Review Mekong Pho Gourmet - Pittsburgh

Celeste Flaherty-Thomas
Excellent food. Pho is great and they have a wide variety as well as other items. The Banh Mi is also very very good. This place can get very very busy with both dine in and a lot of takeout so service can be a little slow but if you have the time it is well worth it

Tried Bun bo hue. Very good. Could have been a bit hotter when served but very good flavor. The lady running the front did very well serving all the tables. She was very friendly.

Dine in after a long drive from Buffalo to Pittsburgh. Really hungry when we reached there and was greeted by the friendly waitress. She really love young children, in our group there us a small baby and the waitress is really nice to her. Food is really awesome, we order all kind of soup noodles. Ranging from beef, chicken, beef balls, etc and vietnamese spring rolls. Drink wise was nice that they serve bubble tea. Highly recommended for family dinning. Authentic and tasty!

Truly excellent pho. The broth was delicious beefy with peppery heat and a nice tang. The rare beef and brisket were well seasoned and tender. Lots of add-ins are provided and the serving size was generous. Service was also very fast. The kitchen and staff are very flexible with requests for combinations or items not on the menu.

Delicious Vietnamese noodles! Will try to have every Vietnamese item on the menu. Very nice server. Clean. Good flavors. Hope their Vietnamese items grow!

Great food and service. We ordered ma po tofu and the Cantonese wonton soup.

One of my favorite places for pho and boba. Always delicious.

Calling a place "the best pho place in the area" is cliche and anecdotal. People have different taste preference. This place has a unique taste profile. The broth is more savory than sweet, but there is a nice sweetness to round off the profile. You can tell that they put a lot of care and attention to their broth. Whether you have their Hu Tieu/Mi, Bun Bo Hue or Pho, this is a remarkable place. Their grilled pork chop has a unique taste and extremely juicy. You also need to try the sauce they invented for the grilled chicken.

This was out first time ordering out from here, and we will definitely come back again! Not only was the food delicious, but it was right on time. Their prices are also really reasonable, especially the lunch specials. All of the employees were extremely nice and made this a wonderful first experience. We will be sure to stop by here again!

I've been getting Chinese comfort food from Mekong in Dormont since my early 20's. Ownership has changed over the years, but the current owners are incredibly friendly and they've brought in different Vietnamese style dishes that have quickly become my go-to comfort food favorites. I haven't been to dine-in at Mekong since last year, but I've been trying to order delivery from them when I can. Delivery is always faster than I expect and always friendly. They're real sweethearts there.

Absolutely my favorite place to eat! A family owned business where your food is made to order. Always fresh and an over abundance of food. I always have to take half home. I love the garlic chicken with the veggies and the brown rice. And the egg rolls are delicious! Great service and fast. I always eat in cause I love the quaint atmosphere.

You can find Asian and Vietnamese cuisine here. For Vietnamese food, I recommend " Com Suon/Ga/Tom " ( rice with pork/chicken/shrim )

I've tried a lot of pho around the Pittsburgh area and this one is one of my favourites. I especially enjoy their homemade chili oil. The staff is wonderfully friendly as well. We went there for my boyfriend's birthday and the owner/manager was incredibly sweet.

Excellent beef pho. This place does Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine. Atmosphere is meh, but it was perfect to grab a late lunch with my better half. Prices are reasonable. There are flashier places with nicer dining rooms, but you will pay more.

Terrible delivery. I put an order in for delivery and was told they were busy-would be an hour for delivery time. It actually took 1 hour and 50 minutes for our food to arrive. Unfortunately, I will never order from here again.

Love, love, love this place! Best Pho! Love everyone who works here! Great comfort food!

PHO - Mamma's. Mamma's Pho is the best PHO in all of Pennsylvania. I have tried quite a few and I would say that the PHO at Mekong is just absolutely wonderful....Very rich broth...Wonderful!!! Have been there several times. Oh and also love the crunchy spring rolls....Yum...

The hot and sour soup smelled burnt but tasted ok and then I pulled a blue RUBBER BAND out of the container. The quoted delivery time was one hour and it took an hour and a half. The 2 shrimp egg rolls were horrible. The staff was nice but this was worst Chinese food I have ever eaten.

Simply delicious. Everything is home made from scratch and you can tadte the individuality in each dish. My wife and I came for the Pho but also tried the fried dumplings and chicken fried frice. All of the dishes were extremely tasty. We have a new favorite restaurant in the South Hills.

