I almost don't want to leave a review because this place is so good! Better Maid had to be the secret spot for doughnuts in the city. Managing to catch them when they are open is like the bouncer pulling back the velvet rope and welcoming you into an exclusive club. No one, not even Oakmont can compare to the texture and lightness. Since this is an exclusive sort of experience be ready to have to get up very early and often find they are closed on days they have been open the prior week. It's all depended upon the health of the owner so when you do manage to get them it's that much sweeter. There's a third party twitter that posts the open status, but it's not perfect.

This review is for the out of towners like me who read about this place and wanted to know if they should wake up at the crack of dawn and stand in line for 20-30 minutes for some donuts. Yeah. You should. This is an unassuming place with just one guy in there super wholesome and serving up donuts. Cash only to save you the panic in line like I had because I didn’t read that anywhere. You’ll also get nervous because people will come out with stacks of boxes and you heard it sells out. Definitely get a few glazed donuts and try some cake ones. The glazed donuts were so amazing I almost went to stay in line the next day but I was too sleepy. Definitely go check them out, the donuts are yummy and it’s worth standing in line for at least once in your life.

The twitter @bettermaiddonut is the true MVP of this review. Tells you whether the shop is open so you never have to drive across town to be disappointed. Better maid is some of the best donuts in Pittsburgh. Not necessarily the best I have ever had but a strong contender in the area. The only downside is how hard it is to get these donuts. I went once on a Sunday morning and they were not open. This time I checked the Twitter and got there at 7:50ish when they were supposed to open at 7:30 and they did not open until 8:20. Sadly I was still too late to get an old fashioned so I will definitely be coming back. Donuts were fresh and very classic. The buttercream filling was my least favorite and the cinnamon sugar cake and plain glazed yeast were my favorites, will definitely be going back for an old fashioned bc it seems like this place could do it right.

In my father-in-law’s words… “A culinary treasure!” They really are amazing donuts. The cake donuts are crispy on the outside and moist inside. The buttercream are so fluffy, but melt in your mouth. This is not a chain store. Owner makes the donuts himself, so if he’s not feeling well, they are not open. Absolutely worth stopping if you see his SUV parked out front! Update: Ken had serious health issues and was not able to work for the last few weeks, but the shop was open again today. He’s taking it easy and didn’t make as much. I was there at 7:30 and he was already low by the time I got to the counter. The line was still out the door, so I’m guessing he sold out by around 8.

Third time is a charm! That's how many times I've tried to get my hands on some of these donuts but they were always sold out. Got there at 8am this time and walked away with a dozen of the most perfectly made donuts around. Dough was light fluffy, and crisp depending on the kind you get. Not overly sweet just right. Great selection of types and flavors. Excellent across the board.

This place was so so so good! I’m glad I finally was on that side of town to give them a try. It’s a small shop. The 2 people inside were extremely personable. Such good conversation. I see a lot of reviews where people are complaining about their times that they’re open or not. It’s a very small place, family owned, 2 people. Big business are altering their hours because they have no staff. So think about how hard it must be for a small business. I’m sure they’re trying their best! And the donuts did not disappoint. I suggest if you’re riding by and you see the open sign lit up, give them a try! 4.50 for a half dozen. Some places want 10 bucks! Will definitely recommend! Keep doing what you do. Love small businesses!

Worth the wait in the cold for him to open the shop (they sell out fast). Definitely a hidden gem in the city, no suburbanites here. Best in the (hidden) burgh.

So good! I'm from out of town and someone mentioned I stop by before leaving. I'm definitely glad I made the trip! Like others have said, there's usually a line before opening. I got there early and stood out in the cold, but definitely worth it. It was all great but I loved the donut holes, blueberry donut, and apple fritter donut. Also, the employees are super sweet. Get there early or miss out!...And it's CASH ONLY.

Slather me in frosting and call me a donut! Dang, this place is amazing! The donuts are very high quality, inexpensive, and the assortment is high. The two folks working (owners?) were super nice, quick at getting folks through, and love where they work. You definitely need to arrive early. We showed up at 7:35am on a Saturday and there was a line down the road. Worth the wait!
