is quite big. We were a group of 3 and we just ordered one bibimbap to share and each of us got a steam bun with pork and we shared their roasted tea chocolate chip cookie.
The food at Kim Jong Smokehouse was the highlight of our Portland trip. Will definitely be eating here next time we are in the area or they should consider opening a location in Southern California (Orange or LA County).
With all of these korean restaurants keeping it traditional, it is refreshing to see a place that thinks outside the box! Their contemporary take on Bibimbap includes frying the rice together with Japchae. In addition to the traditional Gochujang they have three other sauces to choose from including smoked kimchee that's been pureed. The meats are smoked to, and the texture and flavor pairs extremely well compared to the usual grilled meats. Overall im very happy with my experience. They're good for drinks too!
Stopped by Pine Street Market before leaving town and got to try one of Kim Jong's steamed buns. Tons of flavor in a small package. Would love to have tried more, but we were trying to eat our way through the town so we couldn't fill up too much. Will definitely stop back next time we're in town to try more of the menu.
The smoked beef tastes extraordinary, the egg was a little bit overdone, the spicy salsa was really spicy witch is good and the bun was really good... BUT the bowl was to much food, I believe the could have a smaller plate at a lower price and it would be perfect.
Cool name tho!
Their sauces are amazing! Really great food too. Staff was helpful and friendly. Their gochujang is unique yet stays true to a classic gochujang. The Kimchi mayo was also great.
This is a great gourmet Korean BBQ located in the Pine Street Market. This location is part of a large gourmet food hall in downtown Portland. They were able to accommodate gluten-free and dairy allergies quite easily. This is a great choice for Korean bowls!!
Presentation, prices and staff were amazing! Galbi was one of the tastiest I've ever had. However I found the bibimpab ban chans too sour. When I mentioned that to the waiter, he offered anything from the menu as a courtesy, SO KIND!
As a Korean, I wasn't sure how I felt about Kim Jon's Smokehouse. It's not really Korean food...but that doesn't mean it's good. Perhaps it's better to say that it's Korean-inspired? Their version of "bibimbap" reminds me of chipotle or poke bowls, but different and better. The meat is tender, so they earned having "smokehouse" in their name. The portion is also quite large!
I love a good bowl of bibimbap. It was a very tasty assortment of meat and veggies and all of it in the amazing scorched rice. The portion was a bit big, so maybe split it with a friend. The price matched the portion size, a little on the high side. It has only been one day and I already want to go back.
The food is always great! I've had the king oyster mushrooms as well as the salmon in a bowl and they are both fantastic. The flavors are a nice change from traditional American food. The employees have always been friendly and helpful. The food can be a little spicy, so if you are unsure of something, just ask!