Best hot and sour soup... ever. The most humble Vietnamese family I've ever met.I'm convinced if you eat hot peppers you won't catch a cold....Well Theresa's mom has the cure all for me, she makes everything especially spicy for me and ohhhh soooo delicious. Love people and love people more who make really great food! Eat in or take out you will not be disappointed.

This place rocks. It's a family business with great food and great people. I got the ying chow Vietnamese noodles and they were awesome. My husband got the happy family with scallop and shrimp chicken and pork that was alin a dark sauce so tasty. A lot of food for a low price u can't go anywhere with sesfood for under $12 that taste good. U would expect that a place with such great quality and the freshness would be charging a lot more. For the price what I got is more then what was expected.

Disclaimer Needed. Typically when one orders a combo dish that's said to contain chicken, pork and shrimp you would expect to get more than one single shrimp. But that's apparently the policy for the Mekong Ying Chow platter. Only, they don't tell you when you order it. <br/><br/>When I called them back about the one shrimp, I had trouble understanding the accent of the man I spoke to. The last thing he said was "There was one piece in there." And then he hung up. I figured it was weird, slightly rude but a fluke and let it go. I've gotten more than one shrimp in this dish in the past.<br/><br/>But I just ordered the dish again and this time the woman who answered was also hard to understand, I was sure to say, "the last time there was only one shrimp. Could you make sure there's more than one shrimp?" The only thing I understood was "yeah."<br/><br/>When I got my food, there was again only one shrimp. I called back, the woman just kept saying "yeah one shrimp." When I asked why, she said she would have her daughter call me back. The daughter called back and was immediately on the defensive. <br/>"We give one shrimp because shrimp is expensive, so we give plenty of other meat, where else can you get a combo with shrimp for our price? If you have a problem with there being only one shrimp go someplace else." <br/><br/>Considering how defensively she spoke, I doubt I'm the first customer to question this. So if they really cared for their customers' to come back, maybe they could say, up front, that the combo includes one single shrimp. And write that on the menu. Because honestly, a single shrimp is a joke, call a spade a spade.

I have been ordering from them for years. Past few orders, I paid for chow mein noodles and they charged me and didn't include them. So I finally called, the owner said next time I call just tell them on the phone. Well, I just tried and the kid gave me such a hard time I said, I can't believe your questioning me, it's like $1.00 and he KNEW me from delivering. I said that's it I'll never order from there again and he responded, WHATEVER! Never again. I ordered a lot and tipped the drivers very well. They can thank him.

Ordered for delivery yesterday, menu online is outdated but they went through the menu with me on the phone which was awesome. Tried the spicy noodles with chicken, egg rolls, spring rolls, shrimp fried rice, and general tsos chicken, all were delicious! They said delivery would take an hour but they delivered in 30minutes!
Thanks For This
Triple delight. TRIPLE DELIGHT:This is a really great dish that consists of oyster and soy sauce that simmers with the chicken, shrimp, beef tenderloin and some delicious vegetables.<br/>TRIPLE DELIGHT: great food, great service, and great prices.<br/>Love this place.

Great Chinese - Vietnamese in the heart of Dormont. Totally family run and done well. Selections galore although my fav would be the Orange Chicken and Ying Chow with Mekong Noodles. Good food and a good value. You have ample take home every time. Highly recommend.

I love this place. A friendly family restaurant and excellent food. They are happy to make special variations for anyone. Try the all white meat general tsos minus breading. Also, the house special wonton soup is excellent. I've never had a meal here that wasn't delicious.

Great family-owned restaurant. I've been ordering from MeKong for years. The service and the food are both great, and they go out of their way to prepare dishes just as you like them. Very kind and friendly...I highly recommend them.

Good food from nice people.. Mekong is a small 9 table family owned eatery located in Dormont. While skimming local offerings here on Urban Spoon, I noticed that they offered Pho as an eat in item and knew I had to try their version of this Vietnamese staple. I'm glad I did, because it was different from other versions I've tried (I think I've hit every one in Pittsburgh). The broth is much darker, packing more of a punch. Flavorful and spicier than the others with a somewhat peppery taste. I wished I could accurately describe the bouquet of flavors, but I can't so you'll have to try it and enter your thoughts here. During my visit I was pleased to notice that the family knew a majority of the customers that came and went. A good sign if you ask me. I have a strange hunch that you can be included in this circle if you show up there a couple of times. What more could you want beyond a smiling, welcoming face serving you good food prepared from the heart.

