EXCELLENT!! Truly a hidden gem on the North Side. Hit this place up and we were happy we did. Service was quick and friendly (even though we weren’t in a hurry), good prices, great food. I got the gyro sub and my friend got the club sub - we shared a side of fries. No complaints from either one of us. We learned the current owner is the third person to own the restaurant. Definitely hit this place up.
Very good food, although the parking can be tough. It's certainly possible there is parking available nearby that I am not aware of. They have a full bar here, and decently priced drinks.
I had a Greek steak hoagie. Which was very good. Also tasted the vegetarian Greek wrap, surprisingly good as well. Only disappointment is all sides must be purchased separately. We will definitely be back.
Great little place to sit down and chat. The atmosphere was quiet at the time we went (3pm on a Saturday), but there were plenty of people. The service was friendly and quick. The food was great. Highly recommend "The Spartan" if you're hungry. The gyro meat was on point and delicious. The onion rings were not greasy and battered. Our kid loved the fries and chicken tenders.
The Modern Cafe may not be much to look at on the outside, but the bar/lounge area inside is very nice and the staff is friendly and personable. I had The Spartan, a sandwich that apparently won a contest some years back. It was delicious, and as the bartender said, it was a massive sandwich! I believe his exact words were "the only thing you need after that sandwich is a nap!" He was right...

A polite endearing atmosphere. Bar Tender/Counter server Dale was supreme. Shaking hands and meeting new patrons/me. He was superb poring drinks and conversing. Every staff member that entered the bar area was courteous and provided a friendly greeting. Though the dinning area had plenty of seating opportunities, I'm thankful we sat at the bar. Service was quick/fast.
Portions were plentiful, cooking seasoning was not. My burger was oversized and required both hands. An overflow of lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Fries hot and abundant. I would have preferred fresh cut--and seasonings.
Dales was upset but helpful that the kitchen errored on both meals--my friend's fries were not cheese, and bacon was omitted from my bacon burger. Nor was my burger medium-well--overcooked. However, everything was good, not delicious. Dale corrected the receipt to avoid overpayment.
I will return and sit with Dale again. I will request spices and encourage verbal communication with the cooks to eliminate errors.

The Spartan is out of this world! Tons of flavor, great value for the price. I can't say enough good things about Modern Cafe, they have a great selection of spirits and craft beer. Top notch customer service, this place is truly a hidden gem here in the Northside!
Hands down one of the best places to eat. To begin with, the guy who helped us couldn't have been more polite and professional. Plus he was just cool to talk to. Ice cold beer and a full bar. The food was fantastic. Really fresh ingredients and produce. Cooked perfectly. One of the best surprises was the fries. Crinkle fries cooked to perfection. Crisp outside, tender inside. I really had no complaints at all. It was great.
This place is awesome. Probably the most underrated place I have been in pittsburgh. I will be back ❤️.
So been meaning to get to Modern Cafe for awhile and finally got the opportunity. Lots of seating inside but chose to sit at the bar.
Ordered the Velvet Fog and Gyro Melt. The addition of banana peppers was a pleasant surprise to the sandwich.
Classic American Bar and Grille. Happy Hour has half-off drafts and they have an extensive beer collection in cans and bottles. Very clean interior and has some outside seating. Only gets a 4/5 as the messed up my order. But, the burger I did get was very, very good. Fries were just ok—you can tell they were frozen. Service was great and they comp'd me the burger I did order to go, even though that I insisted it was unnecessary. I definitely recommend. I think the cook just made a mental error, and hey—shit happens. Going to give this place a second chance and maybe try one of their sandwiches.
