Can't praise this restaurant enough. The food is delicious and unpretentious, impeccably prepared and equally perfect in delivery and presentation. The staff is equally as perfect. Having spent a majority of the last 20 years in Italy, including living in and hosting many tours there, without hesitation I can say this restaurant transports me back to my favorite place on earth every time without disappointment, thank you Gallo Nero.
The food was fantastic. There were four of us with different dishes; everyone was pleased with our selection. Our server was attentive and knew the selection of wines available. Guided us to the perfect bottle for our varied dishes. It was a very nice evening only made better by Trattoria Gallo Nero.
When we eat out, we almost always end up here. Great fish, soups that are superb, an all Italian wine list and the best ravioli in the world.
My New Go-To For Elegant Italian. I absolutely loved my evening at Gallo Nero last night. The food was perfect and the experience was both elegant and relaxed. We started with a bottle of wine recommended by our great server, mostly because everything was Italian so we needed help. For food we started with a sample of 3 bruschetta, The gorgonzola and traditional tomato were amazing (skip the Fettunta). I got a salad with fresh and tasty buffalo mozzarella and my partner had an amazing tortellini soup, really good broth. For mains we chose the chicken and the beef tenderloin. Both excellent, but the beef was a real standout, 2nd only to one I had at Ringside, really, really good. We got a side of seasonal vegetables and stuffed broiled tomatoes. Needless to say, we were beyond stuffed and had to take some home, the portions are large. Food-wise I think I was most impressed by how simple everything was, not over-sauced (if sauced at all), just prepared to really let the flavors come through naturally. I really recommend Gallo Nero, had a great meal, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. And really, I thought it was a great value for what we got. If I had to dig for something I’d say the pacing of the food delivery was slightly fast. There are a lot of Italian places in The Pearl and Downtown, but this is now my go-to, it’s superb.
The food was good but the portion size was a little bit small for the price you pay.
Great food, well prepared
Now this was excellent. It was plated so beautifully, and the flavors complemented one another so well. The risotto was very creamy, interspersed with bits of chopped asparagus, onions, fresh cherry tomatoes, and probably a few other veggies I can’t recall anymore, and topped with thinly shaved Parmesan. The potatoes were roasted to a crisp on the outside, while being tender and delicately seasoned. As I am wont to do with my potatoes and eggs, I spooned the eggs on top of the potatoes and broke the yolks so that the yellow sunshine poured all over the tubers and added a rich protein filled layer of complexity to the dish.
Excellent service and a romantic atmosphere. A good variety of food to choose from, all of the ingredients being very fresh and well cooked.

Must go to for authentic Italian. Fresh burrata with mortadella slices for appetizer, and Gluten free GF mixed seafood spaghetti for the wife and a sage buttered pear ravioli with a side of polenta for this guy! Excellent service. Dim and quiet atmosphere perfect for a romantic evening out. Must see!
I have to say that Trattoria Gallo Nero provides one of the most authentic experiences in Portland, when it comes to Italian cuisine. The restaurant organized a special event, featuring the wines of Franco Serra, paired with the chef's 4 course meal! The chef, cooks, servers and the rest of the staff are kind and attentive, plus the food is magnificent! Thank you for the wonderful experience!
Cheers,
Brandon

Always good food, service and atmosphere. Buon Appetito!
Great meal here with our 7 year old who was the only kid in the whole place while we were there. Food was very good particularly the pasta dishes. Service was lovely, helpful and kind but not at all pretentious. Prices were so reasonable considering the quality and quantity of food and drinks. Very satisfying meal. We’ll return on another trip to Portland.
Came in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to get a table right away, though I'm sure the situation differs for dinner. They offer a wide variety of authentic Italian food ranging from appetizers, entrees, and dessert. We really enjoyed the meal overall, everything tasted great! I highly recommend you top the meal off with a delicious cappuccino if you still have room.
Food is out of this world, service is amazing, atmosphere doesn’t hurt either! All in all a great place to get lunch or dinner if you want real Italian food with dynamic flavors.
The restaurant has a lovely elegant atmosphere. ✨ We had the Spaghetti Ai Frutti Di Mare (Bongole), Lasagna, Branzino Al Limone (Fish Special) and Tiramisu for dessert. All of them looked and tasted good and full of flavor. The dessert tiramisu was also in a glass and had a different flavor. The espresso was very rich and delicious. Especialy, even my husband, who doesn't usually drink cocktails, liked the Brooklyn Cocktail, saying it had a good bourbon flavor. I would like to come back next time for our anniversary. I would recommend making a reservation as the restaurant was full shortly after we arrived.
This has to be the best Italian restaurant in Portland. Authentic, delicious food and professional, friendly service in an upscale yet unpretentious environment. Lasagna is amazing.
My mother, sister and I were visiting Portland over Mother's Day and came in for a last-minute dinner. What a delight. First off, our server was fantastic and very knowledgeable about the whole menu, and everything she brought us was delicious. I ordered the pasta pomodoro and it was simple but just spot-on in terms of flavor and texture. My favorite aspect of the meal was the cocktail I ordered. I'm not super knowledgeable about wine - if you are, then you've got lots of options! - so I went for the sfumato and soda cocktail. And it was FANTASTIC. I ordered two of them and when I got home, I asked my husband to recreate it for me. He called the bartender, who gave him the scoop! Super nice. A cool place staffed by good people.
