Review Onion Madien - Pittsburgh

Danielle Caron
I wanted to go somewhere with good vegan food and sit down one night, so I thought I would try this place. I guess I didn't expect it to be so busy! It's also pretty small. Anyway, I just decided to order some takeout food and hangout on a waiting bench. The food took awhile, but I was alright with waiting. I ordered the Balls to Wall (tofu croquettes), the Raw Cheesecake otd (blueberry... thyme, I think?), and a wedding cookie from the display case. The tofu croquettes were amazing themselves. Crispy on the outside and smooth-thick on the inside. I wasn't the biggest fan of the forbidden rice (I ended up just eating the croquettes as they were, because yum, and a pile of rice was left staring at me), but I appreciated it as an occasional accoutrement to the croquettes. The cheesecake... was the most beautiful little cheesecake I had ever seen in my life. And it was delicious. The "crust" was actually pretty crunchy, contrary to a lot of other raw cheesecakes, so I was impressed. The wedding cookie was equally delightful in taste; nothing could match the cheesecake's presentation, though. All-in-all, I guess I had a lot to say. Maybe getting the food wasn't as smooth as I'd planned, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Thankful to have found this place. I very much appreciate that the entire menu is vegan. Even as a picky eater, I was able to find something I liked! The ube cheesecake was incredible, as was our server. Food was delivered very quickly once our order was placed. Will be back for sure! Dining area is rather small and there aren't many seats, so it can feel a bit cramped but no complaints what so ever.

The Onion Maiden was fantastic vegan! They sat me down instantly, provided great service and were helpful with recommendations. I had a few bites of a few items on the menu bc I wanted to try it all! The hot dog was by far the best! It was just a touch spicy & sweet. The restaurants decor is so fun. Absolutely would go back.

Sweet. Onion Maiden hits the sweet spot between serious and silly. The names of the dishes are silly dad jokes but the food is seriously delicious and precise. Our party included vegans, lactose intolerant and celiacs. But the incredible staff at Onion Maiden handled it all very well. Plus, everything tasted great! I think my favorite thing was the service as our waitress was possibly the best waitress I have ever encountered!

One of the best vegan restaurants in Pittsburgh! A cool spin on Asian dishes and they all taste incredible! Highly recommend!

Super cool vibe here! Amazing food. Hot dogs - so good. Donuts - wish I could have one everyday! Nachos - yes get in my belly please. Their stir fry though was disgusting(in my opinion). #eatingwithshelbie

We are visit Pittsburgh for work. One of our team is vegan so we trekked to Allentown from downtown tonight. The atmosphere was great, the menu was fun, the service was fantastic, and the food was delicious. We had the poutine, a veggie dog, the dumplings, various tots, and even the cheesecake. So good! Thank you! A highlight of my trip.

This. Place. Is. BOMB!!! We do love vegan food, but don't exclusively follow a vegan diet or anything, and MAN this place is STILL such a treat!! The presentation, quality and value is amazing. All the food shown in my photo post was only $37. We got tots, steamed buns, a scallion pancake jackfruit taco and two loaded veggie dawgs. What creativity they've achieved here with such amazing flavor combos. Even the side dish of kale was superb!!! Onion Maiden is awesome.

OMG I just lurrrrrved the concept! This is a super cool vegan/vegetaran restaurant. Their maiden/rock theme extends beyond their name to the interiors and even the names of the dishes. They had my heart with names of dishes like "For whom the egg rolls", "Fistful of curry" and "Terrormisu". LOL! We went for the Sunday brunch which has it's own separate menu so I couldn't try these mindblowing-sounding dishes, but whatever we ate was pretty amazing. We ordered the Bahn-mi sandwich and eggless omlette and loved them. The freshness and high quality of the ingredients is certainly apparent. Definitely highly recommended.. I know I'm going back to try all those dishes.. and oh the Dawgs! They have vegan dawgs! YASSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Edit: I did go back on a weeknight and those dawgs! Best veggie dogs I’ve ever eaten. Nuffsaid!

I’m not even vegan and I enjoyed my meal throughly, if that’s not a resounding endorsement then I don’t know what is!! Heads up it’s cash only. I enjoyed the beet tacos 🌮the most, hands down - they also had a nice spicy kick. Cute bits of merch for sale in case you want to take some of the theme home with you 👕

The atmosphere of this place is amazing and the food was wonderful! FYI, you don’t have to worry about making a reservation unless you’re a party of 6 or more; they don’t take them for fewer than that. The place is small and does have limited seating, but even so, my husband and I only waited a half-hour to get a table for dinner. I got the Headbangers Balls and I’m already craving it again. My husband and I both got the Terrormisu for dessert (to go). SO GOOD!! I can’t wait to go back!