Yuck.. Greasy tasteless food. Seriously how can someone make a orange sauce that tastes like flavorless oil??

General tso= deep fried chicken tenders with odd sauce dumped on top. Small portion. Mall food court Chinese would have been better

Had good food here a couple years ago so decided to go back. The kids watching Dora the explorer in the dining room was cute but I could see how it could be inappropriate for some diners. The problem was the place was freezing. I could literally see my breath. I've never been in there when there was even one other patron but to turn the heat down that low is ridiculous. Hot tea was barely Luke warm. Service was fast and attentive however the entree was the absolute worst general tso chicken I have ever had. I will never be back.

This place is great! Love the food and people. They will customize orders which is great for little ones.

Fast service, the menu isn't immense like most Chinese restaurants. Simple focused foods; they eat everything they serve. I'll be here again!

Great!. Wonderful food, great staff. the Pho is superb and the ying chow Mekong noodles are just as good! great food and great value.

Get their vietnamese food. I love their pho. i have had it a few different places in the burgh and nowhere else compares in my opinion. one reason i love it so much is i think they use cilantro instead of more commonly used basil. the broth is heavenly and you get a generous portion of beef and noodles. the mekong noodles are also to notch. i would recommend, however, avoiding their chinese food. my wife has gotten a few different things off the chinese portion of the menu and only the fried rice was good. i always get the pho. the only unfortunate thing about this restaurant is they will not deliver the pho, it is eat in only.

Very good restaurant. I am a regular customer of Mekong and like simple dishes, such as almond chicken. The chef is very good, especially with this type of food. Delivery is prompt and always correct, even if you make special requests. Not a fancy place, so don't expect that if you're dining out, but the food is superb.

Best Asian/Chinese/Vietnamese food in South Hills. The woman who is the owner and chef trained with Chinese chefs and already knew her Vietnamese cuisine before she immigrated from Vietnam in the 70's (so I was told anyway).<br/>Very very good Vietnamese dishes like Pho and Mekong noodles ... <br/>The standard Chinese dishes are top-notch as well .<br/>Matching or surpassing the quality of more hyped places like Sesame Inn, etc .(at less cost).<br/>A fun nicely decorated atmosphere that's right on Dormont's main drag, Potomac Avenue .<br/>(edit 12-11) The prices have gone up $1-2.50 for everything on the menu I noticed on a recent trip here.(i'd rather go to the Pho places in the strip district and get that more common style of pho for less money.)<br/>Highly highly recommended for Asian food-philes and lovers of the more unique South-East Asian dishes ...

I love ordering from Me Kong in Dormont. There are a lot of chinese food places in pittsburgh, but this one beats them all. The food tastes the best, everyone is very friendly, the restaurant itself is pretty small, but it's just perfect. Me Kong is also one of the only places in the south part of pittsburgh that can get a carry-out order right.

I ordered here and got pork fried rice and general tso's chicken. The chicken wasn't even coated in the sauce and looked like regular fried tenders that you would get at the store. The sauce had very little flavor and didn't taste anything like I've had at many other restaurants. The fried rice tasted extremely greasy and looked like it had been sitting for a while. I would recommend you try another restaurant for Chinese in dormont

We stopped into Mekong Asian Restaurant on Potomac Avenue after a movie premier for some late night chow. Asian food is delicious and always appropriate when you have the late-night munchies. Mekong is small, and probably seats 30-40 people. The décor was minimal, with traditional Asian decorations scattered about. The restaurant was clean, and our server was extremely friendly. Our waitress informed us that she the owner’s daughter, and that her mother was doing all of the cooking. We started with a spot of hot tea and steamed dumplings (10 for $5.95). Delicate hints of ginger, garlic and pork permeated the pillowy-soft, steamed dough. The dumplings were fun to eat with our chopsticks, and were served with a warm, soy-based dipping sauce. Steamed Dumplings with Dipping Sauce We ordered two chicken dishes- General Tso’s ($8.95), and Cashew Chicken ($8.95). Both dishes were served with a side of white rice. Our entrees arrived piping hot. We immediately noticed that there was ha
