Portland's French Bistro. So perfectly French, and so perfect at being French! It's also some damn fine food, and perhaps worthy of a spot on my lust of the city's best eateries.
My table of four shared the sear foie gras and steak tartare, both of which were at the top of their breeds. The foie was perfectly seared and smooth. And the tartare, which I'd been craving for weeks, was so well handled and seasoned. Definitely the best I've had in the city.
My hubby and I shared the oxtail bourguignon and the black cod en casserole. The oxtail was tender, fall of the bone and barely needed chewing. The sauce was so yummy. The pommes purée it was sitting in couldn't really hold its own against the bourguignon, but that's forgivable. The black cod, though...that dish was so flawless. I never knew cod could tastes so good without being fried and served on a bed of chips! The portion size was not enormous, either, which was nice.
For dessert, he and I split the creme brûlée and the maple tart. The creme brûlée was just a little under done.m, sadly, and the vanilla barely came through. The maple tart was excellent, though. The vanilla bean sour cream it was served with really put it on top.
For the 4 of us, with two appetizers, four entrees, five cocktails, and four desserts, it was $360 including tip. Worth every penny. We weren't rushed, service was friendly...it was a good night.
We had dinner tonight with our niece and her fiancé at St. Jack in Northwest. I can recommend it unequivocally! From the hors d'oeuvres (crispy pork rind with maple syrup - and trust me, this was not what you're thinking, Coquille St. Jack, and wonderfully prepared prawns with vadouvan curry aioli - so good) to my Lyonnaise onion tarte with poached egg, to baked-to-order madeleines for dessert, the food was delicious and beautiful. I have to admit I'm a bit of a service snob, and the service here was attentive and impeccable without being stuffy. My French martini was maybe the best I've ever had and served with such flair, and the wine recommendations were spot on.
Go before the end of the month for their Portland Dining Month menu, which includes the onion tarte as one of the choices.
Exceptional service, exceptional food, never a bad experience here! Try something you’ve never had, trust your servers to give you the best recommendations and splurge on the best French food in Portland!
Truly fantastic, exceptional meal and service at a relatively reasonable price. Decadent French fare, couldn't eat there every night but perfect for a special splurge.
Great look. Cool music, good service. The escargot was absolutely delicious. Came with large baguette to get all of the butter sauce. It truly was delicious. I ordered the chicken with a dill pickle sauce and I have to say it did not work. Very sharp and tangy and did not go with chicken not a fit for my pallet at all and I don’t think for many. I would advise a different sauce for the chicken. So I paid $45 for a hen that I ate a quarter of and that’s always a bummer but overall a nice experience.
St. Jack is the second French restaurant we experienced, and honestly after dining at the very wonderful Le Pigeon I didn’t think I could be impressed, and I was wrong! Our dining experience at St. Jack was excellent, the food was delicious and so beautifully presented, the cocktails we had were refreshing (the weather that night was in the triple digits and we needed something to cool down) and crafted to perfection. We had the foie grass, the tuna crudo, the pateé, the special of the day, and of course we had to try the caviar, after all we were spoiling ourselves! Everything was remarkable, including the service, our waiter was knowledgeable and eager to answer our questions about the menu. I can’t wait to go back and take our friends!
Some of the best food we have ever had. Although I would not recommend the escargot which was not very flavorful and not up to par with other dishes.
One of the many solid places to get some great food along NW 23rd. The food here has always been consistently great and the service is wonderful. My go to dish here is their large dry age steak with frites that can be shared. Even the simple things like bread and butter here is good.
I've now been here twice (once pre-Pandy and just went recently) and not much has changed, which was nice considering so many restaurants have since the Pandy. Prices were fair and service was good. Jasmine was our server and was very nice. I don't have anything amazing or bad to say. It gets pretty busy though so make a reservation.
Small restaurant and bar. Very interesting set up as the bar and restaurant are on opposite sides separated by a wall and small walkway between. Romantic, dim lighting. Lots of candles. Perfect for a date.
My husband picked this restaurant for my birthday. We had reservations at 6, but went early. Got a seat in the bar and had the tripe and mussels. Were quickly moved to the dining room and had the blackened cod and veal.
Everything was tasty! The cod was a bit salty for me, but we managed to finish it.
We had a fantastic time! The food was brilliant and the waiter was exceptional. He suggested a wonderful bottle of wine that paired beautifully with our meal.
First off- must try the insanely huge chicharrones. They are airy and crispy with some spice with maple syrup on the side to make the perfect pork rind experience. The interior is wonderfully low lit and cozy. Cocktails, food, and service was all great.