The menu at Onion Maiden makes it worth a two, three, or four hour drive just to enjoy its one of a kind, punk inspired creations. The cheese is the most realistic, creamy vegan cheese I’ve ever had! The atmosphere is exciting yet professional, and don’t get me started on the dessert. We ordered an entire tiramisu cake for a birthday- best cake we’ve had (vegan or not)

We absolutely loved this place. Our quick search for vegan food in the area led us to this absolute treasure. The Nachos are divine and were the biggest hit of the table. Also, the cheesecake was the next top choice -as our dairy allergic family member had been craving cheesecake for so long! She loved it, and said it tasted exactly like cheesecake and was something she'll crave until she can come back into town and have it again. We also got some awesome dumplings and a hotdog, both of which were excellent and well priced. Our other main dish, the dark bowl pictured, was an excellent variety and a tasty dish. The atmosphere of Onion Maiden was lovely. It felt upscale yet cosy, with clean lines and great textures. The music was on point with the theme and we spent most of our premeal conversation laughing at the puns on rhe menu and enjoying the space (while discussing if the cheesecake would really taste like cheesecake). The waitstaff was super friendly and I loved the local postings on the bulletin board up front. I can honestly say i can't wait to go again and I'm shocked thst I am saying that about a Vegan place. Yes, we are careful about lactose, but we also geberally love the flavors of eggs and meat. This place opened us up to loving Vegan food and not throwing it in your face (well, it was all very metal but not so intense). Thanks again Onion Maiden

If you love metal, and vegan food this is the place for you. Everything is so good. We tried Balls to the Wall, General Ngo’s, Emperor Palpatots, Hang Ten, Cookie Monster, Metalachi Cookie, Rainbow in the Dark brownie, green manalishi cupcake, and Red Wedding Iced Tea. Everything was delicious! I liked the General Ngo’s over the Emperor Palpatots. You’d think that the cabbage and bean sprouts would make the tots soggy, but nope! Still crunchy. The dawg was sooooo good. I could have eaten like 20 of them. The balls to the wall were tofu croquettes are definitely the best way I’ve had tofu. Get these for your friend who hates tofu. Game changer. The wedding cookie was very flavorful, but a bit crumbly. The chocolate chip cookie, and brownie were good too. The real winner tho was the green manalishi cupcake. Matcha almond cake filled with strawberry cashew cream. Finished it all with the red wedding tea, don’t skip it. No dine in, but we took it to go and ate over at the Grandview Overlook.

One of my favorite places. The service is insanely friendly and the flavors are mind blowing. To top it all off, everything is 100% vegan. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, even if it is small. My favorite is the nachos; the cheese sauce is delicious. Definitely coming back again soon!

Me & my sister came on a pretty lazy Saturday afternoon a little before onion maidens 2hr close until dinner. The waitress was nice & gave normal attention to us. The food was GREAT I just wish my food pipping hot, (not their fault we came like 14 mins before turn over) my sister's was so i was a bit dissapointed but I still ate all of it haha. We just hope this restaurant lasts a long time, if your from the neighborhood or surrounding areas we all know too many great restaurants failed here. I wish I could give a 4.5 their lychee lemonade is to die for, so are the matcha green tea cookies!

Love love love this place. The service is fast and friendly, the food is consistently fantastic, and the menu is so creative–its impressive. My only qualms are that they only take cash and they're so far away from me! This place is incredible.

One of my favorite restaurants and my favorite vegan restaurant. The vibe is always comfortable, the service is great, and the food is FANTASTIC. Omnivores really love the food too, and I recommend trying a bite out of everyone's meal just to get a taste of what all they have to offer. I really love the puns all across the menu. "Aqua Poutine Hunger Force" is one of my favorite things to order! I'd eat here every chance that I get and highly recommend it.

Absolutely amazing - catered Eddies for my wedding rehearsal dinner (in Cleveland) and boy were they a HIT! Everybody raved about the Eddies all night and how mouth-watering delicious they were. It is safe to say that Cleveland is now a believer in Eddies! I definitely recommend them for any event or even just for brunch or a sweet pick me up - from their unique and amazing menu, to their donuts and sweets, they are for sure a must visit! xoxox

Excellent place to eat. Super polite staff and amazing vegan food. We will be returning to try out the non brunch items.

I'm a junk-food vegan and this place satisfied my cravings for warm, gooey, cheesy comfort food. Plus the staff was super nice, and everything was very reasonably priced! 10/10 would reccomend!

Great tunes, great art, and most of all great food! We traveled from Detroit, ordered half the menu, and was not disappointed one bit.

Creative, flavorful options - all done with a flair for metal/musical punnery. I'm generally a hopeless "meatatarian" and despite that was: 1) not short on options that intrigued me 2) very satisfied with the food I tried and 3) very full and happy. Plus the food wasn't expensive at all!

Awesome!!!!!!!! The best atmosphere and food! Friendly staff, good music and great food. What more can you ask for? :)

I'm a total meat eater, and I absolutely loved my meal. Burn the Witch soup, shared Poutine - that cashew cheese -, and the Trooper Dawg. No time for dessert, sadly. It was prime time, we had to wait 20 minutes or so, but we opened our wine and just hung out. My friend and I were seated at a 4 person table, so we offered up the other half to the next party of 2 and met a couple of really cool gals. The service is great, very laid back and attentive.

It took me some time to write this review ( been a busy month ). My group was in Pittsburgh for an event in the city and some of us being Vegan usually have a tough time finding great eats when we all go out. Saw this place on Happy Cow and loved the name, the vibe, the menu so we decided to give it a shot. We were blown away. The food is incredible, the staff is amazing, and the atmosphere is stellar. We ended up there both nights and it almost made me contemplate missing my flight just so I could enjoy it one more day! We will be back 100% ( might be a flight to Pittburgh just to have dinner :) )
